05/1/2004 to 04/30/2006 National Institutes of Health, National Institute for Nursing Research. R03 award for the project “Stress and MRI Lesion in Multiple Sclerosis”.

Two years of support to investigate the relationships among cytokine production, disease symptoms and brain lesions as detectable using magnetic resonance imaging. Study involves quantification of lesion, measurement of peripheral cytokine production and assessment of psychological variables.

07/01/02-06/30/05 Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Academic Affiliations. Post-Doctoral Nursing Fellowship.

An investigator initiated award of two-year’s salary support as a post-doctoral nursing fellow at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital. Awarded a third fellowship year in January 2004. Attended Resident Lectures in Department of Neurology. Audited course in Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology and received advanced instruction in the conduct of research. Project Sponsors: George Siegel, MD, Chief of Neurology Service at Hines V.A. and Linda Janusek, PhD., RN, Professor of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago. Project Director, Lauren Lawson, PhD., RN, Chief of Nursing Service for Research, Hines VA.

07/01/01-09/30/02 National Multiple Sclerosis Association. Pilot Research Grant developed in Collaboration with Herbert Mathews, Ph.D., for project “Psychological and Immunological Impact of Stress upon MS Patients” ($27,500).

The project focus was on psychologic modulation of immune function in control subjects and individuals with multiple sclerosis. The project differed from the work below in that here the focus was on a select profile of cytokines and chemokines with pro-inflammatory properties that may be involved in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Variables included; cytokine production, chemokine production, perceived stress, coping profile, quality of life, appraised life events, disease symptomatology and illness uncertainty.

09/30/99-08/01/01 National Institutes of Health, National Research Service Award (Pre-doctoral). Two years of support as pre-doctoral fellowship for the project “Stress-Immune Interactions in Multiple Sclerosis” (Approx. $35,000).

The relationship between psychological variables (perceived stress, coping style, life events and mood state) and immune function was examined. Immune function was measured through mitogen stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Cell culture supernatant was assayed for the presence of a restricted number of cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10., IL-12, IL-13, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, TGF-Beta1). In controls, perceived stress and other measures of psychologic distress were significantly correlated with select Th1 related cytokines. For those with MS, perceived stress and psychologic distress were correlated with select Th1 and Th2 derived cytokines. A difference was also noted to exist in the relationship between coping style and cytokine production between normative controls and those with MS.
