MATTHEWChapter 19:1-12
DIVORCE AND ADULTERY
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Matthew 18 – “process” for keeping peace.
1. Step # 1 - one-on-one
a) If they listen – the person restored
2. Step #2 - take 2 or 3 people.a) If they listen – all
has been gained!3. Step #3 – matter before the leadership.4. Step #4 –treated as a “heathen”.
a) Nothing spiritually in common!b) They would not
even eat with them.
B. This process is serious business!
1. 1Corinthians 5:1-5
C. Christians to handle their differences, in the church:
1. 1Corinthians 6:1-4 a) Romans 12:9-21
(1) Disciples arguing which one was
the greatest!
D. Divorce and remarriage.
II. Matthew 19:1-3
A. Question from = the Pharisees!
1. “To test Him”. a) People were divided then.
(1) Divorce for any reason.
(2) Divorce only in case of adultery. (a) One faction to be
displeased!(i) The “original plan.”
III. Matthew 19:4-6
A. Marriage for a lifetime!
1. Pharisees think they have Him.
IV. Matthew 19:7
A. Deuteronomy 24:1-2
1. Moses said it was OK.
V. Matthew 19:8-9
A. Verse 8
1. Sin distorted men’s view.
2. “Allowed” as a matter of civil law.
a) Restores the original plan.
3. ONE legitimate reason for divorce! a) Divorce for other
reason - remarriage adulterous.
VI. Matthew 19:10
A. “Better not to marry in the first place?”
1. How common divorce had become.2. Only a few without
the need for marriage. VII. Matthew 19:11-12
A. Applied to eunuchs they had no need for sex.
1. “You do have a choice!”
VIII. To close with this
A. “What do I do now!”
1. We serve a God of forgiveness.
a) Adultery is a sin.
