View from the Director's BoxWhat a terrific performance from everyone last weekend in bitingconditions at one of the higher placed teams. With several regularfirst choice players missing, then the withdrawal of the experiencedAbel and Dani, it was delight and credit to a mainly youthful outfitwho battled out the draw.

There is immense talent within the town which is beingincorporated into the football club. In recent years we have losttalent such as Belima and Damian Aguero, which we intend toremedy with a more concentrated policy that binds theseexceptional young players to FC Torrevieja, ensuring they receiveprofessional coaching, first team opportunities and then the clubbenefits when they move on.

It augurs well for next term that the likes of Sergio, Patri and Matiashave amply demonstrated their capability of holding their own insenior company. And there are more to come. But first of coursewe must ensure our Tercera survival. At only four points off thedrop zone we are in dangerous territory.

This season, group six is weaker than usual. Last term bothCatarroja and Levante B wracked up 92 points (albeit playing 2games more than teams will this season). It will surprise me if thetop two this time round break the 80 mark. Four of the fiverelegated teams from last season finished with 29 points or less -already attained by the bottom five as the table currently stands!

We need at least four more wins from our remaining 14 fixtures tosee us continue in this tier. Here's to one of those vital wins today.

The wind threatened to blow the posts down on Saturday as Torryshivered up a mountain top seeking points against high flyingSaguntino. This match may not have had the feral rawness of the1962 World Cup encounter between Chile and Italy, known as theBattle as Santiago, but was brutal enough, with Abel scythed downand off injured in the first half and tackles flying in willy nilly as thepartisan Saguntino fans screamed for a winner.Torry had the fierce wind at their backs in this inhospitablewilderness in the first period and made the most of the advantage.Gasch surged down the left flank in the second minute, cutting theball back for Jose Manuel who over reached when blazing high.Without regulars Koeman, Burguillos, Juanfran and of courseErnesto, this Torry line up was choc full of youth. When ManuAmores replaced Abel and Sergio deputised for Dani, it looked ateam for the future, but one rife with talent and desire.Jose Manuel was returning from injury and led the line with gusto, whilst reinstated captain Jorge dominated at the back inindomitable style. However, it was he who fell victim to the swirlingwind, losing the flight of the ball and allowing Borja Mir a one onone with Tur. The young keeper was fast off his line and extendedhis body bravely, deservedly blocking the shot with his legs.Tur's punching was also solid and authoritative as he was calledinto action from several corners and free kicks but it was Torry whotook an unexpected lead in the 17th minute. Dani was felled whilston the rampage and took the free kick himself, finding his captain'shead. Jorge muscled himself into pole position and glided the ballinto the far corner of the net. Torry began to get a grip on the gameand it was a surprise when the hosts equalised in time added on atthe end of the first period.A free kick award to the hosts 25 yards directly in front of goalprovided the injury time leveller. The ball was struck cleanly andTur did well to push it on to the bar. It fell but a foot from the lineand Fran Giménez was the first to react, getting his body to the balland forcing it over the line as Tur attempted to retrieve it. It was a

body blow to the Salineros, who are beginning to make a bad habitof conceding goals in time added on.Sergio replaced Dani Meseguer at the start of the second half, thusreducing experienced Torry personnel to a minimum and for thefirst fifteen minutes were put under maximum pressure. Tur wascalled into action time after time, but on each occasion he was upto the task. Torry relied on fast breaks but Villanueva was notgetting the service he needed and struggled to trouble the target.Cuco Ros and Manu Amores were working tirelessly, but Saguntinowere in full control of the midfield and raided the Torry goal timeafter time. However, Boix, Rafa and Sergio all raised their game to join Jorgeas being impenetrable. Jorge even found time to go raiding.Gathering the ball deep in his own half, he surged forward, accelerating past opponents with power before it fizzed out at hereached the penalty box. Saguntino were frustrated but pressed forthe winner. Torry worked hard to keep them at bay and in the finalanalysis, thoroughly deserved their point.Torry are now unbeaten in their last three matches but other resultsdemonstrated that they are far from safe. The remaining third of theseason will prove tense and difficult. Here's hoping the unbeatenrun can continueagainst Villareal Ctoday.

Six draws, a mere 16 goals and two bottomfour teams winning made it clear that in groupsix this season, any team is as good as anyother and nothing is guaranteed.Crevillente lifted themselves off the bottom, but still stay just one offthat spot with a 2-1 win at third place Castellon. The hosts took thelead but Carrasco levelled from the penalty spot before the interval, then Aleo won the points on 62 minutes. Eldense did just as wellwith a home success over 2nd placed Elche Ilicitano, Alex Pascualgrabbing the vital only goal.Denia continue to battle for scraps with a goalless home draw withJove whilst struggling Llosa did well to find an equaliser at Alziraafter William had given the hosts a 12th minute lead. Alzira fall tofifth, replaced in the top four by La Nucia who secured all threepoints at the Camilo Cano against Muro courtesy of a second halfJuan Fran strike.Gandia were the only other victors at the weekend pleasing homefans with a 2-1 success over Acero. Gandia leapfrog Acero in to11th place on 36 points. Catarroja return to the bottom of the piledespite a draw with Borriol. Granero put them ahead on 58, butEixea continued Borriol's great 2013 sequence with a strike with aquarter of an hour left on the clock. Borriol are unbeaten sincebefore Christmas.Utiel and Burriana both failed to find the net and five pointscontinues to keep them apart in 8th and 15th places respectively.League leaders Novelda struck first at Villareal when Gomis nettedafter 20 minutes. The yellow submarine equalised on 37 throughIvan Aguro and with no further score, it finished 1-1, Novelda sixpoints clear at the top on 51 and Villareal in sixth place on 42. Nomatch for Ribarroba who tumble into the bottom four on goaldifference.

Villarreal CFToday's Visitors Villarreal CFVillarreal celebrate their 90th anniversary next Sunday, beingformed on 10 March 1923. They have three teams in the nationaldivisions, with their current first team in the Segunda, though witha rich history that saw themChampions league semi finalists (losingto Arsenal) in 2006.

The team that plays in the Tercera division is their third team -Villarreal C - and is usually full of exceptionally talented youngplayers, all hoping they will progress through the ranks to first teamfootball. They are based close to Castellon and these games take onan added significance.

Division three history between FC Torrevieja and Villarreal C hasbeen dominated by the visitors, with last season's 2-1 Torry win ourfirst and served up courtesy of an injury time winner from Juande. This term Torry drew 1-1 at Villarreal, with Gasch getting theleveller with less than ten minutes on the clock.

It has been a frustrating seasonfor Villarreal, defeating all thetop teams, but losing tomanyofthe lesser lights. Hence theyoccupy 6th spot, scoring 2morethan Torry and conceding onemore that Torry. Midfield sidesAcero and Burriana havenotched 4 and 3 goalsrespectively against themlanding their heaviest defeatsthis term, whilst strugglersCatarroja and Llosa haveenjoyed shut outs. Who knowshow today's contest will go!Let's just hope for a good game- and a Torry win!

According to Marca.com, the venue for the Copa del Rey final is onceagain keeping the finalists' fans guessing. Both Madrid teams won theright to play in the most special match on the calendar and possiblestadiums are beginning to be suggested with a view to hosting the clashwhich is provisionally scheduled for the 18th May. It's the only Final playedin the Spanish top flight which is decided on a nuteral ground,The 'Blancos' are yet to make any official comment on the subject butBarcelona and Valencia are the favourites. The president of theFederación de Peñas del Real Madrid (Real Madrid Supporters Club),Alejandro Lora, said as much to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope: "Wewant a ground that is neutral. We like Mestalla as it is close by andbecause they look after us there, but Camp Nou is in with a chance, it's anoption which can't be ruled out because of its capacity".What is clear is that Real Madrid seems to feel comfortable of late in the'Azulgrana' domain. The players, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, would prefer alarger ground where they can develop their game and Camp Nou is idealfor that. A meeting will be held in the next few days between the finalistsand the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to set the date and venue. Asis customary, the official body is waiting to collect the various proposalstogether. In the event that the teams do not reach an agreement, it will befor the RFEF to decide which city will host the final.

Xabi Alonso: "Tiki-taka isn't our style"The Real Madrid anchormanwas full of praise for the 'LosBlancos' attack, claiming "wehave players who are on anotherlevel compared to my previousclubs".Speaking to UEFA's 'Champions'magazine, Xabi Alonsocontrasted the differencesbetween the footballingphilosophy at Real Madrid andBarcelona respectively. "Tiki-taka isn't our style. We have aclear aim, which is to get into theopposition box as quickly as

possible". The midfielder also looked forward to the upcoming clash withManchester United at Old Trafford, a ground he graced on severaloccasions when he plied his trade for Liverpool. "From the fans' point ofview and because of the history of both clubs, this meeting is purefootball. Winning the club's 10th European Cup mustn't become anobsession, because that doesn't help, but it is a major target".The Real Madrid anchorman was full of praise for the 'Los Blancos'attack, claiming "we have players who are on another level compared tomy previous clubs. Our forwards can create chances at any givenmoment". Alonso believes his own form is a reflection of the team as awhole: "My performances always depend on the team. That's what reallymatters to me: the team. When I see things that can be improved, thatmeans I have room for improvement, too".The silky midfielder hailed José Mourinho's "ability to empathise with hisplayers, which is no mean feat. When you see that a group is behind youand believes in the ideas you're trying to get across...that's what being aleader means. And our coach is just that. In my opinion, he's one of thebest in the world". "Leaving aside his knowledge of football, he has anamazing grasp of a variety of tactical approaches, which he sometimesuses even within the same game", Alonso concluded, after lauding thePortuguese tactician for showing his players "how to psyche yourself upfor every single match".

Bobby Moore TributeEnglandʼs 1966 World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore died 20years ago on February 24, 1993 aged just 51 following a battleagainst bowel cancer.

Here, we take a look atwhat some of the gameʼsleading figures said aboutthe Bobby Moore, theplayer and the man.

England World Cupwinning manager Sir AlfRamsey: “My captain, myleader, my right-handman. He was the spirit andthe heartbeat of the team.A cool, calculating

footballer I could trust with my life. He was the supreme professional, thebest I ever worked with. Without him England would never have won theWorld Cup.”Brazilian Pele, regarded as the best player of all time: “Bobby was one ofthe worldʼs finest defenders and a great gentleman. The shirt he woreagainst me in that 1970 World Cup match is my prize possession.”Fellow England World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton: “Bobby Moore hadclass and great talent as a defender. He could sense where trouble wascoming from and nullify it immediately and his distribution then wassuperb. His greatest asset was his influence on his team-mates and theconfidence he gave them while at the same time demoralising hisopponents. A real captain whose success and demeanour put him in theall-time great category and he was a pleasure to be with for so long. Hisstatue at Wembley is a symbol of our greatest man and will be thereforever.”German legend Franz Beckenbauer, part of the 1966 team defeated atWembley: “Bobby was my football idol. I looked up to him. I was so proudto have played against him.”

Page 27: Matchday_march_3_2013

27

Former England and WestHam forward Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in theWorld Cup final: “BobbyMoore was a great player, agreat leader and a greatfriend. He was loved andrespected by all who playedwith him and by all whowatched him perform.”Current England manager RoyHodgson: “In recent yearspeople have been honouredfor winning the World Cup,and it is unfortunate Bobbydied so young and was notknighted for it.”Former England captain DavidBeckham said: “Bobby Mooreis a legend. He is real hero ofmine and a great example to

every professional footballer.”Football Association director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking, and former team-mate at West Ham: “Bobbyʼs contribution to football andhistory has sadly only been recognised after his premature death. He wasan astonishing footballer, but also a great man and an importantfootballing friend to me in my early days.”QPR manager and friend Harry Redknapp: “Can you tell me why hehasnʼt got a knighthood? Why wasnʼt Bobby Moore Sir Bobby Moore? Nodisrespect, but there are a lot of footballers who couldnʼt lace his boots, ordone as much in the game as he had, who get all kinds of accoladesbestowed on them. Thereʼs never been a nicer man or classier man onand off the field to ever grace the game.”Jeff Powell, award winning sports reporter and one of Mooreʼs closestfriends, wrote the inscription on the Wembley statue: “Immaculatefootballer. Imperial defender. Immortal hero of 1966. First Englishman toraise the World Cup aloft. Favourite son of Londonʼs East End. Finestlegend of West Ham United. National Treasure. Master of Wembley. Lordof the game. Captain extraordinary. Gentleman of all time.”

Champion's League Preview Man Utd v Real Madrid

Last Sunday saw Swansea dominate a courageous Bradford and run out 5-0victors. That makes it two out of two for this column with both selections winningat odds against. The next big sporting event is Tuesday's Champions League 2ndleg match at Old Trafford where Alex Ferguson goes head to head with his old foeJose Mourinho.

The first leg ended in a stalemate. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring only to seehis effort cancelled out by former red Cristiano Ronaldo. Nonetheless it was agood result for United as many a pundit expected them to struggle in theBernabau. Just how important that away goal turns out to be remains to be seen.

Mourinho first came up against Ferguson in 2004 and who will forget him runningdown the touchline at Old Trafford as Porto found an equaliser eliminating TheRed Devils from the competition on aggregate. All in all the two great managershave met 12 times and there is no doubt who has his head in front. Mourinho has6 wins to Ferguson's 1. There have been 5 draws. Quite remarkable when oneconsiders the dominance of Manchester United for so long, nobody else has everor likely will ever get close to bettering Fergie so often.

Looking ahead to Tuesday and the line-ups will be interesting, it was a surprise tosee Ferguson play such an attacking formation in the Bernabau choosing to startwith Van Persie, Rooney and Welbeck and I'm not so certain he will be thatadventurous this time around.

Nonetheless with the attacking quality the teams have we have the right to expectgoals, but like us the bookmakers expect them also quoting only 1/2 for bothteams to net inside the 90 minutes. Likewise over 2.5 goals is as short as 4/7 sowe won't be able to make hay there. One area that I think has beenunderestimated by the betting companies is the "To Qualify" market. This meanswhich team will go through to the next round regardless of whether the matchgoes to extra time or penalties.

With an away goal in the bag I would tend to favour Manchester United or at thevery least make it a 50/50 chance. The bookmakers are sticking with the La Ligaoutfit and make them generally 8/11 favourites to go through. This means we canget odds against for Manchester united to progress and I think that's a good price.Old Trafford will be buzzing, expectation will be high. The players will be totallyfocussed with the league title virtually sewn up so they can attack this 100%.Ferguson would love to get only his second victory against Mourinho and he'll doeverything he can to succeed.

Take the 11/10 for The Reds to progress it is as short as 10/11 with some of theUK bookmakers. Three out of three would be nice.
