2010 SEASON PREVIEW

“We all have the common goal of

bringing the State Championship back to Cypress College.”

I really like our depth and ath-leticism and I think that will be the key to our success this

season. We have a core of 17 stu-dent athletes who have been work-ing hard since last June. They have put in numerous hours in the fit-lab, weight room, and on the field and hopefully that will all pay off in 2010. We all have the common goal of bringing the state champi-onship back to Cypress College.

We have six talented soph-omores, Amanda Fama, Alyssa Freight, Jackie Orosco, Vanessa Alvarado, Roni Alvarado, and Me-lissa Cascio. All six will be count-ed on to put up some big numbers this year. They have the talent and desire to do something special. Our freshman class con-sists of eleven players. Nicole Nobbe, Katrina Pinkowski, Cris-tina Crissman, Emma Crissman, Brianne Webster, Marilyn To-

riz, Courtney McCarthy, Jennifer Aanderud, Audrey Guillen, Becky Gottfried, and Mia Magalona. All have improved over the fall and are battle tested and ready to go. My coaches, Dennis Blas, Mandy Rockwell, Mike Hicks, and Christa Saindon have done a great job and we all have very high ex-pectations for this team. So you know the drill, sit back, relax, grab yourself a dog and a soda, and enjoy the journey! •

Brad Pickler, one of the most respected coaches in the nation, begins his 23rd season as the Chargers’ head coach. He enters the year with

over 900 career wins. In his 22 seasons, Pickler has led Cypress to five State Championships, 20 straight State Tournament Elite Eight appearances, and 14 Orange Empire Con-ference crowns. His legacy includes directing the Chargers to a record three consecutive state crowns from 1997-1999 with a combined 177-17 mark and a school-record 27-game win streak.

Pickler arrived at Cypress in 1987 taking over a de-pleted program and turning it around overnight with a third place finish in the Orange Empire Conference and the first of his nine conference Coach of the Year awards. He later was featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd section after guiding the Chargers to a 66-5 record and the 1997 State Championship.Pickler owns the state record with five state champi-onships and will be looking for more as the Chargers

seek an unprecedented sixth State Championship. In addi-tion to his five championships, the Chargers also have second (1993 and 2004), third (1992, 1995, 2007), and fourth place (1989, 1994, and 2002) finishes under his tutelage. Pickler, chosen the Orange County Community College Female Sport Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998, is a 1977 graduate of Cal State Fuller-ton and has a master’s degree in special education from Cal Lutheran. He lives in Anaheim with his wife Noel, daughter Paige, and son David. Brad’s parents are Betty and Irv. Pick-ler’s older brother Scott is the head coach of the baseball team at Cypress and has led the Chargers to four state champi-onships.

Noel Pickler – Noe is still teaching third grade at Miller Elementary. She is involved heavily with their PTA Program and anything else they ask her to do. She still takes Paige to skating at 5:00 am and drives David all over town for basketball and baseball. As always, she keeps the ship afloat at our house and believe it or not, she finds the time to workout on the treadmill for an hour a day.

Paige Pickler – Paige is now an eighth grader at Oxford Academy where she is doing quite well and is even a member of Oxford’s cross country team. She continues to ice skate every morning. Paige has also become a pretty good graphic artist. She is really talented. If she could only learn how to clean her room. Paige, you’re still the best, I love you.

David Pickler – David has moved up to fourth grade. He has become quite the basketball star practicing every day with his buddies Wally and Josh. Baseball wise, he will be playing in the pony league. He has very good hands and has a decent hack. He still drives Paige and his mother crazy and he cannot wait to see Mr. Steve and Dewey in Merced. David, like always, we need to stick together. I love you too!

Buzz – Believe it or not, Buzz will turn three this August. He has pretty much become our softball mascot. As a matter of fact, he might become the school mascot. Buzz still loves to chase birds and balls and has become good friends with Amanda. Buzz should be at most of our games. He thinks it’s his field and remember please, no people food even if he begs. He’s really a good dog!

CHARGER 10TH MAN

Scott has been here at Cypress as long as I have, some 23

or 24 years. He really has done a lot for our student athletes here at Cypress College. But he’s always done a little more for our softball team. He has gone out of his way especially this season to get our team stronger and healthier.

Through the years, he has al-ways been there as my wing man when we cook the team

breakfast (he always does the sau-sages). He has also been there to fix me up when someone does some-thing goofy and I get cut and bleed.

He is always there at our home games and when it comes play-off time. We have hosted a regional for twenty straight years and Scott is always there with his training teams, along with tarps, tables, and ice. You name it, he’s got it. We have had a lot of road trips over the years. We have also had some late nights at my house when he is playing my son David in Wii until three or four in the morning. (David usually wins all

the games except for golf.) But most of all, he has been a good friend to myself and my entire family; Noel, Paige, David, and Buzz (he really likes buzz). I appreciate everything you have done and I’m looking forward to many more years doing the things we do. And I know you won’t believe it, but I’ve al-ways been the better athlete!Love ya,Brad

Scott Tucker

2009 SEASON REVIEW

Cypress reached their eighth straight State Tournament in 2009 fin-

ishing with over 45 wins for the fourth year in a row. The Char-gers finished their season fifth in the state with a 46-11 record and collected their eighth straight Orange Empire Conference championship in a row. The Chargers got off to a strong start against some tough opponents. Cypress blew out their first opponent before losing one to the defending 2008 State Champions Cerritos 11-3. Cypress bounced back winning ten straight including four shutouts. The Chargers ran into some more road blocks in March. Cypress lost two straight on the same day while playing in Bakersfield losing 5-3 to a much im-proved Canyons squad and then a narrow 6-5 loss to eventual state champions and rivals Mt. Sac. The Chargers continued to experience grow-ing pains two games later losing to Fullerton break-ing the program’s nine game winning streak over the Hornets. The loss fueled Cypress as they went on to tear through the rest of conference winning the next 22 games straight. Within those next 22 wins, Cypress took avenged many of their earlier losses. They took on Cerritos again and defeated the Falcons with a high scoring 15-13 win. They also defeated Mt. Sac 4-2 to even the ri-valry season series and avenged their loss to Canyons with a 6-5 win. Cypress made a statement against the rival Hornets with a 12-2 win avenging their only con-ference loss. The Chargers also picked up some impressive wins along the way. Cypress escaped a loss to River-side in a 4-3 win and then won two straight one-run wins over Northern California powerhouses Sacra-mento City. The mid-season win streak eventually was halted by a loss to Fresno 5-3 early in April. The Chargers began to show some weakness from there losing two straight to Grossmont, head coach Brad Pickler’s first two losses to the Griffins. The team also suffered a loss to Long Beach City 8-5. Cypress was able to end the regular season strong with three straight wins in

2009 SEASON REVIEW

cluding a season ending win over Fuller-ton. Cypress also clenched their eighth straight Orange Empire Conference Championship, Pickler’s fourteenth overall. Cypress’s strong regular season re-cord earned them a number one seed in playoffs. The Chargers started it off in the regionals against Mt. San Jacinto. Cypress finished the Eagles off cleanly with a 4-0 and 12-3 win to earn a ticket to the second round of regionals. The Chargers hosted LA Mission and almost made history in the bad way as Mission gave Cypress a challenge in regionals for the first time in years. Cy-press had to pull it off in the eighth in-ning with a sacrifice fly play to beat the play at the plate for the 2-1 win. Mission came through in game two stunning the Chargers in the 4-3 loss and forcing a do-or-die game three situation. Cypress utilized their endurance for game three delivering handfuls of runs for the 9-3 win and earned a ticket to their eighth

straight state tournament. Cypress held on to their first seed for the State Tournament taking on the fourth seed from the North, Ohlone. Cypress struggled early but was finally able to put together some offense for runs in the 4-1 win. The Chargers finished the day tak-ing on Mt. Sac in a classic showdown between rivals with a trip to the finals at stake. The drama folded out as adver-tised in the two-and-a-half hour game. Momentum shifted from team to team. Cypress played well and eventually took a 7-2 lead. The momentum shifted quickly in the sixth with Mt. Sac coming out swinging cutting the lead to two and then followed with a three-run walk-off homerun taking the dramatic one run win forcing Cypress into the consolation bracket. Cypress went into day two of the tournament taking on Cerritos for the third time with both teams’ seasons on the line. The Chargers found themselves

playing catchup with the Falcons taking the lead early. Cypress caught Cerritos in the seventh tying the game at 9-9 and forcing extra innings. The teams battled through the extra innings scoreless until Cypress scored one in the eleventh in-ning. Cypress had to just hold Cerritos scoreless for one more at-bat and they would advance to the next round. Cerri-tos refused to fold and put up a two-run walk-off homerun. Cypress ended their season with two straight walk-off home-run one-run losses leaving them short of their sixth state championship. Sophomore Kim Frazier was re-warded for her stellar performance during the State Championship Tour-nament being named to the All-Tour-nament team. Frazier was also named all-State and was joined by teammate, sophomore pitcher Natasha Ruiz. Roni Alvarado and Kayla Van Dieren were named all-Southern California selec-tions.

ence again for their eighth straight conference title and head coach Brad Pickler’s fourteenth overall. Cypress also closed conference play just one win short of a second straight per-fect conference record. The Chargers’ only conference loss of the year came against rival Fullerton in just their second conference game of the year. Cypress followed up by defeating Fullerton in their next two meetings and going through the rest of con-ference perfect. Cypress boasted five First Team All-Conference selec-tions including the conference’s most valuable pitcher, Na-tasha Ruiz. Pickler was also chosen the conference’s Coach of the Year for the third season in the row.

Four of the eight OEC teams (Cy-press, Riverside, Fullerton, and Sad-dleback) earned a berth into the play-offs. All four sur-vived the first round of regionals to make it into the Super Regional round while Cypress and Riverside grabbed two of the four Southern California spots in the State Championship Tournament. Riverside went two-and-out while Cypress finished fifth.

Inning 3: Cypress has runners at first and second, only one out. Can’t score.

Inning 8: Arrowhead discovered in Cypress dugout. In a bold move, and at Coach Heller’s recommendation, Coach Pick-ler puts arrowhead in his pocket. The next two pitches give Riverside two line drives. Coach Pickler throws arrowhead in Riverside dugout. Coach Pickler attempts to throw Coach Heller. Becky Wayland almost goes “yard.” Her 200-foot drive hits the fence for a double.

Inning 10: Riverside has runners on first and second. Doesn’t score.

Inning 14: Cypress has runners on second and third, one out. Stephanie Amundson is thrown out at the plate. Bang-bang play.

Inning 18: Coach Heller grows weak, claims he is becoming “delerical.”

Inning 20: Cypress loads the bases with no outs. Sandy Alvarino is thrown out at the plate after tagging up on a Priscilla Villagomez fly ball.

Inning 21: Coach Hopkins calls his employer at 7:30 pm. Tells him he won’t make it by 6:30 pm.

Inning 22: Coaches Hopkins and Heller don rally caps. They produce an effect, but not the desired one.

Inning 23: Six-pack of Dad’s root beer appears in Cypress dugout, ending the sunflower seed rationing of the first 22 in-nings. Cypress gets runner on third with two outs. No score.

Inning 25: Julie Mee thrown out at third trying for a triple with one out. The umpire’s bad call denies Mee of her first career triple. She unambiguously shares her opinion of the call with the Umpire.

Inning 26: Coach Heller’s van is dented by a foul ball.

Inning 28: Riverside has runners on second and third with one out. Moore gets out of the jam.

Inning 30: Coach Heller eyes remaining players in the dugout, rubs his hands and licks his chops. Luckily for Jamie, Becky, Theresa, and Stacy, Cypress scores in the next inning.

Inning 31: 9:06 pm. Catcher Dee Shepherd awarded Quote of the Day honors: “Can we work on pickoffs to first tomorrow at practice?” Villagomez walks, steals second, and scores on an RBI single to right-center by Shepherd. There is a collision at home plate and the ball rolls free.

*Other Notes* Cypress outfielder Lola Herrera got lost and never made it to the game.* Cypress scorekeeper Jamie Megna broke school record with 30 1/2 in-nings. A bathroom break prevented her from going the distance.* Cypress’ team batting average was .178 (18-101). Riverside was .089 (9-101).* Noel Parker pitched the first 12 in-nings for Cypress. Colleen Moore went the final 19. Sandy Mathis of Riverside went the distance.* After the game, Coach Pickler an-nounced, “We are not going to have practice tomorrow (Thursday). What’s there left to practice? Everything that could have happened, did.”

Colleen Moore pitched the last 19 innings and struck out 16.

Cypress repeated in 1998 with their second straight State Championship in a 10-0 blowout win over Long Beach City. The Chargers converted six Viking errors while winning pitcher Reanna Mendoza held Long Beach to three hits. Sandra Mulder had three hits and three runs for the Chargers. Mandy Rockwell, who won three games through the tournament, was named the most Valuable Pitcher and Ro Lutz, the Charger third baseman, earned the tournament’s Gold Glove award.

The Chargers produced an unprecedented three-peat with their third straight State Championship in 1999. Cypress powered through the tournament undefeated and won the final game in a statement against conference rivals Saddleback 11-1. Mandy Rockwell pitched all four games allowing just three runs all tournament and was named the tournament’s most valuable pitcher for the second straight year. Chargers Win Record Fifth State TitleCypress outlasts the Mounties.May 14th, 2006Redding, Calif. - Celebration ensued after Cypress retired the last out Sunday as the Chargers earned their fifth State Cham-pionship. Cypress came back from a one run loss earlier in the day to defeat Mt. Sac 1-0 to take the title. All five of Cypress’s championships were won under the tutelage of head coach Brad Pickler. Freshman third baseman Brittnay Hay drove in the game winning run to propel the Chargers to the Champi-onship. It was clear from the beginning that the game would be another defensive bat-tle. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez got her first pitching start of the tournament for the championship. She struck out the first batter looking before retiring the next two Mounties bat-ters in a row. Gutierrez would retire ten batters in a row before allowing the first Mt. Sac player to reach base. While Gutierrez and the defense held the Mt. Sac hitters scoreless, the Chargers kept plugging away at bat. The Chargers were having a similar fate to their game ear-lier in the day not being able to get a hit until the fourth inning. Luckily in the fifth, Cypress pulled out two hits in the inning to score. Freshman outfielder Sabrina Hernandez singled to cen-ter to lead off. Freshman outfielder Jade Espinoza laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hernandez to second. Gutierrez ground-

ed out to second moving Hernandez over before Hay singled to third to bring home Hernandez for the game winning run. Cypress could not get a hit after the fifth but it was enough for the 1-0 victory. Gutierrez struck out two batters in the seventh and forced a ground out to end the game. She allowed just three hits while striking out six to finish her freshman season 17-2.

Cypress celebrated the victory before an eleven hour bus ride back home. Cypress was awarded the newly designed State Championship trophy along with numerous individual acco-lades. Gutierrez won Most Valuable Player hon-ors for the State Tournament getting two RBIs

and winning the championship game on the mound. Sopho-more pitcher Elisa Graves earned Most Valuable Pitcher as she pitched the first four games for Cypress allowing just two earned runs with 18 strikeouts for a tournament ERA of .540. Espinoza won Golden Glove honors for her fielding work over the tournament including a homerun saving catch through the fence in their first game against Mt. Sac. The Chargers close out the season 53-5, their best record since 1998. They earned their fifth straight Orange Empire Conference Championship, the eleventh overall for Pickler and their fifth overall State Championship.

While Gutierrez and the de-fense held the Mt. Sac hitters scoreless, the Chargers kept plugging away at bat.

In recent years, the baseball, softball, women’s soccer and wom-en’s basketball programs have taken

center stage. In 1997 the baseball and softball squads, coached by brothers Scott and Brad Pickler, cap-tured state champi-onships. The base-ball crown was the third of the 1990s under the direction of Scott Pick-

ler who has over 700 wins in his 22 years at the school and captured the state championship again in 2003. Trevor Hoffman of the San Di-ego Padres, who played at Cypress in 1986 and 1987, is a four-time Ma-jor League all-star and

holds the MajorLeague record for career saves. Brad Pickler, in his 19 cam-paigns, has also had a great deal of success. He has led the softball team to five state titles while winning over 800 games. The Chargers were the first California school to capture three consecutive state champion-ships (1997, 1998, 1999). Cypress only started playing in-tercollegiate wom-

en’s soccer in 1991, but the late Ray Haas quickly built the pro-gram into a consistent winner. The Chargers won State Champion-ships in 1998, 1999 and 2004. Cypress’ 27-0 season in 1999 was rewarded with a

No. 1 national ranking by the Na-tional Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cypress captured its first wom-en’s basketball championship in 2005. Margaret Mohr’s team set a school record with 28 wins against five defeats.

Cypress enjoys strong support from the com-munity and student body, who are part of the traditionally popu-lar athletic program.
