About usMathematics, undoubtedly, the most ancient yet most intriguing ofall sciences ever developed by humans. Even in today's brutally

competitive world, where economies fall like stash of dominoes,mathematics retains its significance as a pre-requisite to beingsuccessful, be it in corporate world or financially ascetic but astutetechnocratic circles.At Maths 'N' Tech Club, we realize this requirement to exposure to

analytical reasoning and lateral thinking by organizing a multitude ofevents that flame the spark of interest in adventurous souls studyingengineering at NIT Durgapur.Established in 2004, the Maths 'N' Tech Club was initially conceivedwith the idea of providing a stage for instilling in students a passion for

mathematics by underlining its merit and applicability throughplethora brainy challenges. Due to the uniqueness of the ground wecover, and undaunted support of our outstanding faculty, Maths 'N'Tech Club has grown magnificently over the years, the evidence towhich can be felt in grand culmination of Ank '09, knowledge fest ofNIT Durgapur, organized by Maths 'N' Tech Club, and also the secondedition of technical magazine Anveshan coming out in print,generating appreciative reviews by a number of national institutions inthe field, providing the club - a national recognition.We pride ourselves in the fact that, of all activities happening

on-campus, the events by Maths 'N' Tech Club invariably attractheaviest of the crowds, thanks to the audacious adventure-seekingnature haracteristic of the engineering students.

Our MottoAll events conducted at Maths 'N' Tech Club are products of great

innovation and Team Work. It projects a great success on the part ofthe Club. The members who join this club are selected through a toughMathematics aptitude test and IQ test as well as a personal interview.The events leave a strong imprint on the minds of the students

inspiring them to think laterally and apply what they already know. Ourevents have always managed to gather the most intelligent brains ofour college who indulge in an intense battle to win the 'final round' ofeach of our events.

Anveshan is the Technical Magazine of NIT Durgapur that is published everyyear in the month of March.

About ANKAnk, a novel attempt by Maths 'N' Tech Club to conduct a Knowledgefest at NIT Durgapur, evolved out of a whim of the organizers to tease

the gray cells of NIT-D students and to establish once and for all thatmathematics is fun. The intent is to infuse some frivolity in the largelymundane odd-semester, and feed the want of knowledge in a grosslycompetitive premise, where students can come to enhance aptitudeand gain skills while having a gala time of it all. Ank 2kX hasconsequently been conceptualized with events precisely engineeredto this effect.At Ank 2kX, a host of events like Kryptic, Simplex, Constructo, Who's

Next?? & Tech-Know emphasized skill and broadened the horizons ofunderstanding of the youth. While entirely "Maths-is-Fun" partincluded veritably innovative events like Maths, Maze 'N' Masti,Terrorist Takedown, and QuizTune. A final event Clash Of the Titanssaw the battle of the finalists of all the major events held at Ank 2kX.Also included were events like Picturesque (a Photoshop Designingevent) and Images and Words (an Online Quiz) which were conductedonline and saw huge participation.Alongside, a host of filler events were thrown in to keep the

participants engaged while result compilation and such activities goon.In pre-Ank phase, other than Picturesque and Images and Words, wehad an intra-hall promotional event Knock-Knock, exclusively for therecently admitted first year students. Also, two educational workshopsEthical Hacking and Photoshop Designing were held, for which theinstructors came from Kyrion Digital Securities, Delhi andDesignSkillSet.Com, Bangalore respectively.In consequence of all this dedicated effort, Ank 2kX was a major

success, in terms of participation as well as response, a justifiablystrong debut on part of Maths 'N' Tech Club. Now, we again ventureforward with a bolstered spirit, an unending enthusiasm with goals atthe horizon to attain - to make a resplendently exalting and energizedquest of knowledge out of Ank '11.

Online events like the Online Puzzle Championship and Picturesque are also organisedto take the competition down to the hostel rooms.

got together to design an event formusic enthusiasts coupling a littletechnical things or two as well. And inthe endeavor, Quiz Tune drew largecrowds to the arena.

Knock KnockThis was a regular intra-hall promotional event, exclusively for therecently admitted first year students. Every weekend, a set of puzzles

is posted on Hostel Notice Board and the entries are collected in aDrop Box installed on the premises. After three weeks, a winner isdeclared based on cumulative best score.

Maths Maze n MastiMany of us are addicted to watching movies, while some would

rather wreck our brains at puzzles.Maths 'N' Tech Club brought together the best of both worlds and

much more in the inaugural event of ANK 2kX. The event comprised offour rounds and the cumulative score of the rounds decided thewinner. There were no eliminations until final round.Rounds included exciting quests like Cocktail where each question is

a mixture of two different problems, Haadsa - a search for correct pathin the aftermath of a plane crash, leT USsEE- an ultimate test of eyesand ears co-ordination, and your ability to comprehend what is seenwith what is heard, and Lo-Geek - a test of your rational thinking andyour ability to make sense of obscure data amid some perplexingpuzzles, specially handpicked for the participants.

Terrorist TakedownYet another attack on NIT Durgapur! Bringing a chance for the

chosen ones to be the SUPERheroes for the college, the life saviors:The NAYAK's.This time the target is your friend the only weapon with you is your

'GREY MATTER'. So let the adrenalin rush and evoke the persistentYOU as you have to decrypt the codes and hints left by theperpetrators of this act, to finally be the rescuer.As all this required was a technical edge, innovative streak - the tiger

shakti and not to forget team strategy to use the allotted resources tothe maximum, keeping in mind that time is running out ... tick tocktick ... And as we promise, it delivered one hell of a terrific time.Participants per team: 5

SimplexIt's not philosophy that gets executed in the CPU, it's mathematics.And if you put n layers of abstractions above the CPU, the n-th layer

will still have a form of mathematics in it, and the interface to the n-1layers is still maths.Simplex is an on-site programming event which is more than simply

maths at one end or algorithmic programming at the other. Here youhave to put your mathematical abilities as well as computationalthinking at stake. Though various programming methodologies mightlead you to the correct solution but a slight mathematical approachcan make your solution quicker and elegant.Prelims had multiple choice questions based on maths andcomputational thinking etc. and 15 teams were selected based on

their performance for the main event. Next round was a 3-hour codingevent consisting of two phases. In each phase each team were given aset of problems (having a score associated with them) with examplesfor elucidations. Participants were to maximize your cumulative scoreby solving as many problems as they could.

you but it is an event created to test your code cracking abilities. Anevent which requires no previous knowledge other than yourpresence of mind and quick wits.After preliminary elimination, the real stuff began. Round 1

consisted of a buzzer based Decryption process. In next round, anencrypted message was given with half an hour to decode. Fornon-programmers, choice was given to Google for a secret key thatthey can use to decrypt the code.The last and the best of all the rounds delved into the realms of

cryptography.The event enjoyed an appreciable participation.

This Ank, gear up for the ultimate battle, as the fiercest and the best of thewarriors lock horns to prove their absolute supremacy.

RoboticsThis is a robot making contest

consisting of both mechanicaland autonomous robots. Thiswill held by the SAE club of thecollege, a part of SAE India,during ANK '11.

MockCATThis is a CAT assessment test

organised by TestFunda at NITDurgapur in association with Maths 'N'Tech Club. The purpose of the test wasto give aspiring students a fi rst handexperience of an online CATexamination in accordance with thelatest pattern of this test.The tests were conducted at

Computer Centre, NIT Durgapur.

NumbolaA fun fair based on frivolous affair

called Thumbola with a hint ofmathematics put in it. But the prizesare real! Solve the question, and whatyou get is what you mark. First to thefinish goes winner!

Hour G lass1 hour time, in which the students are surrounded by an engrossingbundle of 10, Algebra, Geometry and tricky mathematical calculations.

This is the first event held every academic year with objective ofmaking the Freshers involved in the run.

M ed ia Cryp tex BoothMaths 'N' Tech Club, NIT Durgapur in association with Linux Users'

Group, conducted another edition of the annual event Media CryptexBooth at Mukti 11.02MCB commences right away by striking a fine 'chemistry' with the

students. You will have to sift through the scores of elements in theperiodic table to make just the right picks. This was followed byanother brainstorming session where it was required to decipher thehidden thoughts of a dream, now on the path to oblivion. MCB woundoff with a different taste as one got to play with a few images andcrosswords in the final round of the prelims.The selected teams meet for the ultimate crash the following day

(Saturday). For all the people who are not the ultimate computer geek,here's your chance to grab the limelight in Mukti and load yourpockets - Media Cryptex Booth.

War of the BranchesMaths 'N' Tech Club believes in continuing a traditional set of

events which involves War of The Branches. Initially this eventstarted years back in the form of War of the Zones and thenconverted into the present version.This is the last event held in an academic year and invites a good

amount of participation from the final year students who try theirmettle for the last time in their college.

Online Puzzle Championship is an onl ine event in which puzzle solving is taken to the nextlevel, where you need to be in your best of ability to win!

DarwiniaDarwinia is the biggest regular annual event conducted by Maths 'N'Tech Club in the academic year. It is a theme based event generally

having an adapted scenario of Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest.This year, Darwinia was a political career based event.Darwinia is generally held in the month of February or March,

during the techno-management fest, Aarohan, of the college. Thisevent not only involves the participation of on-campus students, butalso students from allover the nation who come to be a part ofAarohan, particpate in this event.

Paper p resenta tionThis event satisfies the technical aspect of the club. It is a technical

paper presentation certified by the IEEE, in which innovation,creativity and talent of young engineering minds are on display. Its alink between mankind and technology.

WorkshopsE th ical H acking Wo rksh opA successful 2-day workshop conducted in association with Kyrion

Digital Securities. It was attended by over 120 students from theinstitute and 30 outstation participants. Students attending theworkshop were provided with a collection of softwares and studymaterials to master in the professional field of Ethical Hacking.Photoshop D esign S killsA 2-day workshop aiming at making the participants proficient in

basic and advanced Photoshop Designing skills was organised by theMaths 'N' Tech Club. This was mainly targeted at increasing thecreativity and talent of the students in the field of digital design.

Virtual Share Bazaar: Thisevent simulates the real timestock exchange with a lot ofvirtual money and stocks. Thisis to test the financialmanagement skills of theengineering students.

internet, more specifically the socialnetworking sites it has become a loteasier to be in touch with the people.Maths 'N' Tech Club has its own groupon Facebook which is updatedregularly with the current happeningsin the club. In the past academicsession this group was also used as amedium to host online quizingcompetitions. Many hints to toughproblems and their solutions are alsoposted up in the group. The group hasalso provided a wonderful medium offeedback for our followers.
