The Alley Pond Striders have always called our five mile annual running and walking event through the park a “challenge.” Last year’s challenge was the unseasonably warm weather. This year the challenge was the rain. While everyone was enjoying the great mild and sunny skies on Saturday, the Striders were worried and preparing for Sunday’s race.

Despite the rains and chilly temperatures, YOU showed up! YOU came out! YOU signed up (some were pre-registered, but some signed up that day), YOU ran, YOU walked, YOU enjoyed the park. In addition to the runners and walkers, there were the volunteers. THEY signed you in, THEY pointed the way, THEY handed out the water, THEY got your time, THEY feed you, THEY handed out raffle prizes and THEY announced the awards.

Although there were challenges, WE had fun. WE enjoyed each other’s company, WE enjoyed the feeling of completing the race course, and WE are proud of OUR accomplishments!

The Alley Pond Striders are thrilled that you joined us and made our race a success. And, finally, we hope you will mark your calendar and join us again in 2011. The early forecast is for great weather <wink>!

A WARM THANK YOU FROM THE KAPLAN FAMILY In spite of unfavorable weather conditions, it was a joyful experience to pull into the parking lot and discover so many “ready for action” ath-letes! The warmth and consideration on our Dad’s behalf and the entire Kaplan Family’s behalf made the day totally sunny. Our Dad would have been overjoyed to see so many friends and acquaintances participating in such a worthwhile event. We hope that each of you walk the trail and enjoy sitting on the bench just relaxing while admir-ing the beauty of the park. We truly appreciated the photos, banners, t-shirts and balloons that added such a nice personal touch, and we would specifi-cally like to acknowledge and thank Lynn Henry, Ken Kaiser and Janice Melnick for making the day a reality.

May 2010 Volume XXI Issue 5A E-Supplement to ‘The Str ider ’

Al ley Pond Striders P.O. Box 298

Well, it was another successful Strider Five-Mile Challenge Race. Despite the bad weather, the sunny Striders kept the mood high. As the editor of “The Strider” and “The Extra Stride”, this edition of the publication is always most difficult. There are many pieces that must come together to create an im-pressive paper.

Just so you know, I am not bragging and I am not taking credit. This edition is the product of the hard work of Lynn Henry, Joe Gambino, George Zink, Debbie Pesa, Helen Pasqual and Elik Hirsch. With the articles, results and pictures this edition of “The Strider” would be little more than a list of folks who ran a race. Because of their contributions and hard work, this paper tells a great story...YOUR story. We all hope you enjoy reliving the day.

Kenneth J. Kaiser

Editor, “The Strider” and ”The Extra Stride”

NOTE: WALK AND RUN TIMES MOVE TO AN 8:30 AM START BEGINNING SATURDAY, MAY 31st.

PEOPLE AND PLACES - Answering that important question of who, what, where are the Striders!

Striders were out at Flushing Meadow-Corona Park on April 3rd to run the Queens 13.1 “Marathon” (actually a half marathon distance. Running were Fran Kraus, past presidents Gerry Ruiz and Rob Pasqual, and Elik Hirsch.
