ARCHITECTURE+LANDSCAPE
MATT WITTMAN
INSIDE OUTSIDE
Matt Wittman believes in an integrated landscape+architecture vision founded on the idea that buildings and
landscapes could be combined into one interconnected whole.
By composing environments with livable outdoor spaces, these designs support contemporary active lifestyles
that value an awareness of the outside. Blurring boundaries between buildings and gardens, the relationship
between indoor and outdoor space is brought into balance.
With a simple modern design sensibility, timeless landscapes can be created that enable people to be more
connected with nature and each other.

Transitions are blurred between indoor and outdoor
areas so that space is maximized and residents can
easily move in and out of screened courtyard patios and
live outside during three seasons. Views into the house
and out of the living and dining room are filtered by trees,
so that once can enjoy privacy from the urban setting
and experience a feeling of openness and connection
to nature.

EXPLORATORIUM MUSEUM
Mr. Wittman worked with the internationally acclaimed
Exploratorium: the Museum of Science, Art and Human
Perception in San Francisco. Working with GLS,
the design included the partial removal and seismic
strengthening of a two-acre asphalt loading dock
suspended over the bay on pilings, and a new public
plaza and lexible outdoor exhibit areas related to the
observation of natural phenomena such as wind, fog,
and tides. Matt’s role included conceptual through DD
design leadership and also preparation and presentation
of the design vision to the client and community.

EPICUREUM FOOD MARKET
Epicureum is a premier culinary destination for Phase 1
of the Des Moines Marina loor development providing
the infrastructure for a collection of local food & beverage
vendors. The 10,000 SF pavilion will be a simple, high
quality market with butcher paper style servings and
understated accents promoting marina activities and
Puget Sound lifestyle. A 1,200 foot linear promenade
along the waterfront will have seating, lighting, and
enhanced access to docks, boat launches, ishing, and
maximize connection to the bountiful waters of Poverty
Bay. Matt’s role is lead designer, project manager, and

UNIVERSITY OF PUGET SOUND
Mr Wittman worked with the university and Bohlin
Cywinski Jackson for over three years as project architect
in a variety of roles and leadership, including lead design
on Commencement Hall and detailed design and CA
through the completion of Weyerhaeuser Hall. The
southern end of campus was transformed through the
addition of two new buildings and the construction of
Commencement Walk, completing the master plan
and connecting the heart of the historic campus to
the Field House. Bringing together ive departments in
the Health Sciences, Weyerhaeuser Center for Health
Sciences enhances the intersections of knowledge
between research and clinical work, fostering academic
collaboration, and attracting top faculty and students to
University of Puget Sound.

MARQUEZ HALL & PLAZA
As the irst phase of the Earth Energy Institute at the
Colorado School of Mines, Marquez Hall opens onto
a generous public plaza designed to foster student
interaction. My role included lead design for the public
outdoor space, and design development and detailing
for key design features including a grand central stair
and glass bridge. An open gallery on the west side
of the irst loor has indoor outdoor low that runs the
length of the building with programmed public spaces
and informal areas to gather and relax. Xeriscape and
native plantings are used to minimize water use and
thrive in the high desert climate. In collaboration with
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and InSite.

BAINBRIDGE GARDEN
A courtyard garden on Bainbridge Island is enclosed
by double sided cedar screens, gently filtering views
and creating privacy from the street. An intimate dining
space is created for small parties, and a blend of hard
and soft surfaces make distinct spaces for gathering and
walking. Custom precast pavers are offset to recall an
informal path on the beach.

BIOGRAPHY
Matt Wittman, AIA LEED AP
Originally from the Paciic Northwest, Matt studied and worked in
landscape architecture and planning before receiving his Master of
Architecture in 2003 from UC Berkeley, where he was awarded the
Gerson Prize for Design Excellence.
Working in California and Latin America, Matt was inspired by the clean
simplicity of courtyard houses, where abundant windows and open loor
plans expand interior spaces and bring the outdoors in. His work continues
the modernist tradition of integration with nature and doing more with less.
Prior to founding Wittman Estes, Matt worked with some of the world’s top
landscape irms, and was an architect with the acclaimed ofice of Bohlin
Cywinski Jackson where he was a designer for landscapes, houses,
apartments, student residences, and the chair for the Strategic Planning
Initiative for R+D and Design.
Matt is currently a visiting critic at the University of Oregon and University of
Washington Departments of Architecture.
He is a licensed architect in the State of Washington, and a LEED
accredited professional.
