ISM520: Innovative Solutions in Complex Organizations Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend 14-20 hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes Course Description: This course presents a series of real world business problems that require effective IT solutions in complex organizations, which may include collaboration with local and multinational vendors. The student will analyze existing technology in the workplace and evaluate new trends in information technology including cloud computing, virtualization, and mobile solutions for remote employees in an effort to gain or maintain technological competitive advantages. This course presents a view of IT as a means to deliver business value. Students will apply the models and frameworks presented to analyze existing technology in the workplace and evaluate new trends in order to add measureable value to the enterprise in its efforts to achieve strong competitive advantage. Course Overview: "But what ... is it good for?" -- Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip. Most information technology (IT) professionals are aware of what Thomas Watson, a former chairman of IBM, said in 1943: “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” Less well known is the other IBM quote that heads this paragraph, spoken 25 years after Watson’s. Now, over 40 years later, we can definitely say that the microchip is good for something! Less certain is the value that can be placed on the infrastructure that has grown up around the microchip. What is the value of IT? More specifically, what does it contribute to business value? Information technology is literally everywhere. In the business world, it is hard to conceive of an opportunity that does not involve significant IT involvement. In this course, we will look at what makes up IT value and how to measure it. This includes ways to view and plan for the ever-changing landscape of IT, from transaction processing to social media and beyond, as well as important tools like the technology roadmap. Given the speed with which this landscape is altering, a linchpin of our study is a look at the need to innovate, and how to foster innovation in the enterprise. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Collaborate with local and multinational vendors. SAMPLE
