ANOINTING OF THE SICK ~ The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be offered at the Saturday Vigil & Sunday morning Masses next weekend. The Letter from St. James invites: “Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (5:14) This sacrament is offered

particularly to those suffering from physical or mental illness, the affects of advanced age or who are anticipating surgery or other medical procedures. It may be received as frequently as one is in need of it. Please prayerfully consider if God might be calling you to experience the grace it offers. BEREAVEMENT GROUP ~ Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00PM in the Chapel. If you have experienced a loss and would like to share in a safe and confidential environment, please call Sr. Eleanor at 489-5408. Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, our November Bereavement Group will be held on Wednesday, November 16.

Next Youth Night - is October 24 at 6:30pm at the Parish Center. We will be planning specifics for Fall Fun Day and November Teens on a Mission! See you there!

Fall Fun Day! - October 30th from 12:15-2PM we will have a Fall Fun Day open to grades 6-12. This will include food, pumpkin carving, and games. I am asking a $3 donation to cover the cost of the pumpkins. Please contact Beth if you are planning to attend so I have an estimate of numbers for planning ([email protected]).

Warm Clothing Needed for Refugee Teens - On our next Youth Day, Nov. 6 (only), we will be collecting gently used & clean: coats, jeans, sweaters, sweatshirts and long pants for teens recently resettled in the Capital District. Kathleen Hildago will take the donations to the US refugee Resettlement group. As you clean out your closets, this is an opportunity to help others. Thank you!

Future of Youth Ministry - A number of people have asked: “Are we going to NCYC”? Are we doing a Mission trip?” “Can’t we bring back …?” Additionally, we receive information for events from the diocese, like the March for Life. I have received some input from the teens & now I would like to invite parents together to discern where we should focus our energies outside of Faith Formation. On November 6, at 2pm (before pick-up) I would like to invite parents to meet in the church for a discussion.

Next Youth Day November 6 at 12:15PM - Our topic will be The Bible. Lunch will be pizza and salad. Please bring a dessert and drink to share.

For questions, please contact Beth Carlin, Coordinator of Faith Formation & Youth Ministry at 489-5408, ext 103, or email [email protected]

Coffee and Chocolate and Catholic Social Teaching For the past 10+ years, Saint Vincent’s has been selling Fair Trade coffee and chocolate after Masses on one Sunday of each month (except July & August). The program has been a great success in helping to support Fair Trade and, thus, social justice and Catholic Social Teaching. Our sales, however, have dropped off over the past year. We believe this has occurred

because of a greater awareness of fairly traded products, and that now Fair Trade coffee/chocolate are available in many local stores. Saint Vincent’s has therefore decided to no longer sell these products, but we want to encourage parish members to continue, and when possible increase, their purchases of Fair Trade products. We’re providing some information on Catholic Social Teaching and Fair Trade, and a list of where to find Fair Trade products in the Capital District. We hope you’ll continue to buy Fair Trade coffee, chocolate and consider other products. By making a small change in your buying habits you can practice Catholic Social Teaching and support Fair Trade. Imagine the impact if all Catholics made Fair Trade purchases a priority.

Catholic Social Teaching An important focus of our parish is on social justice issues. The work that we do is based upon Catholic Social Teaching, which is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. This article focuses on Fair Trade which falls under the Catholic Social Teaching of “the dignity of work and the rights of workers” – that the economy must serve people, not the other way around; that work is more than a way to make a living - it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected - the right to: productive work; decent and fair wages, the organization and joining of unions; private property; and to economic initiative.

Fair Trade Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect. It seeks greater equity in international trade, and it contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the world’s Southern Hemisphere. The World Fair Trade Organization describes Fair Trade as being based on the following kinds of principles: - creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers - being concerned for the social, economic & environmental well-being of marginalized small producers - payment of a fair price - ensuring no child labor and no forced labor - commitment to non-discrimination, gender equality and women’s economic empowerment - ensuring good working conditions - respect for the environment

Where to get Fair Trade Products in the Capital District • Hannaford Supermarkets - The Equal Exchange coffee & chocolate (the kind that St. Vincent’s sold) can

be found in the coffee and chocolate sections in some stores and in the Nature’s WayIsle in others. The store also sells tea, bananas, sugar, rice, and fresh fruits with the symbol noted above/left.

• Ten Thousand Villages - Stuyvesant Plaza; is a not-for-profit that sells only fair trade products from more than 130 artisan groups from 38 countries. The store carries home décor, personal accessories, and gift items as well as coffee and chocolate. Visit www.tenthousandvillages.com for more details.

• Terra Farms - sells organic nuts, dried fruits, nut butters, coffee, and chocolate under the Fair Trade USA with symbol noted above/right.

• Honest Weight Food Co-Op - sells not only coffee and chocolate but many other fair trade products. All are also sold under the Fair Trade USA symbol noted above/right.

• Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s - sell numerous fair trade products under the Fair Trade USA symbol and other fair trade symbols.

The above information on Fair Trade and where products can be purchased will be posted on the church’s website - www.stvincentalbany.org - under the “Social Justice” tab at the top of the homepage. Also posted there will be the “Seven Key Themes of Catholic Social Teaching”.

WORK OF HUMAN HANDS SALE - While we’ve had our share of extreme weather in the past few years, in other parts of the world natural disasters often occur in addition to chronic, abject poverty. How we can help isn’t always clear, but the Fair Trade Sale in the Parish Hall next weekend after Masses is a concrete way of ensuring that skilled artisans, while still poor, will not sink into destitution. They are not asking for a handout, but just that we take a little time to browse among the useful, unusual and charming products that they have created, and hopefully may purchase something. Your support affirms their dignity while overcoming the barriers that often separate us from the rest of the world. Thank you for your support!
