Baird Middle School 8th Grade Summer Homework Packet 2015-2016
Math
Your homework over the summer is to practice your math facts five times a week (Monday-Friday) for 15 minutes. After you have practiced your math facts, you will be taking an online test. You can practice your math facts by using the following two pages attached. You will only have 3 minutes to complete 100 problems.
How to take an online test
-Use method 1 if you have not created an account on schoology.
Go to www.schoology.com
Click on sign up
Click student
Enter access code: B5R82-MBF96
Fill in information in order to create an account
Use FUSD email username and password to create account
Once you have created an account you should be able to access all online tests
Course should be named 8th Grade Math Facts
- Use method 2 if you already have an account on schoology
Go to www.schoology.com
Click on log in
Enter FUSD email username and password
Click Courses
Click join
Enter access code: B5R82-MBF96
Once you have logged into your account you should be able to access all tests
Course should be named 8th Grade Math Facts
Addition tests will be available from June 15- June 26 Multiplication tests will be available from June 29 – July 10 Division tests will be available July 13 – July 24 Subtraction tests will be available July 27 – Aug 7
We will focus on one operation at a time. You have to take a test online at least once a day, but you are welcomed to take a test as many times as you would like in order to improve your score.
The goal is to improve your initial score by the end of each two-week period. When you return back to school, you will be tested on your math facts weekly.

Hello Incoming 8th Graders,
I’m really looking forward to teaching you next year in 8th grade English. We will start right away by analyzing your summer reading novel, either Touching Spirit Bear or The Pearl. Take your time reading the book and doing the homework, but make sure it’s done by the first day of school!

Students not attending Summer School for ELA
1. Read the novel Touching Spirit Bear or The Pearl. 2. As you read, take Focused Cornell Notes on the Literary Elements: setting, plot,
conflict, character, and theme. Be sure to finish your notes with good questions and a summary. Notes should be minimum of 2 pages. Notes will be collected and graded the first week of school.
3. Go online to www.schoology.com* and join the “8th Grade ELA Summer HW” class (Access code ZC7BF-2MJV4) Choose the correct quiz and answer the 5 questions. (you will only be taking one of the quizzes) You may use your notes on the quiz. The quiz will be graded on both the quality of answer and on grammar. Take your time and do a good job.
*Use directions from math to log on to Schoology if you are not sure how to do so.
Students attending Summer School for ELA
Bring your Touching Spirit Bear book to your first class. Your summer school teacher will take it from there.
U.S. History
Visit www.schoology.com and use the access code GGDTB-6XKV4 to join Mr. Wilkins
course called “Baird 8 Summer History”. After joining the course you will see two articles. Download and read the two articles. You may print them if you would like to annotate them by hand. After reading the articles, complete the schoology activity titled “Summer HW #1”. This assignment should be complete before the first day of school.
Science
Visit www.schoology.com and use the access code 7WQFN-8Z7JT to join Mrs.
Wimer’s course called “Science Summer Homework”. After joining the course you will see an article titled “Newton’s Laws and Roller Coasters”. Download the article. You may print it if you would like to annotate it by hand. After reading the article, take the schoology quiz titled “Roller Coaster Physics”. This assignment should be completed before the first day of school.
