The two interesting elements that drastically affect our salvation are, Human Instinct and Human Choices. The two are intrinsically intertwined. The human instinct is different from the animal instinct which we usually call impulsive where a rational element is arguably absent. Whereas in the humans, this instinct is something that motivates all of us to do or not to do something. So it involves choice. As created in the image and likeness of God, His“ imperishable Spirit is in all of us.(Wis.12:1). This Spirit prompts us to do good and to be good all the time. The problem is, are we sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit of God in us? Many a time we are under the influence of many forces in this world, based on our interests, involvements, and the resultant addictions that we are automatically subjected to.. Growing up in good catholic families we are trained to pray, especially before we make any serious choices affecting our life and salvation. This habit enables us to do what is pleasing to God and live as truly the Children of God. Some of us may ignore those good old practices and develop habits of doing things more impulsively or based on peer pressure and social standards. The spirit of prayerful decision making becomes alien to such people. Then they develop rationale to defend the way of the world and to denounce the prayerfulness that is the Catholic Way. But when challenged about this process, all of us are aware of the inner promptings which we know is due to the influence of the Spirit of God in us. Meditations, retreats and serious reflections on our attitudes and choices will help us to discern the role of listening to this Spirit of God in us and its positive advantages in our lives. One thing we all recognize is that the basic instinct is for good. Then we see if our choices are not true to these promptings there are factors outside us interfering with our loyalty to the Spirit of God in us. That is when we need renewal of our spiritual life. Zacchaeus had the instinct to see Jesus (Lk.19:1-10). He was influenced by the Words of the Lord and his love for Jesus. So he made a choice to climb the tree and see Him. This choice resulted in His personal encounter with Jesus and the consequent conversion. When we make choices under the influence of the instinct due to the Spirit of God in us, it will result in our personal encounter with Jesus and our salvation. We have to help our children understand the role of instinct and choices in life. We have to help them recognize the major influences in their lives that will affect their choices. We have to train them not to become victims of external influences that are destructive to their faith and successful future life. Help them to develop a prayerful habit of being sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit of God in us always. God bless you all

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse.

In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s when the Republic was formed, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.

CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confidence appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “The Lord is faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God’s protection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. We can only imagine

In the days of Jesus, belief in the resurrection of the dead had not achieved universal acceptance. In fact,

the Sadducees in today’s Gospel were staunch resurrection deniers and tried to trick Jesus. Turning the tables,

Jesus states that Moses in the distant past believed that the God of our ancestors in faith is truly God of the living,

and that all are alive to God, whether still living or dead. Death is just a phase, a doorway, maybe a tesseract. We

really don’t know. Jesus reassures us that those are unnecessary concerns for the faithful, just as the specifics of

worldly life will no longer be relevant. Not only will our earthly bodies be changed, but all that we knew from

mortal existence—all marriage, all family, all relationships—will be transformed in ways we can’t possibly

imagine. All that we have will be ours again. So we should stop worrying and live so as to be worthy of

whatever comes next, for when we are embraced in the eternal love-feast of glorified existence with God,

our joy will indeed be full.

Christmas Giving Tree

We will again this year be helping the needy in our community. Our Giving Tree will be going up on the

weekend of November 23rd & 24th

When you select a tag from the tree please write down the red number and the family

number on the lists provided.

Thank you for your generosity.
