As I lay in bed tonight, staring at my little boy, I thought to myself how wonderful it was to be a mommy. To be blessed everyday with this precious little boy that has filled my heart with so much joy and happiness. This will be the first Mother’s Day that I get to celebrate the miracle that was given to me. However, I won’t be able to fully enjoy my blessing on that day, as it will be 1 year that my sister was taken away from us. The day will be bitter sweet as I think to myself how wonderful my sister would be feeling on that day as she watched her two babies, Dominic and Emma, grow, just as I get to watch my baby boy. She would be so proud to see how wonderful they are growing up to be. But she can’t celebrate this Mother’s day with her babies as I do. They will not get to tell her how much they love her and miss her. I will not be able to tell her how proud I am of her, as a mother, a sister, a friend. Last year, I remember telling myself, its ok, you aren’t going to be able to talk to her today to wish her a happy Mother’s Day. She is sick and can’t talk, but its ok. She is strong. She is a fighter. She will pull through this as she always does. I will get to tell her I love her tomorrow. But now on this Mother’s Day, she is gone. I cannot tell her Happy Mother’s Day or watch her give her babies a kiss like I now get to do. She was taken from us. This horrible disease has taken her from all of us. My sister, vivacious, fun spirited, full of life and hope that one day CF would not stand for Cystic Fibrosis but for Cure Found. Her hope was that one day, with her and everyone else’s efforts, that CF would not be a life taking disease anymore. That it would not send horror to the parents that hear that their baby has CF, that it would not mean the experience my sister had, and the pain that she and our family has had. Even though, there is no cure yet, with help of others we can spread the word and educate people on this horrible genetic disease that took my sister from us. CF affects one in every 3,200 people each year, yet it is a disease that many have not heard of.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that is caused when a person inherits a defective gene by both of their parents. 1 in 29 Caucasian Americans carry this gene, but are unaware and have no symptoms. When these genes are inherited it causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus like fluid. This fluid builds up in their lungs and in the pancreas, which results in life-threatening lung infections and digestive problems. Although there have been great gains with Cystic Fibrosis research, the life expec-tancy is still on 35 years of age. My sister would have been 32 this year. Although she will not be able to live out her dream of seeing a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, I hope that with others efforts and dona-tions, that her dream will come true one day. Horizon Early Learning Preschool (HELP) is a non-denominational Christian-based, academically-focused school. It harbors approximately 14 teachers and 68 students from six weeks old through Kindergarten. HELP is conveniently located in a quiet residential area of Valrico. The mission of HELP is to provide a quality education that fosters a biblically based and developmentally appropriate early childhood education through enrichment that stimu-lates curiosity and learning, while nurturing the child’s emotional, social and spiritual growth. Horizon Early Learning Preschool is an approved VPK provider. The VPK students enjoy learning through exciting weekly themes. Core curriculum is integrated through centre based activities as well as guided learning. The class mascot “Max” the Jack Russell invites children under “The Teaching Tree” to introduce daily literacy and math concepts. The Kindergarten program offers a low student to teacher ratio allowing individualized learning plans. Using the Christian-based BJU Press curriculum allows the students to explore the world of literacy and math. Science is taught by allowing the children to engage in hands-on experiments that incorporate other subject areas. Students learn about the world through theme based Social Study units. Horizon Early Learning Preschool’s summer program commences on June 11, 2012. The theme this year is a “World of Wonder”. This will include nine weeks of fun, academically focused activities. The themes will change weekly and offer the children a variety of exciting opportunities to explore their world in a hands-on approach to learning. In addition to the weekly activities, students will be participating in gymnastics, water days and field trips. The summer camp children will also be attending Horizon Christian Church’s annual Vacation Bible School. Horizon Early Learning Preschool is a ministry of Horizon Christian Church. The church has called Brandon / Valrico its home since 1962. In addition to the preschool, Horizon Christian Church offers many other opportunities for children and youth to grow and prosper in the word of God. For children ages three through fifth grade, there are many programs available to include Vacation Bible School in July, Great Adventures with Mr. Tony and Superheroes of the Bible. Also, students sixth grade thru twelfth grade can “hang out” with youth minister Justin Storey on Wednesday evenings, and High School students can join their friends on Sunday evenings for a time worship. It is our goal to provide each child with an exceptional educa-tion, balancing both “work” and “play” that would nurture their natural love for learning.
