December 29, 2019 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Dear Parish Family,

I’ve just addressed you as “Family,” and in a very real way, that is what we are. Dictionary.com

offers fifteen different definitions of this word, ranging from “a basic social unit consisting of

parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not: the traditional

family,” to “a unit of the Mafia or Cosa Nostra operating in one area under a local leader!” I

suppose the definition that fits my use of it would be “a group of people who are generally not

blood relations but who share common attitudes, interests, or goals and frequently, live together:

Many hippie communes of the sixties regarded themselves as families!” I suppose it’s a good thing

that we do not live together, and, while I imagine a number of you are rather free-spirited, I’m not

so sure you would be considered “hippies” in the true sense of the term. Nevertheless, all of us who

make up the Catholic Community of St. Vincent de Paul profess a common belief in Jesus Christ as Lord, the Word

incarnate of God the Father, sharing a relationship with love in union with the Holy Spirit. In that sense, we are a family.

In our personal families, we experience a range of good and not-so-good. How often do we compare our own families with

those of others, thinking that ours doesn’t measure up somehow? Our families offer some of the richest experiences we can

ever have, while at the same time, in some families, some of the most painful occurrences are experienced. In reflecting on

this Sunday within the Octave of Christmas – the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph – we might wonder

how we can possibly relate to such a perfect family. To offer some reassurance here, Jesuit Father James Martin wrote on

this in light of the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, which is proclaimed at the Vigil Mass for Christmas

(Mt. 1: 1-25). This passage presents the genealogy of Jesus, “the son of David, the son of Abraham.” He writes:

You think your family is dysfunctional? Consider Jesus’s family, which we (hear about) in the Gospel of Matthew, who

gives us that wonderful long genealogy ("Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob...") that leads up to

"Joseph, who was the husband of Mary." The family tree of Jesus of Nazareth is hardly the purest of plants. Among some of

the holiest people in salvation history come some, well, not-so-holy ones.

Where to begin? Well, Tamar, whom Judah had chosen as his wife, ended up sleeping with her father-in law, i.e., Judah.

(It's more complicated and more sordid than that: check out Genesis) Rahab (who is mentioned by name in the genealogy

as the mother of Boaz) is described as a prostitute (and a liar). Ruth was born into a family that had a history of incest.

And as for David, he made sure that Uriah, a soldier in his army, was placed on the front lines so that Uriah would be

assured of dying in battle. This was done so that David, who had eyes for Uriah’s lovely wife, Bathsheba, could marry her.

Uriah did die. David married Bathsheba and they gave birth to Solomon. And so on.

The point is that all of our families are to some degree or another dysfunctional. (Note to my mother: except ours of

course.) But, with God’s grace, great good can come out of our families, no matter how messy they may seem. Remember

this during the holidays when you are tempted to lament your family tree. Remember that the parts of your family that you

think of as dirt, may be the soil that gives rise to holiness.

Jesus is often called the "“Son of David"“ and, in so many ways, so are we.

May God’s richest blessings be with you and your families, always, and in all ways.

Father Ed

What is the Society of St. Vincent

de Paul!

The society of St. Vincent de Paul is

a lay Catholic organization begun by

Blessed Frederick Ozanam in Paris in

1833 and began in the USA in 1845.

The St. Christopher Conference (Society of SVdP at our

parish) started in 1998 with St. Vincent’s mission to care

for the poor. The goal of our members (Vincentians) is to

grow in holiness through the service of those in

need.

Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic?

Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never “got around to it”. Maybe you aren’t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish Office at 512-255-1389.
