The message found in today’s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous
wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch.
We learn clearly in today’s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues
Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suffering. God’s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. THE CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON– HOUSTON, TEXAS
Staffed by the Josephites since 1948
Very Rev. Nixon A. Mullah, S.S.J.
Pastor
Again we are invited to consider our use of money and where it can take us. The
wealthy from the world of the prophet Amos, those lying in luxury eating lamb chops
for lunch, sipping Beaujolais from bowls, and humming along with the harp—their
wealth has made them sluggish, indifferent, and insulated. “Off into exile,” shouts
Amos. And so they go. “Richman,” pampered in purple and dining sumptuously
daily, can’t even get to the door to find Lazarus lying among the dogs. His wealth
eventually takes him to a place of torment in the netherworld, where he tries to re-
establish the familiar pattern of master and servant. But the rules have changed—no
more a door permitting contact, only a chasm that cannot be bridged. A warning is
found in the First Letter to Timothy, one verse before today’s reading: “For the love
of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed
from the faith” (6:10). Today’s reading advises, “Lay hold of eternal life” (6:12).
Wealth can open doors when it is shared, or imprison us when it is clung to.
How many in our world see us as “Richman” or “Richwoman?”
