THE POWER OF INVESTING IN WOMEN

Empowering women to become leaders and income providers

Opportunity focuses significant attention and resources on helping women because:

14 | Opportunity International

This leaves them more vulnerable to

poverty, forced labor and violence

Cultural and legal inequities in many

developing countries prevent women from accessing training,

education and business opportunities

This means millions of women lack access to the basic necessities

they need to be productive

They have few tools to prepare for unexpected events and expenses

Lucia Enacio

• After her husband, a farmer, passed away, Lucia became the sole provider for four of her children. Without enough seed or experience, she was unable to grow enough to feed her family.

• A loan from Opportunity changed everything. Lucia was finally able to buy bean seeds, learn how to increase her yield, set up a business plan and employ four people from her community.

• After her first harvest, she repaid the loan while also saving for the first time. She dreams of building a house and growing her business.

“Opportunity International created a program for farmers [in Malawi] where when they sell their products they are able to deposit into this digital savings account…What we see is that those who have the opportunity to participate in this program were six to seven times more likely to use new seeds and fertilizer in that next planting season. And so they were able to receive the benefits of that higher productivity and then year by year lift themselves out of poverty.”
