217 Pets Flew on Wings of Aloha in 2013 How the MHS Wings of Aloha Program Reached Across an Ocean to Inspire Communities to Save Lives

With an annual intake of approximately 9,500 animals and a limited number of local rescues and available homes, we have to approach urgent, immediate problems like pet overpopulation creatively and take extraordinary measures to save lives. We may have come up with the crazy idea of flying our homeless pets to rescues on the mainland, but it was supported entirely by folks like you - and with your help, 217 unwanted animals left our shelter this year to find Forever Homes on the mainland, creating space and improving the lives of countless pets.

It’s 2014, which means it’s the perfect time to reflect on all that we have accomplished together through the Wings of Aloha program. Wings of Aloha has been made possible in every sense by our community - our MHS ‘Ohana. Flights for our homeless pets are 100% funded by supporters like you, and MHS staff work tirelessly to make the necessary preparations for each pet’s transfer. Now that we are well into the New Year, how are those resolutions going? Well if any of them involved helping Maui’s pets, then we are here to help!

There are many ways you can make a difference for our animals: Donating money or needed items, being a responsible pet owner, adopting, advocating/educating and volunteering your time and talents. In fact, there are several ideas right here in this newsletter that can help you out in some of these areas.

We’re already gearing up for this year’s Visitor Industry Charity Walk on May 10 . Consider a sponsorship and/or raise pledges to support the programs that help save lives and protect our beloved pets. But whatever you decide, mark your calendars and bring the WHOLE family out for a fun morning and maybe even a little exercise (bet that was on your resolution list as well!)

All February we will be focusing on the importance of spay/neuter as part of responsible pet ownership. We will have great promotions, spe-cial clinics and educational tips that you can take advantage of personally, or share with friends and family.

And last but not least, our Love-A-Bull adoption promos are just one of many ways we help get the word out about the wonderful pets we have at our shelter needing a lifelong loving home. Adopting a pet from the Maui Humane Society is one of the most direct ways to positively impact a pet’s life and might we add, have more than a little positive effect on your life as well. Together, we can make 2014 a great year for Maui’s pets!

have found that our MHS ‘Ohana extends beyond Maui to include all who are willing and able to work with us to give Maui’s homeless pets every chance possible at a good life. In the past year, Maui Humane Society partnered with roughly a dozen shelters and rescues in Oahu, Oregon, Calgary and Colorado to find homes for our pets.

While rescues on Maui were able to accept 26 dogs and 6 rabbits for transfer in 2013, the Wings of Aloha program has enabled us to transfer an additional 190 dogs and 27 cats into adoption-guaranteed care.

The Wings of Aloha program and the amazing support it has had in the community has inspired contributions from across oceans. Most importantly, a glance at our Facebook page or any of our e-newsletters will show clear evidence that the Wings of Aloha program has had a positive impact on so many pets’ (and peoples’!) lives. With your help, Wings of Aloha will continue to truly save and improve the lives of Maui’s pets.

Happy EndingsProof that your support makes a difference!

HAZELNow lives: Kihei, Maui, Hawai’i

Do you remember Hazel, our featured adoptable from the winter issue? When she was surrendered February 23rd, she immediately won over shelter staff with her playful ways and sociable nature. Cats, dogs, humans…she befriended everyone she met!

We sent her to our Hanai Helpers at South Shore Veterinary Clinic, figuring it would take no time at all before her forever family found her. Five whole months passed and happy-go-lucky Hazel remained at South Shore as their star greeter. Her spirit never faltered and it eventually paid off when in walked Mark. It was love at first sight!

“She’s awesome.” said Mark when we contacted him to see how Hazel was settling in. It would appear her love of paper bags hasn’t faltered either! “She’s very smart; we are currently training her to come on command”. She even has a few new tricks up her furry little sleeves…like figuring out how to get into the bird cage! “Not to get at the bird though,” Mark pointed out. “She’s just showing off!”

BELLA (formerly Aurora)Now lives: Hilo, Big Island, Hawai’i

When we found Aurora in our overnight kennels on November 22, we knew that with her pretty big eyes and happy smile she would be sure to catch someone’s eye – and boy did she! We were contacted a few weeks later by the Ross ‘ohana, who had recently adopted MHS alum Buckley (now named Kaipo). They had seen Aurora’s profile on our Facebook page and immediately fallen in love. After Aurora was spayed and given the go-ahead to travel, we booked her on a flight to Hilo to join her expectant new forever family. With so few homes here on Maui we are delighted at the success of our off-island adoptions. Thanks to our website, Facebook and Petfinder our visitors are now just a click away from finding their perfect companion. When the Ross family adopted Kaipo they were living on Oahu, so when they moved to Big Island we were overjoyed they chose to add one more MHS alumni to their ohana!

“Bella and Kaipo are the perfect couple,” Aurora’s forever mom Crystal Ross reports. “They play nicely together and then they come inside and snuggle on the couch together all day. She just completes us. She’s great with the kids, too! I am not sure what her life was like before and to think of the possibilities makes me sad… but as the saying goes, ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure – and she is definitely our treasure.”

MOLLY (formerly Foxy)Now lives: Portland, Oregon

When Foxy first came to MHS, she was in serious need of a fresh start. She was rescued from a sad situation where she had been left tied to a clothes line with no shade, food or water and was quite thin. With her megawatt smile, bright shining eyes and can-do attitude, she quickly became a staff favorite all around. Foxy became a regular for playtime with our Helping Paws Visitor Volunteers. Always up for fun, she quickly won the hearts of the Bright family on their visit to Maui.

After a few weeks upon returning home, they still couldn’t get her out of their thoughts. That’s when the emails started, and this is where it gets really interesting! Foxy was already a candidate for our Wings of Aloha Transfer Program, where she was all set to fly to the Mainland to be adopted out by Tender Care Animal Rescue… which just happens to be right near where the Bright family lives! With all the stars aligned, Foxy was off to start her new life as a perfectly pampered pooch named Molly who loves every minute she spends with her new ‘ohana playing in the snow, laying by the hearth inside and being warmed by the love of the Forever Family she’s always deserved!

Field Ops to the Rescue: Officer Davis Breaks Blocks to Save Wally

One day in November, a tiny stray orange kitten was exploring the world when he stumbled (as kittens tend to do), and became stuck within the crevices of a hollow cinder block wall. When all was said and done, the kitten had wedged himself four feet deep inside and was now completely unable to move – so he did what anyone would do- he began to cry for help.

We don’t know how long Wally was trapped before Cathy heard sounds coming from the wall surrounding her Kahului home and called the Maui Humane Society for help. Officer Marty Davis arrived at Cathy’s home to assess the situation and “Sure enough, you could hear this sad sounding little cry coming from inside the wall.”

Many of the holes in the cinder block wall had been filled with mortar, and there was no way for Officer Davis to see exactly where Wally was located. The mortar also made it impossible for the Officer to reach the kitten, even if he were visible. It was at this point that Cathy told Officer Davis, “If you need to break apart the wall to rescue the kitten, you have my permission to do it.”

Wally was so thoroughly stuck he could not move – but eventually Officer Davis was able to free the kitten from what would have surely been his concrete tomb. “He was understandably very scared,” Davis said, “but I held him, and he seemed to calm down.”

Wally was most likely born stray, so MHS Director of Animal and Client Services Jamie Fitzpatrick decided he could really benefit from a few weeks in foster care to recover, grow stronger and become more socialized. She welcomed Wally into her own home, where he quickly came out of his shell and became best of friends with Jamie’s 150 pound Mastiff, Dutch.

By the time Wally returned to the shelter he was plump with a beautiful, silky and shiny coat and bright eyes. He was quite the ‘talker’, chatting up anyone who would listen-and quickly captured the heart of his new Forever mom, Kristin Michele. Today “Wall-e” (the spelling has been changed) is a happy, healthy and beloved housecat – all thanks to Cathy, Kristin, and his MHS ‘Ohana!

So Officer Davis began the meticulous process of breaking down the wall in an effort to rescue the trapped kitten. Fortunately the wall was old, so the mortar crumbled without too much trouble. Brick by brick, Officer Davis deconstructed the wall until finally in the rubble of the very last row Davis caught a glimpse of matted orange fur.

Would you like to join our kennel sponsorship pro-gram? When you become a sponsor, a personalized plaque will be placed on your choice of either a dog or cat kennel for one year. Plaques can be personalized in your name, your company’s name, or in honor or memory of a beloved family member, special friend, or cherished pet. Your plaque will be seen by the thou-sands of people who visit our shelter annually so the entire community will know you care! Annual spon-sorships are $1,200, and can be paid monthly ($100/month) or in one payment. Your gift of sponsorship is also tax-deductible. By sponsoring a kennel, you help us offer a second chance to so many homeless pets, providing them with shelter, health care, and an opportunity to be adopted into a permanent, loving home. For more information, please contact Cynthia at (808) 870-4423 or visit www.mauihumanesociety.org and select “Sponsor a kennel” on the Ways to Give menu bar. Mahalo!
