Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 14, 2019

This past Monday I concelebrated the Funeral Mass at Christ the King for Pamela Barba, the woman that was tragically killed on Green Village Road two weeks ago by a hit and run driver. The Mass was a beautiful celebration of Pamela's life, free of any words of anger or blame on the part of those who spoke about her. Fr. Brian, Pamela's Pastor, spoke about how Pamela was a woman filled with grace who had a close relationship with our Blessed Mother and a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. "Pamela brought beauty into a world that is sometimes made so ugly by hatred, brought joy where there was sadness and brought friendship and accompaniment where there was loneliness." Pamela was no stranger to Saint Vincent Martyr Church. She worshipped here on a regular basis, particularly at our weekday liturgies. I remember a time when Pamela wanted to pray with a friend who was struggling with cancer. The problem was that she was a distance away and Pam couldn't get to her. So Pamela and I met in the rectory, got her friend on speaker phone and we all prayed together. Pamela was an outstanding artist - this copy of one of her paintings is from the booklet for her Mass of Christian Burial. Next to it was printed this prayer:

Heavenly Father, walk with me today and grant that I may hear your

footsteps and gladly follow where they lead. Walk with me today and grant that I may hear your tender voice and quicken to its council. Stay with me today and grant that I may feel your gentle presence in all I do or say and think. Be my strength when I weaken, my courage

when I fear. Help me to know that it is your hand holding mine through all the minutes of all the hours of this day. And when night falls

down, grant that I may know that I am gathered to your Sacred Heart to sleep in love and peace. Amen

(This was the last prayer that Pamela had written out and carried in a small journal in her pocketbook)

Let us pray for Pamela's father and her siblings and her friends and for the repose of Pamela's beautiful soul - and as I am sure Pamela would want - we pray for the driver of the car that hit her - may God's grace touch her heart and soul.

From Father George . . . Last weekend's Gospel spoke about Jesus sending forth the 72 disciples to all the towns he would visit, warning that those places that did not show them hospitality would have a fate worse than Sodom. In this weekend's Gospel it is the Samaritan who usually would have nothing to do with a Jew that shows compassion to the man that was beaten and robbed on his way to Jerusalem. Clearly in Luke's gospel there is a call to Christian hospitality which is to be extended in a way that crosses boundaries and rises above differences. The challenge is how do we bring compassion, mercy and kindness to all of our dealings as individuals, as church and as a nation. For myself, hearing these two gospels as we are also hearing about a father and daughter who drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande and about the places where migrant men, women and children are being housed as they await their future makes me stop and think - what would Jesus say? I know that he would totally reject the blame game that pits one side against the other and uses human beings cynically as political pawns rather than come to a bipartisan solution. We must face the truth that there is an ongoing humanitarian crisis at our border that has resulted in untold suffering for so many children and families. So how do we respond to the crisis in light of our faith in Jesus Christ? It might be helpful to take a look at what we find in Catholic social teaching. The Catholic Catechism instructs the faithful that good government has two duties, both of which must be carried out and neither of which can be ignored. The first duty is to welcome the foreigner out of charity and respect for the human person. Persons have the right to immigrate and thus government must accommodate this right to the greatest extent possible, especially financially blessed nations: "The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him." (Catholic Catechism, 2241) The second duty is to secure one's border and enforce the law for the sake of the common good. Sovereign nations have the right to enforce their laws and all persons must respect the legitimate exercise of this right: "Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens." (Catholic Catechist 2241) I invite you to reflect on these teachings and to think about how we as a nation may bring together both mercy and justice in our response to the crisis. This requires thinking beyond the dualistic and binary to a vision of what could be most effective in advancing God's kingdom of justice, peace and love.

Stewardship

In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us in rich detail what stewardship in action looks like. In fact, this parable could just as accurately be called the parable of the Good Steward. The first thing we note about the Good Samaritan is that he is aware of the needs of those around him and responds generously. He has a hospitable way of looking at the world around him, and so, he is able to “see” in a way that the others did not, and he was “moved with compassion at the sight” of the man. Next, we see the Good Samaritan spring into action to serve this man, setting aside his own schedule and plans in order to meet his needs. He does not just give the man a few dollars or offer some quick words of encouragement from across the road. He goes right up to the man and cares for him, and he commits to returning to the man on his way back. That is how we live out God’s commandments. That is true hospitality and service. That is how a good steward springs into action when he comes upon a neighbor in need. And Jesus says to each of us personally, just as He did in today’s Gospel, “Go and do likewise."

Stewardship Opportunity for Families Parent and Child Lectors

Serving as a liturgical minister is a special way to share your gifts! We are recruiting new Parent and Child Lector Teams for the Fall. This is a beautiful way to participate even more fully in the Mass each week and to spend time as a family reviewing the upcoming readings. The Parent/Child Team proclaim the Readings at the 9 AM Sunday Liturgy. Children should be in the 4th to 8th Grades. A short training is required and materials are available to the family for review before reading. Families are scheduled once every 2 months or so. For more information, please contact Jeanne Buckley at [email protected]. (Teens interested in being Lectors can also contact Jeanne Buckley.)

ROSARY SOCIETY

The Rosary is prayed daily at 8:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 8:30 a.m. Let us continue this devotion to our Blessed Mother. The Rosary Altar Society meets every 2nd Monday of the month with the exception of July and August.

THERE WILL BE NO HOLY HOUR DURING JULY AND AUGUST!

OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

Tuesday, July 16 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Patronal Feast of the Carmelite Order of Friars and Sisters. Its spirituality finds its inspiration in the prophet Elijah, who saw from Carmel a cloud in the distance that would bring rain after a drought. That 'rain bearing cloud' became an image of the savior bearing Mary. Intercessionary prayers will be offered at the conclusion of the Mass, scapulars will be blessed and distributed and a light reception will follow. All are invited. If anyone wishes to bake for the reception, please call Joan Graziano at 973-377-4151.

We will end Friday with further reflection and dinner together at the Romero Center. Departure time from Camden will be 7:45 p.m. Participants are asked to provide their own transportation, but we can help to arrange carpools for those who do not wish to drive alone. The retreat is open to everyone ages 18 and older. The Romero Center requests a limit of 15 participants. The cost is $100. per person. Scholarships are available.
