• The standard unit for weight in the metric system is the gram. – Example: a paper clip equals about 1 gram

• Heavier weights are measured in kilograms– Example: a dictionary equals 1 kilogram

• Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains

• Weight is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls downwards.

• When scales show "kg" or "lb" it is just an estimate of the mass above them

Weight vs. Mass

• If you went to the moon and weighed yourself, would you weigh more or less than you do on Earth?Less

• Why?Gravity is weaker on the moon than it is on Earth. Weight is how hard gravity is pulling on it. Mass only changes if you remove something.
