GLCEs
The state of Michigan outlines Grade Level Content Expectations (commonly called GLCEs)
GLCEs govern curriculum in elementary and middle schools
Huron Valley Schools
At a district level, Huron Valley Schools has taken GLCEs and created curriculum for grades K-8
Huron Valley Schools also created pacing guides for all subject areas that ensure teachers cover GLCEs consistently
HVS Math Department
To ensure that the GLCEs are met successfully, departments have their own set of assessments
The math department uses assessments throughout the school year to monitor student achievement
HVS Math Assessments
The math department created assessments to correspond with the Connected Mathematics Series (mini-textbooks)
MEAP data (all grades) EXPLORE data (8th grade)
HVS Math Data
All data collected by HVS is stored by Pearson and can be accessed by all teachers and administrators
Data governs PLCs, Professional Development, Cohort Groups, School Improvement Plans
Noteworthy WLMS Gaps
10% of 6th grade students have not mastered GLCEs
21% of all students have not mastered GLCEs
EXPLORE data shows 38% of 8th graders test below national average
Specific WLMS Deficiencies
6th Grade:– Multiplying and Dividing Fractions– Solving Equations
Specific WLMS Deficiencies
7th Grade:– Solving Proportions– Representing Linear Functions– Computing with Rational Numbers
Specific WLMS Deficiencies
8th Grade:– Pre-algebra– Algebraic Concepts
*Our findings show that the 8th graders struggle with concepts that build off the concepts 6th and 7th graders struggle with
Ideas for Improvement in Math Scores
Model-Building Approach Multiple Models Integrated Technology Cross Curricular
PD Recommendation
White Lake Middle’s School Improvement Plan calls for mathematics lessons to be taught in every classroom
We are recommending devoting more PD time to bringing the cross-curricular mathematics instruction to WLMS– Four stages
Stage 1- Literature Study
As part of SSR, teachers will be required to read articles regarding cross-curricular mathematics instruction
First article: “Supporting Mathematics in Other Subject Areas” by Sheryl Stump, Susan E. Clark, Melissa Mitchell, and Kay Roebuck
More literature will be selected throughout year
Stage 2- Whole Staff Meeting
At a staff meeting…– Discuss article using conversation tools from
Yendol-Hoppe, Dana book– Review mathematics obligations of SIP– Teacher questions, concerns
Stage 3- Department Meetings
Each department will collaborate to incorporate math into lessons
Math department will divide and aid in collaboration
Stage 4- Team Meetings
Teams meet informally daily Team collaboration on cross-curricular
mathematics lessons should be part of informal meetings
Ask teams to report back at staff meetings about lesson successes and obstacles
