Lucia Enacio
• After her husband, a farmer, passed away, Lucia became the sole provider for four of her children. Without enough seed or experience, she was unable to grow enough to feed her family.
• A loan from Opportunity changed everything. Lucia was finally able to buy bean seeds, learn how to increase her yield, set up a business plan and employ four people from her community.
• After her first harvest, she repaid the loan while also saving for the first time. She dreams of building a house and growing her business.

Chair, Fiorina Foundation; Former Chair & CEO, Hewlett-Packard
“I believe eradicating poverty is a choice we should make and I believe it is a result we can achieve, if we focus on the right tools, the right people and the right organizations…I believe Opportunity International is an organization that not only has its heart in the right place, but is building a systemic, sustainable solution to the world’s poverty.”

B I L L G AT E S
Founder and Technology Advisor, Microsoft Corporation, Co-Chair, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
“Opportunity International created a program for farmers [in Malawi] where when they sell their products they are able to deposit into this digital savings account…What we see is that those who have the opportunity to participate in this program were six to seven times more likely to use new seeds and fertilizer in that next planting season. And so they were able to receive the benefits of that higher productivity and then year by year lift themselves out of poverty.”
68 | Opportunity International
WA R D B R E H M
Chairman, The Brehm Group Inc., Former Chairman, U.S. African Development Foundation
“We all believe that we should be able to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps. But that doesn’t work if you don’t know what a bootstrap is, let alone have any... I love the work of Opportunity International because they always listen first, and through listening help discover talents and opportunities that can then be turned into income generating opportunities.”
