DESIGN TIMES
The American Society of Interior Designers Texas Gulf Coast Chapter held their 2011 Show House design spectacular in Sienna Plantation, Sugar Land, TX. Each design team chose a room to design, and LSC-Kingwood Interior Design Student Chapter was lucky enough to get to participate in designing the laundry room. The project consisted of creating a concept for the space that corresponded to the other Hill Country Rustic themed rooms in the house. Other items we were privileged to get to take part in were specifying the cabinets, appliances and finishes etc. as well as helping out with physical labor in the space. The proceeds for the show house went to the Children’s Memorial Herman’s Hospital. The Show House was also featured on Debra Duncan Show. Lone Star College-Kingwood was the only school that participated in the Show House this year. The project was an exemplary opportunity for the school and individuals to participate in. It was exciting to create a marvelous space for the public and builders. It was a great opportunity to learn as well as meet other designers and industry partners who were involved.
SPRING, 2011 VOL 2# ISSUE #2
The LSC-Student Interior Design Department would like to thank the 2010-2011 Interior Design
Student Board for all their hard work and dedication they have done this year.

This semester’s lighting class had an outstanding design
opportunity to create lighting designs for the Aerodrome Ice
Skating Complex. The class, led by Adjunct Professor Amy
Abbott, was presented the opportunity by the Aerodrome
General Manager, T.C Wells and Constellation Lighting Ltd USA
Managing Director, John Banks. The challenge was to have the
students create various lighting designs for several areas of the
Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex. Designs ideas for the main
skating area were submitted by teams and individual students
submitted designs for the Pro Shop, Party Room, Restaurant,
Front Entry Lobby, and Skate Rental Lobby. All students were privileged to receive an award for a
Certificate of Achievement. The best team design for the main rink was awarded to Herman McElyea,
Kalee Medina, Tansel Coskun and Yolanda Pierre. The best individual design was awarded to Christie
Alford for her Pro-Shop design. The Aerodrome Project was very intense and turned out to be an
incredible accomplishment for the entire class.

Spring 2011 VOL #2 ISSUE #2
LAMPS
This semester the students
enrolled in Lighting were presented the
challenge of creating lamps made of
unique, different and creative materials.
Many of the students used items that
were found around their homes, some
created them out of lavish desired pieces
and other very unusual items. As a
whole all of the lamps were fun, different
and like no other. “The project was an
exciting way to learn to build and create
a lamp.”
Every lamp was unique to the person
creating them; some even had
sentimental connections to their
construction.

KBIS 2011
Each year the National Kitchen and Bath Association hosts the
Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, and this year several of our
students had the pleasure of attending the event. KBIS was held
this year in fabulous Las Vegas, April 26-28, 2011. In
attendance were student chapter members Tara McGuffin,
Megan Rosenquist, Rachel Mancill and Henry Palma. The event
was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and featured
miles of wall to wall booths and displays for vendors in the
Kitchen and Bath industry. The vendors were from the US and
many other countries from around the world. “It was really
exciting to see all the new products up close and personal” –
Megan Rosenquist. “There are so many booths, you just didn’t
know where to start or end” –Henry Palma. Beyond all the
vendor booths, the event features learning and enrichment
seminars that gave great insight on a variety of topics such as
business, marketing and designing for future populations
(universal design and generation “Y”). “The seminar that I
attended, was very insightful on Generation “Y’. It spoke about
the trends that this generation is creating and how designers can
get to understand and know this generation better, to meet their
needs and wants.” – Megan Rosenquist. Overall, the event was
a masterful enticement for all the students that went, and I hope
that many more students will attend next year!

The interior design Student Chapter participated in the
annual Spring Fling/Crawfish Boil on March 29, 2011. The

members and other clubs and organization representatives
while at the event. The event featured a Zydeco band and
music, as well as a feast of boiled crawfish.
PRODUCT RUNWAY This year's IIDA Product Runway was held on May 5, 2011 at the Verizon Theature. All
designs were based on a concept of "Remix" with themes based on music genres. The LSC-
Kingwood Design Team chose a Modern Burlesque Design in the Theme of Jazz/Blues.
With the help of sponsors, the LSC-Kingwood design team used their creativity with
products and constructed a garment out of one hard good and one soft good. "Product Runway has
been a great and rewarding experience. I have enjoyed watching an idea blossom and transform into
reality," said design student Alexis Murphy. She would recommend others to join next year.
