WORK OF THE SPIRIT
Where the human spirit fails, the Holy Spirit fills.
--Anonymous
Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. It is fifty days after Easter. Pentecost is a reversal of what happened at the Tower of Babel. There the people started to speak many languages which
brought out confusion and division. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the many languages became one—that of love that was understood by all. The Holy Spirit creates harmony and unity.
The Feast of Pentecost is the birthday of the church. It is the day that the apostles after receiving the Holy Spirit went out and preached the gospel. The promise of the Holy Spirit was given to them by Jesus himself when He ascended into heaven forty days after Easter.
We have received the Holy Spirit. How are we living out Pentecost in our daily life? How are we spreading the faith? What did first Christians do before Pentecost?
Between Ascension and Pentecost, the church was at prayer doing the first novena. Scripturally, novenas take their origin from the nine days of prayer before Pentecost. After the Ascension, the apostles and disciples, in obedience to the Lord, gathered in the upper room and devoted themselves to constant prayer, together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus (Acts 1:4-5).
When we pray a Novena, we either pray the same prayer for all nine days, or follow a list of prayers to be prayed for each day. Every novena is a bit different in the intention, formation of prayers, and practice.
The Romans had a tradition of novenas for the dead. They would pray and have a feast nine days after the death of their loved ones. In the church, some people offer a novena of Masses for the repose of the soul of their loved ones. To this day, there is the novendiala or Pope's Novena, observed upon the death of the Holy Father.
There is a novena of nine hours to the Infant Jesus of Prague. Instead of praying the novena for nine days, you pray the novena in one day ever hour for nine consecutive hours.
Have you ever said or participated in a novena? I would encourage you to do one and to invite others to join you in a novena prayer.
Come and pray tomorrow the new feast to Mary. According to the decree by Pope Francis, it observes that the veneration of Mary as Mother of the Church has ancient roots in Catholic tradition, reaching back to St. Augustine and St. Leo the Great. The title, the document says, is rooted in New Testament accounts about Mary.
May we be people of prayer who speak the language of Pentecost to those around us. God’s love and blessing, Fr. Joseph

COME TO US, SPIRIT OF HOLINESS
Holy Spirit,
you banish fear from our hearts;
you bear witness in us that we are children of God;
we pray to you:
Remove from our hearts the spirit of slaves;
place in us the spirit of adopted children
to make us cry out, Abba, Father!

RECONCILED DIVERSITY
A few years ago, during Rome's quiet summer, Pope
Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old
friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise:
Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their
Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked
pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy
Spirits pentecostal work. Unlike Satan, declared Francis,
who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit
creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not
uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity.
Francis named the Spirits gift reconciled diversity.
Pentecost's rich treasury of scriptural readings, for
Saturday’s vigil and Sunday's morning liturgy, traces the
Holy Spirits work from creations beginning, through Jesus
resurrection, into the churches earliest days, now into our
days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirits gentle fire is ours to
share generously, even with those most strikingly different
from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled
diversity.

On June fourteenth in the USA, We celebrate a special holiday.
We have our Flag Day celebration To reflect on freedom in our nation. At homes and buildings, we display
The "Star Spangled Banner" on Flag Day.
The "Stars and Stripes" we proudly fly On tall poles pointing up to the sky. Our red, white, and blue "Old Glory"
Is a great part of America's story. Thirteen colonies, the stripes show,
And fifty stars are the states, we know.
Our flag is a symbol of freedom so dear. We'll fly "Old Glory" year after year.
Thank God our forefathers took a stand To start a free country in a new land. For our great nation, let us all pray
As we fly our flag on this special day.
Flag Day In The USA
