YOUR VIEWS

A big hopeI want to congratulate 20-year-old Abi Symesfor her courage and strong self-determinationto be part of the mayoral race in PalmerstonNorth which is heating up (ManawatuGuardian October 16) in our city. Like myselfand many other youth, Abi is sick and tired ofour political system tainted with bureau-cracy.

Palmerston North City Council lackseconomic management and has failedmiserably to generate enough employmentopportunities for its younger generation.

Our city is dying and businesses arestruggling hard to pay bills.

The time has come for our small economyto have an electrical shock and to be revivedfrom its roots to finally give our depressed, angry and frustrated youth some hope.

Abi is nobly striving to see the poverty

problem in our city finally addressed andresolved with practical solutions in our citycouncil forum rather than continuouslysweeping this problem under the rug.

Poverty is an evil in any society whetherit’s rich (natural resources) or poor (inutilisation of human capital). Poverty is amanmade problem, at the same time it canonly be resolved with a manmade solution.According to Eastern cultures, the mainreason why people are poor in the first placeis because of the lavish spending of the rich.Youths are the engines of economic develop-ment and the future leaders of our country. The time has come to listen to their concernsand address them critically before it’s too late. How far our political bureaucracy willcontinue to leave more people struggling, only time will tell.

A Palmerston North crossfit athlete ishoping to reclaim his title as NewZealand’s fittest man in the upcomingBattle of the Fittest in Auckland.

Mahdi Te Heuheu won the title lastyear in an event that has become NewZealand’s longest running and mostprestigious fitness competition.

As well as being a coach at localCrossFit affiliate CrossFit Mana, MrTe Heuheu is a soldier in the NewZealand Army.

“It’s been a huge challengebalancing my training with work andthe demands of a young family, but Iknow it’s worth the sacrifice. It’s whatI’ve got to do to not just becompetitive, but to win again,” hesaid.

The Battle of the Fittest pushesathletes to the extreme in crossfitstyle workouts which none of theathletes know of until they have tocomplete it.

The gruelling workouts test arange of functional movementsincluding moving large loads longdistances as fast as they can.

For the first time this year theevent is open to Australian athletesand 160 competitors are expected.

“There’ll be some super strong andtalented athletes there, it’ll be theideal test of my training efficacy andwill highlight any areas I need to workon,” Mr Te Heuheu said.

“The level of CrossFit competition

in New Zealand has increased massivelyover the past few years; there are somereally fit guys out there and I knowthey’ll be snapping at my heels wantingto beat me.”

The competition runs fromNovember 7-9 in Greenlane, Auckland.

CrossFit has become a worldwidefitness phenomenon and now hasaround 10,000 affiliates across the globe.

BUDGET: A grocery shop of $36.20 for Heather and her family. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Poverty challengeharder than expectedBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Taking up the Live Below the LineChallenge was an easy call for HeatherKnox who saw it as an opportunity toraise awareness of those living inpoverty.

The mother-of-two and her husbandhad just $11.25 each to feed themselves forfive days. The grocery list was shorteneddown to canned mackerel, potatoes, tinned tomatoes, pasta and rice.

Mrs Knox and her family completedthe challenge last year too but says thistime their focus changed from how theywere going to get through, to those livingin poverty.

“It’s much harder than you think. Youstart to realise how much you actuallyspend on food each week.”

Their awareness was raisedthroughout the campaign whichencourages participants to documenttheir daily meals and engage indiscussion.

Oxfam, which leads the initiative, saysthe goal is to raise widespread awarenessby allowing participants to gain aninsight into hardships faced by those

living in extreme poverty.“You forget the luxury items you can

just go to the fridge and pull out,” MrsKnow said.

“Things like coffee or milk for thechildren were things we couldn’t keepgiving—if you go over your limit one dayyou run the risk of having nothing thenext.”

Society’s view that those living inpoverty should be baking their own breadand growing their own vegetables is toonaive, she added.

“Production adds up too. To go out andbuy compost is like $30.”

Despite praise from other people, MrsKnox said she felt more could be done toaddress these issues.

“I would have walked past the fooddonation box at New World probably 100times — last week I put something in.There’s got to be plenty of people who candrop something in after they’ve donetheir big shop.”

Live Below the Line officially raisedmore than $360,000 nationwide. If you’dlike to learn more or become involved innext year’s challenge, please visitwww.livebelowtheline.com.

Manawatu lecturer’sNobel Prize connectionBy DALEWICKEN

While not many people will haveheard of this year’s winner of theNobel Prize for Literature, alocal French lecturer hopes tochange this.

Massey University’s DrFrance Grenaudier-Klijn wouldcall herself a ‘groupie’ of Frenchauthor Patrick Modiano, sowouldn’t disagree with his winof the prize, and believes hisbooks would appeal to localreaders.

Modiano’s books are all basedin Paris and explore themes ofdisappearance, memory and thetraces that people leave behind.

“Every time I read them I find

something else deeper and new,”she said. “I love him so I’mcompletely biased but he’s areally important writer, reallyrelevant to our times.”

Her obsession began whenher mother sent her one of hisnovels in 1994 and since then he’sbecome a major part of her life. She currently teaches his workin a French Literature paper andis in the process of writing abook which analyses thefemininity in his novels.

“He has a way of portrayinghistory without being definitiveor didactic. He mixes tenses andhistorical eras as well asimaginary characters.”

Dr Grenaudier-Klijn has also

done work as a literarytranslator and would love totranslate Modiano’s works intoEnglish one day.

So far only seven of his 28novels have been translated intoEnglish. And has she ever methim? “That’s a question I getasked a lot. I’ve been to his oldapartment but ideally I wouldlove to bump into him on one ofthe Parisian streets in hisnovels, that would be perfect,”she said.

Dr Grenaudier-Klijn will beholding a public lecture aboutPatrick Modiano at thePalmerston North City Libraryin November — date to beconfirmed.

Angels fight family violence

GDN231014enliven

Each hour of each dayaround seven New Zealandchildren are caught up infamily violence. FamilyWorks, part ofPresbyterian SupportCentral, is calling for newGuardian Angels to helpchildren and familiesexperiencing familyviolence in our community.

The vision is to makeAotearoa, New Zealand thebest place in the world togrow up. Yet currentstatistics paint a differentpicture.

According to datasummaries provided byNew Zealand FamilyViolence Clearinghouse2014, last year there were95,080 family violenceinvestigations by NewZealand Police. More than60 per cent of theseinvestigations involved atleast one child under 16years old.

In 2013, 10 children andyoung people were killedby a family member. Manymore were hospitalisedafter being assaulted by amember of their family.

Family Works Centralprovides a range of socialservices to supportchildren, young people andtheir families who areexperiencing poverty, violence and griefthroughout the lowerNorth Island. Theseservices include support todevelop strategies forkeeping children safe aswell as social work andadvocacy services, counselling, budgetingadvice, and parenting

support and education.These services are

partially Government-funded but demand meansthere’s a funding shortfallevery year.

Family Works Centralgeneral manager JuliaHennessy says there are toomany children whose livesare profoundly affected byviolence. “Family Workshelps 15,000 at-risk childrenand their families everyyear — that’s 40 people aday. Family violence andconflict are high on the listof the reasons for referral, along with poverty.

“In some families, violence has beennormalised in day-to-daylife. Perpetrators canchange if they are given theopportunity and theirpartners and children canbe supported to feel strongand safe but they need tohave access to the right

support.”Julia says the Angel

Month campaign appeals toordinary Kiwis to make adifference for children likeAndrew who live in fear oftheir lives.

“Sadly, family violenceoccurs in everyneighbourhood. It’s a hugeissue and everyone can dosomething to help childrenfeel safe and to help makeNew Zealand the best placein the world to grow up.”

■ Manawatu residents canbecome a Guardian Angel bysigning up to make a monthlydonation of $30 to helpfamilies experiencing povertyor violence to access FamilyWorks services. One-offdonations are alsoappreciated. For moreinformation or to make adonation, visitwww.angels.org.nz or call0800 20 50 80.

By DALEWICKEN

While female-owned businesses are on therise around the country, a MYOB report hasshown just 19 per cent of small and mediumbusinesses in the Manawatu are owned bywomen. This compares with the nationalaverage of 41 per cent, a 57 per cent rate ofbusinesses in Waikato and 51 per cent inNorthland.

A recent event held at Caccia Birch Househosted 14 local female business owners whoeach shared their experiences with morethan 100 people who also attended the event.

Baby Beginnings owner Carolyn Trantersaid networking with other business ownerswas a great help.

“Surrounding yourself with likemindedwomen who support and encourage can helpyou grow your business.”

She said one of the challenges of being a

small business is she has to be moreinventive and flexible with resourcesbecause she doesn’t have access to a largemarketing budget.

She also believes small businesses areimportant for communities.

“Small local businesses are oftenrun by owner/operators who are members ofthe local community committed to

supporting their home town.”The MYOB business monitor also

indicated the main reasons for womenventuring into business were for lifestylechanges, to invest in their future and to makemoney from a hobby or interest.

Other businesses showcased at the eventincluded Stamp and Scrap and Pania RyanBeauty Therapy.

By DALEWICKEN

Melissa Downey was pleased to learnshe’d won passes for the Te Apitigorge shuttle, despite never havingused the service before.

She was the winner of a five-trippass for the shuttle after she filled in asurvey about the service.

Destination Manawatu has set upthe service in conjunction with theGorge Biodiversity group andTararua, Horizons and PalmerstonNorth City Councils. EmmaSnelgrove of Cross Country Rentals, who operates the shuttle, said they’reworking together to provide thisservice for locals and visitors, but ifit’s not used it may not continue.

The service provides transportbetween the iSite in The Square, theManawatu Gorge walk and the BridgeCafe.

“If people don’t use it they’ll loseit,” said city councillor Chris Teo-Sherrell.

“We want it to be a viable serviceso this is the final trial before wedecide how to proceed.”

This follows on from a 10-weektrial which took place last summer.

“We take group bookings too, a lotof people think we have limited placesbut there’s always space and we cango and get a bigger vehicle. Nobodygets left behind,” Ms Snelgrove said.

The shuttle has received a highlevel of support from communitygroups and organisations, includingthe Horizons Regional Council busservice. Pick up and drop off points atAshhurst are also available onrequest.

The full shuttle timetable runsfrom November 1 through to the endof March and those involved hope itwill be well used over summer.

Flawless acoustics at Bent HorseshoeThis year’s New Zealand Country Group/Duo of The Year and 2014 New ZealandBest Folk Album Nominees, Into The East, have teamed up with festival favouritesThe Federal String Band to bringPalmerston North a night of flawless andflooring acoustic music.

Graeme Woller (Into The East) hascoined the genre “Ameri-kiwi-ana” todescribe the smooth mix of Americana,

Folk, Country and Bluegrass both groupsglide in and out of.

“We’re at a great place in New Zealandmusic where everyone’s bed-hoppinggenre. There’s clear Kiwi sounddeveloping that doesn’t try to sound likesomeone else, it just unapologeticallystands on its own feet.”

Both Into The East and The FederalString Band have been selected as guests

at Wellington Folk Festival’s 50thAnniversary weekend after both actstravelled as festival goers last year and fellhead over heels for each other’s sound.

McBride says, “We (Into The East) werewandering around the grounds and heardthe rapture happening in the kitchen. Wewere sorely disappointed to find out that itwas regular people and that they just had agorgeous sound.”

Since then both acts have achievedtremendous praise individually butcouldn’t stay away long, appearing inTaranaki recently to rave reviews. Theirappearance in Palmerston North is both aramp up to Wellyfest and a chance foranother musical group hug.

“We have so much respect for eachother.”

GIVING: Sarah Walker at a Variety Bikes for kids presentation. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Wheels for deserving childrenBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Do you know a child who often goeswithout and would love nothing more thanto have his own bike? More than 450 arebeing offered to children across the lowerNorth Island in a competition run byVariety, The Children’s Charity.

Their Bikes for Kids Tour beginsNovember 24 and will be visiting severalcities including Palmerston North.Community members are being asked tonominate a child who they think deservesa bike.

Variety chief executive Lorraine Taylorsaid every child should have the ability toexperience the thrill of having their ownbicycle. “Riding a bike is a child’sprerogative — something that providesthem with a sense of independence,” shesaid. “However for many Kiwi kids certaincircumstances mean they miss out.”

She said they were encouraging

teachers, parents, caregivers, friends andgrandparents to nominate a child agedbetween seven and nine to receive a newbike and helmet.

To be part of the competition, a childalso needs to come from a disadvantagedfamily or has recently overcome some typeof hardship. They may also be consideredif they are a role model to others or are“consistently making a difference”.

The tour is part of the annual VarietyKids on the Move programme whichallows for funding and equipment toimprove children’s mobility. The charityworks hard to improve the lives of about260,000 New Zealand children living inpoverty.

■ To nominate a child, please complete theonline form at www.variety.org.nz or call (09)520-4111 for more information. For adonation of $200 you can buy a bike andhelmet for one child.

Ideal time tore-pot orchidsOctober’s a good month tothink about orchid care. Many orchids have finishedflowering and are about to gointo their major growthperiod.

Cymbidium care:Cymbidiums are the most

popular orchids. They’re theones with the tall flowerspikes and bulbous swellingsat the base of the long strappyleaves. This is the best time ofyear to tidy them up and getthem ready for the newgrowing season.

Start by taking a good lookat the orchid to see if theclump is crowded enough toneed dividing. Sometimesthis decision is easy: thebulbous bases are so crowdedtogether they’re almostbursting out of the pot. Orthere are a lot of dead bulbs inthe pot. With either of thesesituations, it’s worth re-potting. But don’t rush into it— a plant can stay in thesame pot for a number ofyears. And, remember, afterorchids have been divided, itcan take two or three yearsfor them to reach floweringstage again.

How to re-pot acymbidium orchid:■ Remove the plant from thepot. Sometimes it’s evennecessary to break the pot inorder to free the orchid.■ Take a knife or anotherstrong tool and use it to leverbetween the bulbs(pictured). Separate theclump into at least twosections.■ Remove most of theleafless, dead-looking orsquashy bulbs. You can leavea single row of these backbulbs next to the leafy shoots.■ Check the roots fordamaged, rotted or tangledsections. Remove these.■ Choose new pots. YatesTuscan pots are ideal becausethey have plenty of drainageholes. Good drainage is

critically important fororchids.■ Pack some orchid pottingmix into the base of the pot.■ Sit the orchid in the pot andfill around it with the mix.Make sure that each bulb issitting above the mix.■ Water well and sprinklesome pellets of DynamicLifter Organic Plant Food ontop of the pot.■ Begin feeding with YatesOrchid Food every two weeks.■ After Christmas, toencourage flowering, useYates Thrive Flower & FruitSoluble Plant Foodfortnightly.

Caring for other orchids:Moth orchids

(Phalaenopsis spp) arebecoming increasinglypopular. These can be keptindoors permanently in awell-lit position but will, onceit’s reliably warm, appreciatea spell outdoors in a lightlyshaded spot. These plantsreally appreciate humidity sokeep them well watered in hotweather and mist over theleaves regularly. Mothorchids can produce newshoots and buds from the stemthat flowered last year so onlytrim dead sections fromflowering shoots.

Moth orchids can be re-potted into fine orchid barkevery three years or so. Feedduring the warmer monthswith Yates Orchid Food orThrive Flower & Fruit. Watchfor mealy bugs — a Yates RoseGun Advanced will take careof most of the common pestsand diseases, including mealybug.

Slipper orchids, so-namedbecause their flowersresemble a dainty piece oflady’s footwear, willappreciate similar care. Abreak outdoors can be goodfor these plants too butbecause they’re naturallyunderstorey dwellers, theycan tolerate more shade.

Feeding time with creepy crawlies

GDN231014temanawa

Frogs, stick insects, weta and fish — wecatch up with live exhibit keepers, LenaOlley and Karin Seivwright, to find out allabout the creepy crawlies who reside hereat Te Manawa.

Lena and Karin are particularly partialto the odd invertebrate and have bothcompleted Masters degrees in ConservationBiology, also having studied Zoology andEcology.

Lena’s Master’s focus was looking at thepopulation genetics of the New Zealandfalcon, specifically looking at whether wehave more than one population in NewZealand. Future research will includestudying further the ecology of the NewZealand falcon.

Karin focused on the post-releasesurvival and reproductive success of littleblue penguins rehabilitated after the Renaoil spill in Tauranga. She assessed theeffectiveness of the ‘oiled wildlife’rehabilitation process.

“I’m also scoping out a PhD projectlooking at the ecology and populationtrends of yellow-eyed penguins in the sub-Antarctic Islands,” she said.

Lena and Karin are at Te Manawa everySaturday and Sunday at 3pm to feed thenative fish where guests can join in,observe and ask questions of the keepers tolearn lots of interesting facts about ourwettest residents. Koaro, banded kokapu, shortfin kokopu and giant kokopu areamong the species kept in the Te Awaexhibit, while a number of bullies recentlyarrived from Zealandia in Wellington.

Te Manawa is also home to live caveweta, frogs and stick insects. Some peopleare surprised to learn cave weta are foundnot only in caves but under stones, loosebark or under rotting logs.

“Weta have ridges on their abdomensand they rub their hind legs against them tomake sound to communicate,” says Karin.

Lena and Karin are passionate about theenvironment and conservation and arelooking forward to showcasing theirinterests during Conservation Week fromNovember 1 to 9.

“Seeing as we both love our native fish,at the museum one of our biggest concerns

is the state of our freshwater in NewZealand,” Karin said. “The pollution anddegradation of our waters from intensivedairying is putting a huge strain on ournative fish species.

“New Zealand now has the highestpercentage of endangered freshwater fish inthe world. We need to work with localcouncils and the Government to improvethe protection of our waterways and in turnto protect the habitat of our very specialnative fish.”

Lena and Karin will be offering guidedtours around Te Awa and their invertebratefriends. Visitors during Conservation Weekwill also have the chance to go behind thescenes and check out the meal wormsdestined for the carnivorous cave weta. There’ll be rotting logs in the Te Manawacourtyard that kids and adults alike willenjoy fossicking through to find bugs andgrubs to feed to the fish. Check out thewebsite for dates and times of tours andother Conservation week activities.

Be inspired, be amazed, be empowered bythe Reel Earth ‘Spring Celebration’ fromOctober 28 to November 1 at the GlobeTheatre. This retrospective event hostssome of the best environmental filmsshown at previous Reel Earth film festivalsover the past nine years, while gainingmomentum for their 10th Festival Seasonin June next year.

The idea behind this tandem event is toboth celebrate the symbiotic marriage offilm and our ecosystem and raise theprofile of the festival, in anticipation oftheir 10th anniversary. Diehard fans won’tbe disappointed as new material will offera taste of what’s in store next year.

Festival director Dr Sandra Schalk saysthe message is hopeful and positive in thatwe can all do our bit for the environment,

rather than feel overwhelmed by the doomand gloom merchants. She invites you toview the “wonderful way in which filmmakers bring environmental issues closerto us”, adding that “if seven billion peoplecan do one small thing to make it better, itdoes add up”.

There are mid-morning sessions for theearly bird, followed by lunchtime sessionsfor those who like sustainability with theirsushi, all for a gold coin donation. Pop inafter work or catch the last show whenentry is $5.

Check the website first as theprogramme is subject to change.

Dr Schalk is grateful to the festivalsponsors, PNCC and NZ AgriculturalGreenhouse Gas Research Centre, for theircontinued support of Reel Earth.

When holidays come around it’sgood to think about the safetyof you and your family.

So to ensure you get to yourdestinations safely here are afew tips:

• Prepare your car - haveit serviced and checkthat you’re prepared foremergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit.

• Prepare yourself - be restedbefore a long drive, plan thetrip so you share the drivingand take regular breaks toavoid fatigue.

• If you plan to have a drink -plan not to drive.

• If you have children in thecar ensure they are in theappropriate child restraint.

• If you’re travelling with petsmake sure they are restrained- for everybody’s safety.

• Tow check when towing atrailer or caravan.

Brush up on good drivingtechniques.

In NZ drink driving is a factor inabout one in every five crasheswhere someone loses their life.Of the people who are killed,

88 percent are men and75 percent are under the ageof 40.

Alcohol affects your drivingskills, moods and behaviour.Once it’s been consumed theeffects cannot be reversed. Theonly thing that will sober youup is time. Getting back to zero(sobering up), takes a long time.No amount of coffee, food, physical activity or sleep willspeed up the process.

You don’t have to be drunkto be affected by alcohol. Youmight feel normal but no onedrives as well after drinkingalcohol.

Novice drivers with any levelof alcohol in their bloodare at a much higher risk ofcrashing. This is why learner andprovisional licence holders arerestricted to a zero alcohol limit.

Since the introduction of RBT(random breath testing) in 1982,fatal crashes involving alcoholhave dropped from 40 percentof all fatalities to the currentlevel of 19 percent.

If you are heading out on theroad this weekend – pleasedrive safely – we want you andyour family home.
