Scarfone/Hartley Gallery to Present “Growing Up in Neverland” Exhibit Featuring seven of the most renowned and provocative contemporary Cuban artists — many of whom will be on hand to lecture, teach and create — the University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will host the exhibit “Growing Up in Neverland” March 4 to 18. Seen as the seminal exhibit of pre- and post-Revolutionary Cuban artists, the exhibit is designed to reflect the everyday concerns that weigh upon the Cuban community, especially focusing on the problems Cuban society faces as it moves toward the future. The seven artists in the exhibition include Ernesto Leal, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Sandra Ramos, Lázaro Saavedra, Esterio Segura, José A. Vincench and the collective known as The Merger. Numerous mediums — including painting, sculpture, video, prints and installation — will be represented in the exhibit. David Horta, Pinar del Rio-based curator of the exhibit, said a central aim of the exhibit is to encourage dialog and promote cultural exchange through the sharing of knowledge of important Cuban artists and their work. “The artists in this exhibit have created vehicles for understanding the complexity of contemporary life and art in Cuba,” Horta said. “And the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery is an ideal setting for the kind of free and open discussions this exhibition is designed to stimulate.” Three highlights of the exhibit include: • Lázaro Saavedra, one of Cuba’s most respected living artists, will create a unique, large-format piece during the run of the exhibit. • Esterio Segura, whose work is included in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, produced a print in sculpture at the Graphicstudio at USF in 2006. His work is also under consideration for display at Tampa International Airport. • Pedro Pablo Oliva, who is noted internationally for his potently poetic (and often subtly political) imagery Additionally, Segura and Saavedra are two of four exhibition artists who are scheduled to be present during the exhibition’s run to participate in the accompanying lecture series, along with Horta. The Tampa Museum of Art will also screen two films and host a lunch-and-learn event with Horta after each screening. The schedule follows (all events in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery unless otherwise noted; schedule subject to change): • Thursday, March 10, Tampa Museum of Art, Time TBA: Cuban Film and Discussion by David Horta • Saturday, March 12, 7 p.m.: Grand Opening Reception (by invitation only; media welcome) • Monday, March 14, 7:30 p.m.: Inaugural presentation by David Horta to UT students, faculty and Tampa community about the exhibition and significance of participating artists • Tuesday, March 15, 7:30 p.m.: Gallery talk with Lázaro Saavedra • Wednesday, March 16, Tampa Museum of Art, Time TBA: Cuban Film and Discussion by David Horta • Wednesday, March 16, 7:30 p.m.: Gallery talk with Sandra Ramos • Thursday, March 17, noon: Gallery talk with José Vincench • Thursday, March 17, 7:30 p.m.: Gallery talk with Esterio Segura • Friday, March 18, 7 p.m.: Student closing reception For more information, visit www.ut.edu/scarfonehartleygallery. “Everyone should eat and drink and find enjoyment for all his hard work.” —Solomon “Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of hard work and chasing after the wind.” —Solomon

Featuring seven of the most renowned and provocative contemporary Cuban artists — many of whom will be on handto lecture, teach and create — the University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will host the exhibit “Growing Up inNeverland” March 4 to 18.

Seen as the seminal exhibit of pre- and post-Revolutionary Cuban artists, the exhibit is designed to reflect theeveryday concerns that weigh upon the Cuban community, especially focusing on the problems Cuban society faces asit moves toward the future. The seven artists in the exhibition include Ernesto Leal, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Sandra Ramos,Lázaro Saavedra, Esterio Segura, José A. Vincench and the collective known as The Merger. Numerous mediums —including painting, sculpture, video, prints and installation — will be represented in the exhibit. David Horta, Pinar delRio-based curator of the exhibit, said a central aim of the exhibit is to encourage dialog and promote cultural exchangethrough the sharing of knowledge of important Cuban artists and their work. “The artists in this exhibit have createdvehicles for understanding the complexity of contemporary life and art in Cuba,” Horta said. “And the Scarfone/HartleyGallery is an ideal setting for the kind of free and open discussions this exhibition is designed to stimulate.” Threehighlights of the exhibit include:

• Lázaro Saavedra, one of Cuba’s most respected living artists, will create a unique, large-format piece during the runof the exhibit.

• Esterio Segura, whose work is included in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art,produced a print in sculpture at the Graphicstudio at USF in 2006. His work is also under consideration fordisplay at Tampa International Airport.

• Pedro Pablo Oliva, who is noted internationally for his potently poetic (and often subtly political) imageryAdditionally, Segura and Saavedra are two of four exhibition artists who are scheduled to be present during theexhibition’s run to participate in the accompanying lecture series, along with Horta. The Tampa Museum of Art willalso screen two films and host a lunch-and-learn event with Horta after each screening.

The schedule follows (all events in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery unless otherwise noted; schedule subject to change):• Thursday, March 10, Tampa Museum of Art, Time TBA: Cuban Film and Discussion by David Horta• Saturday, March 12, 7 p.m.: Grand Opening Reception (by invitation only; media welcome)• Monday, March 14, 7:30 p.m.: Inaugural presentation by David Horta to UT students, faculty and Tampa

The “War of Words and Wit” Continues:FST Extends Butler Through March 5

Due to popular demand, Florida Studio Theatre announces the extension of its second Winter Mainstage show, Butler. Theproduction is now extended through March 5, 2016 in the Keating Theatre in Sarasota. Subscriptions for all three Mainstageshows can be purchased for as little as $45. Single tickets range from $36-$39. Tickets may be purchased online atFloridaStudioTheatre.org, by phone at (941) 366-9000, or by visiting the Box Office.

The critics have raved over Richard Strand’s Butler. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune says the show is “Vibrant, energetic”with a “Deep sense of humanity.” Sarasota Magazine calls it “A delight” with “Clever wordplay and comic escalations.”The Observer also weighs in describing it as “A war of words and wit” that is “Strikingly original.” Total Theater says“This play’s got everything.” Audiences agree calling it a, “Great show,” “Very entertaining,” and “Wonderful.”

This extension of Butler allows extra opportunity for audiences to see the production, but also the chance for the actorsto really get to know the characters they are portraying. Cast member Shane Taylor continues to discover an even deeperunderstanding of slave Shepard Mallory stating, “I think what sticks out most for me over this last month or so in regardto my character, is the idea that Shepard Mallory isn’t only fighting for his freedom and equality. The reason he has cometo ‘demand’ sanctuary at Fort Monroe is directly tied to the love he has for his wife. He does not want to be separated fromher, and is willing to risk everything to make sure that doesn’t happen. This desire to remain connected to her is whatpropels my entire journey through our play. In Shepard’s mind, it’s a love story.”

Fellow cast member playing the role of the man historically known as the Beast, Eric Hoffmann also explains hisevolution with General Butler. “After a month in this guy’s uniform and speaking Richard Strand’s words I’ve found afellow I really like — Smart, witty, acerbic, passionate, and driven. He’s got a mean streak and doesn’t suffer fools. He’salso playful and for all his principled behavior, still flawed in many ways.. The words lead me. I really enjoy playing himevery night. Audiences have been responding very vocally and seem to love finishing our lines for us. There are a few theyjoyfully see coming and are clearly engaged. And that’s part of the success of it as a play. It’s human and engaging andilluminates a fascinating moment in history in a very entertaining way.”

Exploring the play’s themes of race and equality, FST will once again be the center of a community-wide conversationwith the Dialogues on Diversity Series. With multiple panel discussions, an online forum, and several other communityevents throughout the run of the production, this community conversation is supported by over 25 community partners. Theonline forum is accessible at www.fst-blog.com.

Butler, a production of history, humor, and heart must close on March 5, 2016. Subscriptions for all three Mainstageshows can be purchased for as little as $45. Single tickets range from $36-$39. Subscriptions and single tickets may bepurchased online at FloridaStudioTheatre.org, by phone at (941) 366-9000 or by visiting the Box Office.
