Year Fall 2012

Tulane’s URBANbuild program is offered as a design - build studio to fourth year under-graduate students. Traditionally the students design and build a house. In the fall of 2012, 20 students were given the task of designing a mixed use building to be built in 2 or 3 phas-es that would help re-establish a commercial corridor along Lasalle Street. After initial de-sign, I worked with 2 others, Aaron Schenker & Liz Kovacevic, to develop a facade system for the building. Our response was cladding the building in hardee panel, with a brick ve-neer wrapping the ends and rear of the build-ing. An aluminum louver system wraps the front of the building acting as a guard rail and privacy screen for the residences and cafe.

Year Spring 2013
Location Central City, New Orleans, LA
Professors Byron Mouton, Tom Holloman
Partner Harmony Neighborhood Development
The urbanBUILD08 program was open-end-ed. The first few weeks of the spring were used as a design charette that resulted in 6 vendor “Pods” that move around the site on a caster system. The Pods reconfigure on the site to adapt to different programmatic needs. In contrast to the construction of a house, this project had very few comparable precedents, and therefore an undefined “gold-standard” for construction. This forced us to be more creative and inventive with the construction of the site and Pods. As a result, we manu-factured most of the parts and pieces of the pods. Students learned to work extensively with concrete, wood, and steel. 10 students participated in the construction under the di-rection of Professors Byron Mouton and Tom Holloman. Construction Began in January and was completed in early May 2013.

This project is a new center for the study of figurative / realist art on Tulane’s uptown campus. To begin, two sustained hand draw-ings were completed. One, a still life to under-stand the process of realist art, and a second, an observational site drawing to understand the complexity of the neighborhood scale.Situated at the convergence of the University, the Power Plant, and the residential neighbor-hood, the site is the complex intersection of these three scales. The Program consists of study areas as well as several thousand square feet of university office space. The massing and facade of the building reveals the complex and contradictory nature of the site and the program, starting with a rational mass with strategic cuts through it that is clad in different size cuts of slate.

This project is a third-year comprehensive studio project as well as an entry into theACSA Steel Building Competition. The con-cept comes from the idea that where Profes-sion thrives where Theory and Practice over-lap. This idea was translated into theinitial programming and massing of the proj-ect. Theory, Practice, and Profession wereseparated. Theory and Practice take the form of two interlocking “C” shapes while Profes-sion occuppies the space where they overlap. The building is clad with stainless andcorten steel panels, each 2’x12’ with varying degrees of perforation. 6 types of panelsare used to create a gradient of perforation from “opaque” to “transparent” to controlview and lighting within the building.

The addition of the New City to Jintang fo-cuses on freeing up green space along the river, as well as two other “branches” of green space that come off of it. Along the river, there is a bike / walking path, a large City Park, and the civic institutions. The city’s residential and light commercial districts are distributed throughout the city, with the Cen-tral Business District at the core of the city. Cutting through the CBD is a main boulevard with a large neutral ground that can be occup-pied, and contains public sculpture.

I have always been interested in drawing, and that passion spilled over into photography and watercolor painting. I can usually be found with a sketchbook in hand. I use drawing as a means of understanding the world around me. I find that drawing forces me to recog-nize and understand aspects of the world that I would have otherwise overlooked. In my architectural work, I use drawing, painting, and photography in a similar way. Not only are they a form of representing ideas, they are also a way to observe, learn and understand problems that are being solved through de-sign.
