Blueberries

Packed with nutritional power, blueberries contain anthocyanins (the pigments that make them blue), which are potent antioxidants - a half cup of blueberries provides the antioxidant power of five servings of peas, carrots, apples, squash or broccoli. Blueberries are also a good source of fiber - a half-cup serving provides two grams - and are a healthy low-glycemic-index carbohydrate, as well as a good source of vitamin C. What’s more, blueberries may show promise in addressing the effects of aging: animal studies have shown improved motor skills and a reversal of age-related short-term memory loss. In addition, blueberries may have health benefits ranging from preventing cancer and defending against urinary tract infections to protecting the brain from stroke damage and reducing heart disease risks. So add organic blueberries (and other berries) to your diet for a boost! Source: www.drweil.com

Elliot Krane: The mystery of chronic pain We think of pain as a symptom, but there are cases where the nervous system develops feedback loops and pain becomes a terrifying disease in itself. Starting with the story of a girl whose sprained wrist turned into a nightmare, Elliot Krane talks about the complex mystery of chronic pain, and reviews the facts we're just learning about how it works and how to treat it. http://www.ted.com/talks/elliot_krane_the_mystery_of_chronic_pain.html

Acupuncture is an element of traditional Chinese medicine practiced routinely in China, Japan, Korea

and other Eastern countries. The origins of acupuncture in China can be traced back at least two thousand years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing health care systems in the world. Over recent years there has been a growing demand for acupuncture and an acceptance of the technique among medical professionals. The practice of acupuncture is based on therapeutic insertion of fine needles in various combinations and patterns into various points ("acupoints") in the body to stimulate nerve impulses. Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the idea of 'qi' (vital energy) which is said to travel around the body along 'meridians' which the acupuncture points affect. For many people, acupuncture is an effective method of relieving pain. DR XIAO LOFSTEDT (FCMA, CMRB, Chinese Medicine, Dip.Acupuncture) practises Traditional Chinese Medicine, incorporating Acupuncture at the NIIM Clinic. Xiao has worked as a general practitioner in China for 12 years and has also practiced in USA, Denmark and now in Australia. Contact the NIIM Clinic regarding making an appointment with Dr Lofstedt.
