Revenue sharing overviewIn today’s regulatory landscape, there’s a growing trend among retirement plan providers providing clients with expanded pricing solutions. Offering a menu of low-cost investment choices that pay no indirect compensation is one such option that is growing in popularity.

Some general background: Revenue sharing or indirect compensation refers to payments received from the fund families that are used to offset certain costs associated with the plans. This revenue sharing is reflected in the funds’ expense ratios.

A “zero revenue” share class does not feature revenue sharing or other indirect compensation. As a result, a zero revenue fund’s expense ratio will be lower than the expense ratios for other share classes offered for the same fund. The associated plan cost offset will instead be reflected in the plan’s program and administrative (P&A) charge, which will be adjusted accordingly.
