1 GENERAL INFORMATIONTheSTANDARDHORIZONMATRIXSeriesGX2000 and GX2150 Marine VHF/FMMarine transceiveraredesigned tobeused inUSA, International,andCanadianMarinebands.TheGX2000 and GX2150 can be operated from 11to16VDCandhaveaswitchableRFoutputpowerof1wattor25watts.
MATRIX AIS+ GX2150IntegratesadualchannelAIS (Automatic IdentificationSystem) receiver todisplayAIS vessel information (MMSI,CallSign,ShipName,BRG,DST,SOGandCOG)directlyontheVHFradio,soyouwillknowwhatisoutthereinanyconditions.TheGX2150 is also capable of entering and saving up to 100waypoints,whichmaybeselectedandnavigatedtobyusingauniquenavigationcompassdisplay.TheMATRIXAIS+allowsyoutocontactanAISShipdirectlyusingDSC,showyourvesselspositioninrelationtoAIStargetsandalertyouwhenanAISshipmaybeapproachingtooclosetoyourloca-tionvia theClosestPointofApproach (CPA)Alarm.To receiveAIS targetsfromshipswithAIS classAorB transponders, simply connect thenormalVHFantenna(onlyoneantennaneeded!)andaGPSwithNMEA0183ouut-put.
MATRIX GX2000 ForthemarinerwhoalreadyhasAISon-boardanddesiresaVHFwiththefeaturesof theMATRIXAIS, theMATRIXGX2000 has a connection for an AISreceiverortransponder.
TheMATRIXSeriesVHFsarecapableofDSC(DigitalSelectiveCalling)ITUClassDoperation.ClassDoperationallowscontinuousreceivingofDigitalSelectiveCallingfunctionsonchannel70eveniftheradioisreceivingacall.TheMATRIXSeriesVHF’s operateonall currently-allocatedmarine chan-nelswhichareswitchableforusewithUSA,International,orCanadianregu-lations.Emergencychannel16canbeimmediatelyselectedfromanychan-nel bypressing the red 9
16 key.NOAAweather channel canalsobeaccessedimmediatelybypressingandholdingthe CLR
WX key.

5 GETTING STARTED5.1 PROHIBITED COMMUNICATIONSTheFCCprohibitsthefollowingcommunications:
• Falsedistressoremergencymessages:• Messagesto“anyboat”exceptinemergenciesandradiotests;• Messagestoorfromavesselonland;• Transmissionwhileonland;• Obscene,indecent,orprofanelanguage(potentialfineof$10,000).
5.2 ABOUT VHF RADIOThe radio frequenciesused in theVHFmarineband lie between156and158MHzwithsomeshorestationsavailablebetween161and163MHz.ThemarineVHFbandprovidescommunicationsoverdistances thatareessen-tially “lineofsight” (VHFsignalsdonot travelwell throughobjectssuchasbuildings,hillsor trees).Actual transmissionrangedependsmuchmoreonantenna type,gainandheight thanon thepoweroutputof the transmitter.Onafixedmount25Wradiotransmissionexpecteddistancescanbegreaterthan15miles, foraportable5W radio transmission theexpecteddistancecanbegreaterthan5milesin“lineofsight”.
5.3 SELECTING AN ANTENNAMarineantennasaremadetoradiatesignalsequally inallhorizontaldirec-tions,butnotstraightup.Theobjectiveofamarineantenna is toenhancethesignal toward thehorizon.Thedegree towhich this isaccomplished iscalledtheantenna’sgain. It ismeasuredindecibels(dB)andisoneof themajor factors in choosinganantenna. In termsof effective radiatedpower(ERP),antennasareratedonthebasisofhowmuchgaintheyhaveoveratheoretical antennawith zerogain.A3-foot, 3dBgainantenna representstwiceasmuchgainovertheimaginaryantenna.
Typicallya3-foot3dBgainstainlesssteelwhip isusedonasailboatmast.Thelonger8-foot6dBfiberglasswhipisprimarilyusedonpowerboatsthatrequiretheadditionalgain.

5.4 COAXIAL CABLEVHFantennasareconnectedtothetransceiverbymeansofacoaxialcable–ashieldedtransmissionline.Coaxialcableisspecifiedbyit’sdiameterandconstruction.
For runs less than20 feet,RG-58/U,about1/4 inch indiameter isagoodchoice.For runsover 20 feet but less than50 feet, the largerRG-8XorRG-213/Ushouldbeusedforcablerunsover50feetRG-8Xshouldbeused.For installation of the connector onto the coaxial cable refer to the figure below.
Togetyourcoaxcablethroughafittingandintoyourboat’sinterior,youmayhavetocutofftheendplugandreattachitlater.Youcandothisifyoufollowthedirectionsthatcomewiththeconnector.Besuretomakegoodsolderedconnections.
5.5 DISTRESS AND HAILING (CHANNEL 16)Channel16isknownastheHailandDistressChannel.Anemergencymaybe defined as a threat to life or property. In such instances, be sure thetransceiver isonandset toCHANNEL16.Thenuse the followingproce-dure:
1. Press themicrophonepush-to-talk switchand say “Mayday,Mayday,Mayday.Thisis , , ”(yourvessel’sname).
2. Thenrepeatonce:“Mayday, ”(yourvessel’sname).3. Now report your position in latitude/longitude, or bygivinga trueor
magneticbearing(statewhich)toawell-knownlandmarksuchasanavi-gationaidorgeographicfeaturesuchasanislandorharborentry.
4. Explainthenatureofyourdistress(sinking,collision,aground,fire,heartattack,life-threateninginjury,etc.).
5. Statethekindofassistanceyourdesire(pumps,medicalaid,etc.).

6. Reportthenumberofpersonsaboardandconditionofanyinjured.7. Estimatethepresentseaworthinessandconditionofyourvessel.8. Giveyourvessel’sdescription: length,design(powerorsail),colorand
otherdistinguishingmarks.The total transmissionshouldnotexceed1minute.
9. End themessageby saying “OVER”.Release themicrophonebuttonandlisten.
10.If there is noanswer, repeat theaboveprocedure. If there is still noresponse,tryanotherchannel.
NOTE
The GX2000 and GX2150haveDSCDistresscalling,thatcantrans-mitadistresscall digitally toall shipswithcompatibleDSC radios.Refertosection“9 DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC)”.
5.6 CALLING ANOTHER VESSEL (CHANNEL 16 OR 9)Channel 16maybeused for initial contact (hailing)with another vessel.However, itsmost importantuse is foremergencymessages.Thischannelmustbemonitoredatalltimesexceptwhenactuallyusinganotherchannel.
ItismonitoredbytheU.S.andCanadianCoastGuardsandbyothervessels.Use of channel 16 for hailing must be limited to initial contact only.Call-ingshouldnotexceed30seconds,butmayberepeated3timesat2-minuteintervals.Inareasofheavyradiotraffic,congestiononchannel16resultingfromitsuseasahailingchannelcanbereducedsignificantlyinU.S.watersbyusingchannel 9astheinitialcontact(hailing)channelfornon-emergencycommunications.Here,also,callingtimeshouldnotexceed30secondsbutmayberepeated3timesat2-minuteintervals.
Prior tomaking contactwith another vessel, refer to the channel charts inthismanual, and select anappropriate channel for communicationsafterinitialcontact.Forexample,Channels68and69oftheU.S.VHFChartsaresomeof the channels available to non-commercial (recreational) boaters.Monitoryourdesiredchannelinadvancetomakesureyouwillnotbeinter-ruptingothertraffic,andthengobacktoeitherchannel16or9foryourinitialcontact.
Whenthehailingchannel(16or9)isclear,pressthePTT button on the mic andstate thenameof theothervesselyouwish tocalland then“this is” followedby thenameof your vessel and yourStationLicense (CallSign)then release the PTT buttononthemic.Whentheothervesselreturnsyourcall, immediately request another channel bypressing thePTT button on

themicandsaying“go to,”thenumberoftheotherchannel,say“over” and release the PTT buttononthemic.Thenswitchtothenewchannel.Whenthenewchannelisnotbusy,calltheothervessel.
Afteratransmission,say“over,”andreleasethemicrophone’spush-to-talk(PTT) switch.Whenall communicationwith theother vessel is completed,endthelasttransmissionbystatingyourCallSignandtheword“out.”NotethatitisnotnecessarytostateyourCallSignwitheachtransmission,onlyatthebeginningandendofthecontact.

5.10 WHAT IS THE RANGE FOR AIS RECEIVERS?SinceAISuses similar frequenciesasamarineVHF radio, it has similarradio reception capabilities -whicharebasically lineof sight.ThismeansthatthehighertheVHFantennaismounted,thegreaterthereceptionareawillbe.ReceptionfromClassAvessels thatare20oreven30milesawayon open water is not uncommon as their antennas are mounted high off the water.ClassB transpondersuse lower power for transmissions; thereforeyoucanexpectClassBvesselstobeacquiredwhentheyare5to10milesaway.

2. Install the ferrite core (suppliedwith theCMP31 (RAM3+)RemoteStationMicrophone) to theextension cable, then snap its twohalvestogether,pertheillustrationonthenextpage.
3. Attach the ferritecoreascloseaspossible to theMICplug,asshownbelow.
4. Finally,wind someplastic tapearound each ferr i te core, toprevent vibration from causing thetwohalvestosplitapart.

The GX2000/GX2150 can receive weather alerts when on a weather channel and on the last selected weather channel during scanning modes or while on anotherchannel.
WhenanalertisreceivedonaNOAAweatherchan-nel,scanningwillstopandthetransceiverwillemitaloudbeep to alert theuser of aNOAAbroadcast.Pressanykeytostopthealertandreceivetheweath-er report.Press the soft key to return to thelastselectedchannel.

PA HAIL mode: PA HAIL mode allows the transceiver to be used as a power hailer when
anoptionalSTANDARDHORIZON220SW or 240SWHAIL/PAhorn isinstalled.ThePAHailmodehasa listen-back feature (GX2150 only)whichprovidestwowaycommunicationthroughtheHAIL/PAhorn.
FOG HORN mode: Automaticsignaling is transmitted through theHAIL/PAhorn.When the
foghorn,bellsorwhistlesignalisnotbeingoutputtedtheGX2150 listens backthroughtheconnectedPAhorn(GX2000doesnothavethelisten-backfeature).
