• First-Class FacilitiesThe Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIoC) providesclinical training for final year student clinicians tomeet the degree requirements. The WIoC contains20 treatment rooms, a digital X-ray suite, MRIfacilities and a functional rehabilitation suite toprovide a stimulating learning environment for ourstudents. At the University we have a number offirst-class learning facilities on-site, including clinicalsimulation and a diagnostic ultrasound suite.

• Fully Integrated ProgrammeOur chiropractic degree is the only programme inthe UK that is fully integrated into the Universityinfrastructure, offering students a wide educationalexperience.

• Student ActivitiesWithin the academic framework, students areencouraged to interact with members of thechiropractic profession. Most chiropracticassociations within the UK offer studentmembership and a range of conferences. Ourstudents are also invited to join the BritishChiropractic Sports Council team to providehealthcare at various sporting events. We have ourown Chiropractic Society supported by theUniversity’s Students’ Union. The Society has its ownbook club, a range of branded clothing and hostsmany social events, including the annualChiropractic Ball. The Chiropractic Society also holdsregular meetings, with guest speakers from a diverseand interesting range of professional backgrounds.

Chiropractic is a growing professionwith many rewards. Chiropracticfocuses on a manual, hands-onapproach to treating the neuro-musculoskeletal system and theeffects that disorders of this areamay have on general health.

In light of increasing demands for chiropracticservices we were the first university in the UK to offer a fully integrated undergraduate degree that is accredited by the General Chiropractic Council(GCC). Our students benefit from opportunities suchas clinical placement with the local health board,which improve their confidence and employability.

You will enjoy state-of-the-art equipment in ourpurpose-built clinic at the Welsh Institute ofChiropractic (WIoC) on the Treforest campus. Wehave excellent working relationships with thechiropractic profession, and enjoy close links withthe British Chiropractic Association and the RoyalCollege of Chiropractors, as well as many otherinternational chiropractic organisations, includingthe European Chiropractors Union and the WorldFederation of Chiropractic.

Prospective students who do not have the requiredbasic science subjects, but who have demonstratedacademic ability or qualifications in another field,may apply to enter the Pre-Chiropractic FoundationYear.

This course is ideal for applicants who are making acareer change or a transfer from another area ofstudy. In addition, students who have studiedscience but do not have high enough marks toqualify for the degree are encouraged to apply tothe Foundation programme as a route of entry tothe MChiro degree programme.

About the CourseOur four year, full-time integrated Master ofChiropractic (MChiro) degree is designed to equipyou with an advanced knowledge of humanstructure and its relationship to general health.

The course aims to produce caring and competentchiropractors who are capable of practisingindependently and safely. It develops imaginative,evaluative and responsive intellectual skills, andembraces a range of relevant theories, firmly linkedto clinical practice.

The award of Master of Chiropractic (MChiro)provides the scientific knowledge and basic clinicalmethodology required for pre-registrationeducation and training. You will study andunderstand the human body in health and disease,identify abnormalities of human structure andfunction, together with the use of relevantsupporting therapeutic interventions. You willdevelop a critical, analytical and evaluative approachto the principles and practice of chiropractic. Thevalue of investigative skills to enhance and expandknowledge is stressed, and chiropractic is viewed inthe context of other health-related professions.

UCAS code: B320UCAS tariff: 320 points (eg. ABB at A-level, toexclude General Studies). A-levels must includeBiology and normally Chemistry. Five GCSEs atgrade C or above, including Maths and EnglishLanguage are also required. How you will StudyTypically, you will spend around 20 hours each weekin lectures, practicals, tutorials, laboratory andclinical work. We use a variety of teaching styles andassessment methods, so you will get the most fromyour learning experience. The precise mix of learningmethods varies from module to module, dependingon the most appropriate method to deliver thematerial. Practical sessions provide hands-onexperience. During these sessions you will be closelyled through the practical work as an effective meansof developing skills.

Career Opportunities Chiropractic is a growing, independent, primaryhealthcare profession and our course boasts anexcellent employment rate. Some graduates takeadvantage of opportunities for employment inestablished practices and some prefer to beindependent practitioners. There is also theopportunity to apply for registration and work inother countries. The University of South Wales isaccredited by the European Council on ChiropracticEducation (ECCE), which facilitates applications forregistration to practise in other countries around theworld.

Hospital Placement ProgrammeAs part of the overall clinical training, final yearstudent clinicians participate in an observationalprogramme at a number of local hospitals. Studentsattend clinical rounds, view live surgical procedures,and attend lectures by consultants. This innovativeprogramme for chiropractic students is the first of itskind in the UK, and provides students withadditional experience of working with otherhealthcare professionals in an integrated way.

Teaching FacilitiesThe Welsh Institute of Chiropractic has registeredchiropractors who supervise the training of studentclinicians in our facilities. Facilities include a modernlecture theatre with the latest technology to supportinnovative teaching practice. We have a viewingwindow, where students can observedemonstrations and evaluations taking place in ourskills laboratory. There are also rooms to aid theinstruction of students during their pre-clinicaltraining. All clinical teaching rooms are fitted withadvanced audio-visual equipment to enhance thelearning experience.

Professional Contract for ChiropracticStudentsThe MChiro has regulations specific to theprofessional and clinical nature of the programme.These regulations are in addition to those adheredto by all students at the University. A contract hasbeen introduced specifying the terms under whichthe University will provide a programme ofeducation and training, meeting the requirements ofthe GCC and the University of South Wales. Thecontract is designed to reflect the demands of theregulations and the professional behavioursassociated with them.

Clinical TrainingThe clinical experience you have in training is ofmajor importance. For this reason, aspects of clinicalwork are introduced from the start and are carefullyintegrated with the academic subjects studied.Clinical modules are presented within amultidisciplinary framework, including behaviouralscientists, medical practitioners, radiologists,radiographers, external chiropractors, nurses andnutritionists.

There is a continuous development in clinicalexpertise throughout the programme, whichculminates in student clinicians providingchiropractic care, under supervision, in the Institute’soutpatient clinic. At the end of the third year, you arerequired to attend the outpatient clinic during thesummer until the end of the fourth year of theprogramme.

The ClinicThe Institute offers clinical chiropractic healthcareservices to the community, which are provided byour students. The clinic is fully computerised anduses the latest equipment to provide chiropractictreatment. The student work room has beendeveloped to support fourth-year training. Wi-Fi isavailable throughout the University and in the clinic.Treatment facilities include 20 treatment rooms, adigital X-ray suite, a rehabilitation suite, specialistskills laboratory and seminar room. The clinic aims toprovide the highest standard of chiropractichealthcare from its student clinicians and qualifiedchiropractors. Chiropractic healthcare services areprovided by student clinicians, fully supervised byqualified chiropractors who are registered by thestatutory body, the General Chiropractic Council.This ensures that the training received and thetreatment given meet the high standards demandedby legislation.

When does the MChiro and Pre-ChiropracticFoundation Year start?September.

Will I need to purchase any clinic equipment?Students will be loaned a clinical diagnostic kit and awhite clinical jacket for use during clinics. Studentswill also have the option to purchase their ownclinical diagnostic kit if they wish which will cost inthe region of £300-£400. Students will need toconsider a budget of £100 per year for books.

What about English?IELTS 6.0 overall with a score of at least 5.5 in eachcomponent. TOEFL, Pearson, Cambridge EnglishExams and IGCSE are also considered.

How much money will I spend?We estimate that between £145 and £166 shouldcover your weekly living costs (includingaccommodation).

Where will I live?There are many options available to you. You maywish to stay in university owned halls of residenceon the Treforest campus or private accommodationin the local area. Our accommodation team can helpyou decide, please visitwww.southwales.ac.uk/accommodation.
