It was the consensus of the general public, friends, vendors and

members that our first quilt show was a huge success! There were

comments like "I can't believe this is your first quilt show!" and

"I've been to 'major' shows that have not been as good as yours"

and "the talent in this guild is remarkable!" So I say a huge "thank

you" to everyone involved in making this quilt show the huge suc-

cess that it was! I want to especially thank my co-chairs, Ann

Parent and Carol Ramsey, for all the hard work and dedication

they provided. They were there for me whenever I needed them,

they picked up the slack when I couldn't cover all the bases. We

worked together well and supported the thoughts and ideas of

all. I wish I could name names of all the special people, but you

know who you are and I thank you too!

WOW! We did it!WOW! We did it!WOW! We did it!WOW! We did it!

It is 6:49 p.m. and I just got home from our first quilt show. I sit here in

total amazement at what we, as a guild, have just accomplished. We put on a

quilt show to rival any quilt show! Everyone worked so hard and was ever dili-

gent to do their respective jobs. If this had not happened this show would not have

been the success it truly was. As President I owe every member a huge “THANK

YOU” for being so dedicated, working so hard, making and showing your quilts

and making everyone that came through the door feel appreciated and welcome.

This show really is a true example of one of my favorite saying, “A burden heavy

to one is borne lightly by many.” Each and every one of you should be so proud to

say that you are a member of the Rutherford Quilt Guild, Inc., I know that I am!

Moving forward, please come to the May 9th meeting to simply enjoy fel-

lowhsip, have fun at the trunk show and learn something from our speaker, Susan

Edmonson. I will not be with you at this meeting as I will be in Illinois celebrat-

ing our grandson’s first birthday! So there will be limited business, just fellowship,

shopping and learning.

A big surprise is in store for the June 13th meeting!!! So, come with a

happy heart and an empty stomach. If your husband helped us with the show,

please bring him as well. Much is in store for this meeting, so you don’t want to

miss it….I keep secrets well, so you will have to wait until June to see what is in

store!! See you soon!!!

RECIPE CORNER

• 2 (16-oz.) containers fresh strawberries,

quartered

• 3/4 cup sugar, divided

• 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

• 1 cup whipping cream

• 2 tablespoons sugar

• 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 4 teaspoons baking powder

• 3/4 cup cold butter, cut up

• 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

• 1 (8-oz.) container sour cream

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Garnish with fresh mint sprigs

Ingredients

Preparation

1. Combine strawberries, 1/2 cup sugar, and, if desired, almond extract. Cover berry mixture, and let stand 2 hours.

2. Beat whipping cream at medium speed with an electric mixer until foamy; gradually add 2 Tbsp. sugar, beating until soft peaks form. Cover and chill up to 2 hours.

3. Combine flour, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and baking powder in a large bowl; cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender or two forks until crumbly.

4. Whisk together eggs, sour cream, and vanilla until blended; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Drop dough by lightly greased 1/3 cupfuls onto a lightly greased baking sheet. (Coat cup with vegetable cooking spray after each drop.)

5. Bake at 450° for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden.

6. Split shortcakes in half horizontally. Spoon about 1/2 cup berry mixture onto each shortcake bottom; top each with a rounded Tbsp. chilled whipped cream, and cover with tops. Serve with remaining whipped cream. Garnish, if desired.

Strawberry Jam Shortcakes: Prepare recipe as directed. Before topping shortcake bottoms with strawberry mixture, stir together 1/4 cup strawberry jam and 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh mint. Spread cut sides of bottom shortcake halves evenly with jam mixture. Proceed with recipe as directed.

Make either a table runner or a quilt using one of two designs based on the traditional log cabin pat-

tern. You will learn a technique that can be used with any traditional block. If you like scrappy quilts,

this would be a great design to use.

From Peggy’s website – Using "traditional blocks" as the design source and a technique Peggy devel-

oped, you'll be creating quilts that are uniquely your own, through cut, color, and design, but always

in what is as familiar as your own backyard.

September – Rose Hughes – Rose has been on the TheQuiltShow.com and published in 500 Art

Quilts, Quilters Newsletter Magazine, and Quilting arts. She is the author of Exploring Embellish-

ments: More Artful Quilts with Fast-Piece Appliqué and Dream Landscapes: Artful Quilts Made with

From Rose’s website - Want to add sparkle, light, shadow and texture to

your art quilts? Have your design concepts pop? Your colors flow like rivers? Come to the Art Quilt

Dimensional Stitching class and learn how to use stitching in new and exciting, non-traditional ways.

No one will ever say they’ve missed the point of your quilt art creation!

In this class, we will take traditional linear, fill and dimensional embroidery stitches and learn how

with to use them in unique and amazing ways to express life’s true textures. Go home with working

samples of the new art quilt dimensional stitching techniques being presented in this workshop.

Friday & Saturday September 9 – 10 - DREAMIN UP LANDSCAPES - members $90 / non-members $110

From Rose’s website - Ever see a beautiful scene that you know would make an amazing quilt? In this

workshop you will learn how to capture and translate your favorite landscape photographs into color-

ful designs and unique fabric art. You’ll create your own dream landscape while learning and using

Fast-Pieced Appliqué™ techniques and embellishments. In just two days you'll learn the secret of how

this technique uses machine piecing and appliqué in combination to simplify complicated curves and

circles. Additionally, explore layering your work with a wide variety of unusual embellishments–– so

you can capture the spirit of your photos in fabric form. You’ll take home a class projects and a unique

piece designed from your original landscape photo, and the skills and techniques to apply in future

projects.

If you prefer not to create your own design, you may purchase one of Rose’s patterns to use for this

class.
