Target/Objective: I can convert between metric and customary units
of mass and weight.
Math Message
Table Leaders: Get SRBs for your tableLet’s read pg. 140 together
Unit 11: Vocabulary & Notes
• The standard unit for weight in the metric system is the gram. – Example: a paper clip equals about 1 gram
• Heavier weights are measured in kilograms– Example: a dictionary equals 1 kilogram
Notes Cont’d
• The standard units for weight in the U.S. customary system are the ounce (oz) and the pound (lb). Heavier weights are measured in pounds.– Example: 1 oz equals a slice of bread– Example: 1 lb equals a can of soda
Metric Units
1 gram = 1,000 milligrams1 kilogram = 1,000 grams1 ton = 1,000 kilograms
U.S. Customary Units
1 pound = 16 ounces1 ton = 2,000 pounds
Equivalencies between Metric & U.S.
1 ounce = 28 gram1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds
Metric QuestionsWhat might be measured in…• Milligrams?– Medicine
• Grams?– Food
• Kilograms?– Body weight
• Metric Ton?– A whale &/or a dump truck
Unit 11: Vocabulary & Notes
• Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains
• Weight is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls downwards.
• When scales show "kg" or "lb" it is just an estimate of the mass above them
Weight vs. Mass
• If you went to the moon and weighed yourself, would you weigh more or less than you do on Earth?Less
• Why?Gravity is weaker on the moon than it is on Earth. Weight is how hard gravity is pulling on it. Mass only changes if you remove something.
