Another upcoming event that many residents look forward to is the Residents Ball which will be held in early August. If you want to get involved in the preparations, let your RA know. Keep an eye out for the first meeting details in your hall and on Facebook. McHardy Hall is currently in the leading run for the Gumboot Shield, but it is early days and plenty of points are still up for grabs. If you want to improve your hall points tally, make sure you get involved in all the events we have. TOUCH TOURNAMENT

SEX AND THE CITY

Due to poor weather this Past Sunday, Touch has been postponed until Sunday 28th April.

We all know some of you have been rolling around in the hay bales lately, so hopefully as a result of Sex and the City, you know how to do it safely. This event was even bigger again this year meaning it must be striking a cord with our students which is great to hear. Sex and the City started off with a bang as the Family Planning Team were auctioning off desirable attributes we look for in a partner teaching about relationships. The Medical Centre introduced who they were and touched on flu vaccinations. Tracey Bentall then covered the stuff that no one wants to talk about and had everyone’s full attention with her lively presentation for 20 minutes! Alcohol Safety was also covered and following this, a very serious talk by Det. Sergeant Ash Gurney from NZ Police about Sexual Assault. Although the ice cream had started to melt, it was worth the wait with all the delicious toppings on offer. Yet another packed out event, with those all-important Gumboot points on offer, so thank you to all that came. It was a good night, and no one went home empty handed. A big congratulation to Craiglockhart and Bindaloe Hall for over 90 percent of their residents turning up for the event. Your social account is now $100 happier and the addition of top Gumboot points has positioned you amongst the leading halls ahead of Touch Tourney. A big thank you to the Massey Medical Centre for putting together the goody packs for each participant and our wonderful speakers and MC. EXAM PREPARATION STUDYUP: KNOWLEDGE TO GO

Welcome to the second half of the semester. Unfortunately, life gets a little more serious this term. Exams loom ominously and the unfettered good life that characterised the first few weeks of Term 1 seems so long ago. At the time of writing, North Korea is still threatening to blow up South Korea and anyone else within range of whatever missiles they can get off a launch pad, America is threatening to blow them up in return, and John Key’s short term memory is still so bad he can’t remember who he didn’t see, or what he didn’t read, in the recent inconvenient past. We live in a crazy world. Christians believe that in the midst of this chaos the living creator God has come amongst us in the historical person of Jesus and brought light and a means of restoration to both this craziness and our own fractured lives. That is the good news we try, however inadequately, to embody and affirm through the life of the Centre. Certainly something to think about.

Dale Smith (originally from Australia) has been voted as the Resident of the month. Studying towards a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Dale was nominated this award for a variety of reasons. Dale is always keen to have a chat with any resident or RA to ask how their day has been and is genuinely interested in the replies. From this it is easy to see why he is keen to become a vet due to his caring personality and willingness to help others. Dale gets involved in every event and always takes a lead role in getting others to participate. Getting students to cooperate and be involved has contributed to the tight community within City Court and Dale has been an integral part in providing a solid foundation for the 2013 City community. He has shown great team spirit by being involved in both the netball and football social league teams and cheering others along when on the sideline. Dale is an excellent role model for other residents as he has shown dedication to his studies, putting in 100% in the days leading up to assessments. Congratulations Dale on making City Court Resident of the Month for March, 2013!

Thanks to all of you in the Halls who were involved in some way or another with the Relay for Life.

Overall Team Massey finished 8th with a total of 659 laps. We also featured in the 3rd fastest time in comparison to all the other groups in the Manawatu with a lap from Troy Davey of Egmont Court. This lap was timed at: 1.01.025. Matai Hall contributed above and beyond by running nine extra laps for Kiwitea Hall - your contribution is acknowledged.

Congratulations to McHardy Hall for collecting the highest donations, and to Egmont Court for running the most number of laps (15), averaging 1’12” per lap.

Semester One Only Contracts: If your Residential Agreement is for semester one only, and you wish to extend your contract until the end of the year, please come to the Residential Services Office by 9TH June 2013 to sign up for next semester. If you are leaving at the end of the semester, please ensure your fees are fully paid and that you have completed the Bond Refund Form, (a copy of this form will be sent to you soon) and return it to the RSO. If you are unsure of the length of your contract please contact our office. Semester Break: In May you will receive an email regarding the three week break in June/July with information in regard to the meal rebate available for this time. Please note your contract does cover this 3 week period and you will be charged your normal accommodation fees for the full 3 weeks. Further information is available on page 26 of the Accommodation Handbook 2013 under the Check Out section.

All Matai residents have to vacate and completely clear out their rooms for the 3 week break, so that distance students can use these rooms.

DON’T ASSUME YOU’RE IMMUNE

Exams are looming on the horizon and whether you are super organised (your typical female vet student) or totally disorganised (shall I risk saying males generally), a dose of the flu in those critical days leading up to exams or during exams themselves, will really muck things up. So don’t take any chances, make an appointment now with our new Principal Nurse, Becky, who would love to see you and for about $15.00 will administer the flu vaccine to give you some peace of mind. If you happen to have asthma, diabetes or some other chronic medical condition then you will qualify for a free flu jab. Don’t take any chances. A more serious condition you can be immunised against is Meningitis C. This is the most common form of meningococcal infection circulating in the community. People living in halls of residence such as yourselves, are at higher risk than average of contracting this infection and for this reason we are encouraging all of you to think seriously about getting immunised against this nasty infection.

It does cost a bit: $40 – 50 for the vaccine that gives 1-2 years protection, $100 – 110 for the vaccine that provides a stronger and more prolonged immune response. Finally, another reminder to all female halls students that have not had the HPV vaccine already. If you get your first dose before the age of 20yrs then the full course of 3 injections is free, over $500 worth of vaccinations! As part of the Health Department campaign to get people such as yourselves to update your immunisations,

Massey Medical Centre will sponsor a free pizza night for the hall that has the highest percentage of its residents receiving a flu vaccination at the Massey Medical Centre before the end of May 2013.

So ring up or come in, ask for Becky, and she’ll do the honours.

STUDENT COUNSELLING

Getting Great Sleep Sleep is as essential to us as food, air and water. Sometime in your life you may have difficulty sleeping - many people do. Anyone can suffer from insomnia, although sleeping problems are more common among women, and can be triggered by illness, smoking and overuse of alcohol amongst other things. Sleep problems are surprisingly common among students. While it is not an illness and is in no way life-threatening, insomnia can be very distressing, frustrating, exhausting, depressing and at worst it can make you feel like you're going crazy. There are two broad types: Chronic insomnia - lasting for several weeks, months or even years – and Transient insomnia - lasting for a few nights or weeks only, usually connected to a stressful event such as an exam, or a bereavement. Within these broad categories insomnia usually takes one or more of the following forms:

Difficulty falling asleep - more common among young people

Sleeping lightly and restlessly, waking often, lying awake in the middle of the night, which may be associated with depression.

Waking early and being unable to get back to sleep - this is more common in anyone worrying about something in particular.

Main Causes Insomnia is a condition that is caused by something else! Sometimes it won't be immediately obvious what the causes are in your own case, but the following list might give clues:

states of mind - anxiety, depression, worry, anger, grief, anticipating a difficult event

change - moving house/city, starting university

environment - noise, discomfort, time zone change

pain - one of the commonest causes

medical conditions - heart, breathing, stomach, digestive, high blood pressure, arthritis, anorexia.

recreational drugs - including nicotine, caffeine, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, cannabis.

sleeping pills and tranquillisers - can actually cause sleep disturbance

other prescription drugs - including some contraceptives, diuretics, slimming pills, beta-blockers, stimulants.

Some causes of insomnia can't be easily dealt with but most can. What can you do about insomnia? A great deal. The good news about insomnia is that you can cure yourself - in your own way, in your own time and at your own pace. You may wish to enlist the support or help of your doctor or a counsellor, but you won't necessarily need to. However you must be prepared to make some changes in your lifestyle in order to sleep better. Things you can do to help yourself Change Your Environment

You need a comfortable bed and a room that's quiet, warm and dark enough. Unfortunately this is not always be possible. You might have noisy neighbours, a cold room with no sun, a partner who snores, furniture you have to make do with. But there are some things you can do which will help.

Your bed - put a board under the mattress if it sags, or try putting your bed in a different position. Make sure your bedding is clean and that you are warm enough, but not too hot.

Light - if light troubles you use thicker curtains or putting a scarf or a sleep mask over your eyes. If you feel more comfortable with a little light, leave the curtains open a little or use a night light.

Noise

Noise is a common cause of sleeplessness! Use earplugs if it's noise you can't do anything about - or change your attitude towards it. People can sleep through high levels of noise - it's not so much the level of noise but how you feel about it that keeps you awake. Use relaxation exercises to calm yourself and take your mind off it. Take some 'diplomatic action' - e.g. talking to noisy neighbours. Keep a radio/tape player by your bed and use it to mask other noise. And if noise from neighbours continues to be a serious problem - speak to your RA’s.

Change Your Lifestyle

If you are having difficulty sleeping and are serious about solving the problem you will have to change some aspects of your lifestyle. For a start you will need to cut out or cut down on all stimulants. These include: coffee and tea, alcohol, nicotine, cola drinks, food additives, 'junk food', slimming pills or appetite suppressants.

Here are a number of other suggestions

exercise regularly

stay up until a reasonable bedtime even if you feel sleepy earlier

go to bed only when you are feeling really tired and sleepy

if you can't sleep, get up and only go back to bed when you're really sleepy again

establish a routine that gives you 7-8 hours sleep (individual needs do vary)

get up at the same time each day if you're a late sleeper, force yourself to get up earlier (sleeping longer in the day does not really make any on-going difference!)

relax mentally and physically for an hour before bedtime

have a warm bath, do some yoga or take a light walk before turning in

make a list of the things on your mind then forget about them

do a security check - but only once!

replace negative thoughts with positive ones e.g. "I can sleep/get back to sleep" Some things to avoid:

taking stimulants to keep you awake, or sedatives or alcohol to help you sleep

sleeping during the day no matter how tired you are

going to bed when you're stressed, wound up or not ready

having arguments at bedtime or in bed

using your bed for working, watching TV, eating, telephoning - i.e. waking activities

lying in bed awake for more than 30 minutes

eating, drinking or smoking when you get up during the night

falling asleep in front of the TV

drinking too much towards the end of the evening

worrying yourself into not sleeping (and keeping looking at the clock to see how long you have been lying awake!) getting angry with yourself or the world if you can't sleep - it only makes it worse!

You won't need to do all of these. Decide which would be most helpful and start with those. If that doesn't help, try others until you are sleeping better. Your aim is to break the cycle of insomnia. You can achieve this by establishing a good bedtime/sleep routine and by reinforcing the connection between bed and sleep.

Getting additional help The focus of this article is self-help. You may, however, feel that you need some additional help in dealing with your sleeping problem. There are a variety of self-help books and CDs as well as number of people who can help you - a counsellor at the Student Counselling Service, or your doctor. You needn't feel bad about having to ask for help - insomnia is not a trivial matter. It can be debilitating and, once established, it can be difficult to shift - professional help and encouragement may be just what you need. Introducing Wireless Networks at the Recreation Centre The Recreation Centre has gone wireless! Over the semester break wireless infrastructure has been installed and the connection was activated on Monday 22nd April. If you have a wireless-capable laptop, PDA or other wireless device you can now access the connection by choosing the MU Student network from your wireless device and using your student login. Visitors will be able to connect through Central Free Wifi. Whether you want to check your email, utilise one the of the many great workout aps or just listen to live streaming music it’s all now at your fingertips.

How Fit are You? FIT FOR LIFE - FREE FITNESS TESTING FOR STUDENTS The Recreation Centre introduces Fit For Life – free fitness testing for Massey students. This is your chance to really understand how fit you are. You’ll undergo a series of exercises to measure your cardio fitness, strength, resting heart rate, blood pressure and flexibility. Starts 6 May 2013. Testing will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12pm – 2pm. For more information or to book your test please see the Recreation Centre reception.

Stress Building Up? Uni Life can be pretty stressful. New friends, new places, new challenges – it’s all pretty exhilarating. But now you’re into the swing of things, all those conflicting demands can also make student life seem a total nightmare!

When stress kicks in, come on down to the Rec Centre and de-stress by pumping up your endorphins. The brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters are released when you engage in any form of vigorous exercise. After a few minutes working out you’ll forget the day’s irritations by just concentrating on your body’s movements. If you regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, the resulting energy and optimism can help you remain clear and calm in everything that you do.

Regular exercise improves your mood and your self-confidence and helps to reduce depression and anxiety. Ease your stress levels at the Rec Centre and gain command over your body and your life!
