Considering the relative overabundance ofpiano literature, it would be seemingly foolhardyto stage a composition competition promotingthe creation of new pieces for piano. Everythingappears to exist already, even pieces for child-ren and young adults. Still, far too frequently it isprecisely this contemporary „educational litera-ture“ which proves lacking in artistic qualities;accompanying a reduction in technical difculty, with an objectionable reduction in the notion ofwhat children and young adults are capable ofunderstanding – both intellectually and emotio-nally.We are looking for piano pieces written forchildren and young adults which, although limi-ted in their technical difculty, remain uncompro-mising in their artistic aim; pieces written witha contemporary compositional technique whichoffer the young student stimulus, insight and newexperiences: experiences about oneself and theworld in which we live. With the creation of this competition, the InstituteLudwig van Beethoven would like to ensure thatsuch quality pieces are more prevalent in thefuture and to this end we invite composers toaccept the challenge by enrolling in the compe-tition.In the course of a week’s time an audiencecomprised of students, teachers, and performingartists will be given the chance to listen as thejury evaluates the different ways this challengehas been addressed by the composers. The jurywill assess not only the artistic quality of thepieces, but also the question: what does a pianostudent learn from these pieces? And in additionthe discussion will cover what makes a pieceexciting and what is future-oriented; while at thesame time never loosing sight of the technicallimits implied when composing for children and young adults.
