Massachusetts  Cultural  Council  10  St.  James  Avenue,  3rd  Floor    Boston,  MA  02116

July  1st,  2014    To  Whom  It  May  Concern:    I  am  writing  to  express  my  interest  in  the  Creative  Youth  Development  Program  Officer  position  at  the  Massachusetts  Cultural  Council.  I  am  passionate  about  the  benefits  of  teaching  empathy,  confidence  and  creative  expression  through  the  arts.  I  have  experience  developing,  teaching,  evaluating  and  administrating  arts  programs  for  youth  of  all  ages,  and  would  love  to  continue  my  career  supporting  arts  education  with  the  Massachusetts  Cultural  Council.

I  moved  to  the  East  Coast  to  pursue  a  graduate  degree  in  Public  Humanities  at  Brown,  and  dove  right  into  the  community  arts  scene.  While  at  Brown,  I  developed  the  skills  to  research  and  advocate  for  the  importance  of  the  arts.  I  honed  my  craft  as  a  writer  and  storyteller  with  coursework  in  exhibit  development  and  digital  storytelling.  I  developed  experience  in  creating  evaluations,  gathering  benchmarking  information  for  strategic  plans,  and  worked  with  community  partners  to  develop  exhibits.  These  experiences  partnered  me  with  the  Rhode  Island  Council  for  Humanities,  The  RISD  Museum,  New  Urban  Arts,  and  the  Vartan  Gregorian  Elementary  School  in  Foxpoint.

Out  of  all  of  my  experiences,  I  am  most  interested  in  pursuing  a  career  in  community  arts  because  these  organizations  center  their  missions  around  relationships.  I  value  connections  with  other  people  and  I  thrive  in  a  collaborative  work  environment.  With  opportunities  for  access  to  the  arts  threatening  to  close  off  in  school  systems  and  civic  spaces,  it  is  crucial  that  we  develop  art-‐centered  spaces  that  offer  public  arts  education.  I  have  spent  the  past  few  years  researching  how  arts  make  intellectual,  social  and  emotional  impact  on  creative  participants.           I  believe  I  am  a  strong  candidate  for  the  position  because  of  my  experience  working  with  informal  arts  education  with  children  and  families,  my  skills  as  a  writer  and  storyteller,  and  my  coursework  and  experience  in  managing  cultural  institutions.  I  believe  that  arts  education  is  life  changing.  I  would  love  to  continue  working  with  youth  by  supporting  the  Massachusetts  Cultural  Council  in  the  Creative  Youth  Development  Program  Officer  role.  Thank  you  for  your  consideration.      Warm  wishes,  Josiah  Carberry
