HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

Whew! May was jam-packed with a bunch of exciting events that I hope all of you had lots of fun

attending and participating in. Despite the heat, the turnouts for the AIDS Walk and Memorial Day

Parade were amazing. It was great to see so many Key Clubbers come out and represent Brooklyn

Tech Key Club. We have a couple more events coming up in June, including Walk Now for Autism

Speaks, Relay for Life, and last but not least, our annual induction ceremony! I hope you bought a

ticket already because it is going to be a wonderful evening filled with food, friends, laughter, en-

tertainment, and music. I personally cannot wait until the new committee heads get announced!

You can flip to the back of this issue to see highlights from last year’s Induction.

Although we’re nearing the end of our 2011-2012 service year, it does not mean you should stop

contributing to The Beaver Tree! Please continue to submit articles and pictures. I cannot make

newsletters possible without your help and support! As a reminder, you receive +5 points per article,

15 acceptable pictures, and completed puzzles. You can E-mail me at [email protected].

Thank you for reading!

Yours in the spirit of service,

08 CARING—OUR WAY OF LIFE

This was the first AIDS Walk I've ever attended! I actually had a pretty hectic morning: I took five trains

to get to the designated volunteer location for Checkpoint 1 since MTA service was very slow. I was

late and was unable to help with setup. However, once the walk started, it was pretty busy for us.

While it seemed like there were lots of snacks/drinks at first, we ran out of basically everything after

more walkers started to pass by within the first hour. Despite all the problems we had with the snacks/

drinks, our checkpoint was very successful. Our heads said that this was the most successful Check-

point 1 has ever been in AIDS Walk history! I will definitely return to the AIDS Walk next year.

— Sandy Mui

Presented by Duane Reade and sponsored by many other

corporations, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) hosted the 27th

annual AIDS Walk New York, drawing a crowd of more than 30,000

New Yorkers at Central Park. To date, $122 million has been raised to

provide prevention and care services to the thousands living with or

affected by HIV/AIDS while funding research for cures and public

health solutions. Check out gmhc.org and aidswalk.net to learn more

about HIV/AIDS and what you can do to help.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Brooklyn Tech Key Club collaborated with BETA and NHS to make the Special Olym-

pics at Abraham Lincoln High School possible. The special Olympics are held for

children with intellectual disabilities. Members came out to cheer on participants as

they ran track, competed in obstacle courses, and more. At events like these, it’s

not about winning. It’s about helping others grow and show the kids how to have

fun. Visit nyso.org to learn more about the Special Olympics in New York.

District Secretary Amber with our secretary Tiffany!

At the Special Olympics, Key Club, BETA and NHS mem-

bers came together to plan and volunteer at the event

while cheering on the participants. It was a really hot

and sunny day, but judging by how happy and success-

ful the Special Olympics were, I know that everyone

who attended had lots of fun. The participants were all

smiling, laughing, and having a great time. Going to

events like this reminds me of why I joined Key Club and

BETA in the first place: the feeling of being able to make

a difference in someone else’s life is amazing. I hope

that our club will participate in another event like this

next year.

“I think the best part about planning the Special Olympics,

aside from being able to see the participants with big smiles on

their faces, was using a megaphone.”

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

12 CARING—OUR WAY OF LIFE

I had lots of fun at the Memorial Day Parade even though it was very hot. My favorite part of the

parade was being able to meet the lieutenant governor and the new Key Club president. I was

amazed at to how kind and caring they were. I expected the walk to be longer and loop around

the park, but the distance was just perfect. I would definitely do this event again but will wear

more appropriate clothes next time. (No more wearing all black in the sun!)

— Nabib Ahmed

Going into its 145th year, the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade is the oldest continuously

running Memorial Day parade in the nation. Participants include veterans from the Ko-

rean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars, as well as members of the local Girl Scouts and Kiwanis

Club. Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers helped represent the Mapleton Kiwanis at the parade.

KEY CLUBBERS OF THE MONTH

18 CARING—OUR WAY OF LIFE

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?”

Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most

impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber

must not only attend every event that month but must also actively partici-

pate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want to a Key

Clubber who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to

others. For the months of April and May, this honor goes to …..

DISTRICT & INTERNATIONAL NEWS

DISTRICT NEWS

Each year, the district governor decides on a project that focuses on a specific category or

area of service outreach. The Governor’s Project for the 2012-2013 service year, chosen by

Governor Daniel Ivan Lin, is called “Keys to Accessibility,” which aims to serve the elderly

and those with disabilities. Ideas for this project include organizing a dance for a local senior

center, visiting and providing assistance for home for people with disabilities, having club

visits at a local elderly home and providing services such as reading newspapers, storytelling

for the visually impaired, holding a sports competition, and so much more.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Key Club International Convention (ICON) is almost

here! This year it’s taking place in Orlando, Florida at the

Walt Disney World Hilton Resort from July 1 to July 8. Key

Clubbers from around the world will gather to attend

workshops, vote for the new international board, visit

the Disney parks and enjoy a special behind the scenes

tour, and so much more. It’s something you definitely

don’t want to miss!
