while sophomore DH Blake Davey batted .318 with 48 hits, 13 doubles and a team-best 31 RBI. Both also earned first-team, All-OEC honors.

Freshman right-hander Stephen Kane, the OEC Pitcher of the Year, went 12-0 with two complete games and a 2.09 ERA, striking out 83 in 99 innings of work. Bryson Kauhaahaa (5-1, 3.74 ERA), Nick Rogowski (6-1, 3.30 ERA) and Ryan Hartman (3-2, 2.58 ERA) have all produced solid numbers in the starting rotation, while relievers Alon Leichman (2-0, 1.42 ERA) and Darren Gidley (1-5, two saves, 3.97 ERA) have been Pickler’s go-to guys out of the bull-pen.

Entering the Southern California playoffs as the ninth seed, Cypress upset No. 8 Cuesta with a two-game sweep (8-3 and 5-0). The Chargers lost to Mt. San Antonio in the opener of the Super Regionals,

4-3, but bounced back with a pair of doubleheader sweeps to reach the Final Four. Cypress beat College of the Canyons 5-4 and Saddleback 6-4 before beating Mt. SAC twice (7-3, 6-0) to earn a hard-fought trip to Fresno.

Sister campus Fullerton College joins Cypress in the Final Four, marking the 13th time since 1988 that two teams from the same conference qualify for the state tournament and the ninth time the two teams have come from the Orange Empire Conference. However, this is the first time two teams from the North Orange County Community College District have reached the Final Four at the same time.

In the opening game of this weekend’s four-team, double-elimination Northern California’s top seed, the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs (33-7), will face the Southern California No. 2 seed Cypress College Chargers (29-14), beginning at 12 p.m.

is available here. Among the best news for the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) is that the proposal delays action plans to move adult education from the K-12 system to community colleges.

The Governor’s revised proposal recognizes that more time is needed to provide a seamless transition to a new model of delivering adult and noncredit education. Under the plan, the status-quo model will be retained for two years.

This is good news for the NOCCCD and the School of Continuing Education as sig-nificant funding issues were introduced in the initial proposal. Members of the District community worked diligently

to highlight these concerns and offer alternative solutions in Sacramento. The revised proposal is reflective of those efforts.

The “May Revise” includes a regional consortia of K-12 and CCC adult-education schools to plan curriculum and allocation of resources in a coordinated man-ner. $30 million in planning and implementa-tion grants will be awarded in 2013-14, while $500 million will fund adult education provid-ers jointly operated by the regional consortia in 2015-16 and beyond.

As the proposal is studied, more details will be shared with the campus community.

2013 CCCAA State Baseball Championship

GAME 1 – Friday, May 17, 2013 – 12:00 p.m.

#2S Cypress College Chargers (30-14) def. #1N Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs (33-8-1), 7-1

FRESNO – When Cypress College was in need of a victory during the season, they turned to freshman pitcher Stephen Kane. On Friday in the first game of the California Community College Athletic Association State Baseball Championship at John Euless Ballpark, Kane tossed a complete game to lead the Chargers to a 7-1 win over Santa Rosa Junior College, the top-seeded team from Northern California. The win sends Cypress (30-14), the fourth-place team out of the Orange Empire Conference, into the winner’s bracket at 2 p.m., while the Bear Cubs (33-8-1) drop into the loser’s bracket, there they will play a 10 a.m. elimination game.

Cypress broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run single by Sam Tolleson that plated Dylan Moore and Jacob McWilliam. The Chargers would add four more runs in the top of the sixth inning, thanks in part to a fielding error by Bear Cub shortstop Brett Gillespie, who dropped a potential double-play ball. After Blake Davey led off the inning with a base hit, Robert Chavarria hit a ground ball to first baseman Anthony Sequeira. His throw was on line, but Gillespie dropped the throw, which was followed by a walk to Brandon Morones, which chased starting pitcher Bryan Webster (6-3). McWilliam and Dylan Moore each drove in runs with sacrifice flies, while Parker Starr doubled home a run before John Torres rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.

Kane tossed his third complete game of the season, and allowed just one run on 11 hits, while Santa Rosa stranded 10 runners on base. In six of the innings, the Bear Cubs left runners in scoring position, including four on third base. He worked out of jams in the first and second inning, retiring Taylor Martin and Spencer Neve on ground balls. After the Chargers took their 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Kane faced Sequeira with runners at second and third, but induced a ground ball to end the threat.

We are diving into the details of the May Revision, and are concerned that the significant current year deficit is not addressed. The Legislature is now expected to begin taking action on the final budget, with completion by June 15. We will be meeting with the Consultation Council on Thursday and the CEOCCC board on Friday to develop an advocacy response.
