Dear Friends,1865 was a big year in US history. General Lee surrendered to the North, marking the end

of the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln was tragically assassinated. The nation had been torn

apart, and was in need of great healing. Amidst these turbulent times, Archbishop Spalding

called together 36 men to bring to Baltimore the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society,

joining a movement that had started just 32 years earlier in Paris, France by a young man

named Frederic Ozanam.

When we began our work in Baltimore in 1865, we were pioneers, initiating many of the first

works of charity in our community. Over the past 150 years, we have carried out our mission to

ensure those impacted by poverty have the skills and resources to achieve their full potential,

continuously serving the community through times of great change and challenge.

Today, as we celebrate 150 years of service to the community, we honor the work of so many

over the years who have walked in the footsteps of our founder, Frederic Ozanam, seeking to

answer the call to love and serve those who struggle from poverty. It is a call that is timeless, and

one of which Pope Francis reminded us during his recent visit to the United States.

In this very special 150th Anniversary Annual Report, we pause to Honor our Legacy,

Celebrate the Present, and Look to the Future. We honor and celebrate in particular the many

people who make our work possible, including members, donors, volunteers, and staff who

through their heart, sacrifice, commitment, service, and generosity embody the founding spirit

of Fredric Ozanam.

As we forge ahead into the future, full of anticipation and hope, we plan to continue to

be a pioneer by seeking new and innovative ways to help those in our community who are

impacted by poverty.

Thank you for joining in our mission and work at this historic moment in time, and for sharing

your gifts, talents, and blessings. We invite you to continue to be a part of our efforts in the years

to come to help those we serve, and our community, move beyond poverty.

Sincerely yours,

John J. Schiavone Glenn Falcao

St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore emerged during the time of the Civil

War. The first parish conference was founded in 1865 at the Basilica of

the Assumption in downtown Baltimore, just 32 years after the first St.

Vincent de Paul Society conference was started in Paris, France in 1833.

Guided by the examples of their patron, Saint Vincent de Paul, and the

founder of the Society, Frederic Ozanam, early members sought to live

their faith by caring for others and became pioneers in the development

of local programs to help the poor. Members attended to the very basic

needs of the poor in their area by bringing them food, clothing, and coal

to heat their homes.

For most of our history, our organization consisted of three principal

functions: parish conferences, the summer camp, and the collection

bureau/thrift store operations. In 1986, we were invited to take over

operation of Beans & Bread, a local soup kitchen founded in 1977

by Benet Hanlon.

In the decades since, we significantly expanded our community services,

adding programs focused on homeless services, employment training,

early childhood education, and healthy food access, and our annual

operating budget grew from approximately $400,000 in 1988 to over

$20 million in 2015.

Since our founding, we have always met the challenges of poverty faced

by the Baltimore region. Our presence and impact have been felt more

profoundly in recent times, as we have worked to address the complex

realities of poverty and homelessness and reach even more people with

the resources to escape poverty and improve their quality of life.

More than ever, there is a wide gap between those doing well in the

aftermath of the Great Recession and those still struggling in poverty. The

poverty rate in the U.S. remains above 15% and, in Baltimore, one in every

four people lives in poverty. There is a growing disparity between lower end

wages and the cost of living, so even those fortunate to have jobs often

aren’t earning enough to meet their basic needs.

In these times of great need, it is essential that we stay focused on what

we can accomplish, working together as a community of caring people to

provide hope to those who suffer greatly from the effects of poverty.

Today St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore provides thousands of people each

year comprehensive services with a singular focus: to ensure those impacted

by poverty have the skills and resources to achieve their full potential.

We accomplish this through thirteen programs in five service areas:

Homelessness and Supportive Housing, Child and Family Services, Workforce

Development, Access to Healthy Food, and Emergency Assistance.

This year, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of our founding. As part of

the commemoration of this historic milestone, we have embarked upon

three special anniversary year initiatives: (1) New marketing efforts to

generate increased support for our mission and work; (2) A new, mission-

focused, fundraising and awareness event called Flashlight; and (3) The

For Your Love Alone 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. These initiatives

will allow us to gather the necessary resources to propel our organization

forward and build the foundation for another 150 years of service.

This year we opened the doors to a newly renovated and

expanded Sarah’s Hope family shelter in the Sandtown-Winchester

neighborhood of Baltimore City. The $8 million project involved a

complete renovation of a three story former school building and

doubled the shelter’s capacity to 150 beds to meet increased demand,

making it the City’s largest shelter for homeless families. The

renovations created family style living units, and expanded space for

improved services that include: case management and healthcare,

adult education classes, computer access, and on-site therapeutic

child care provided by PACT. The new Sarah’s Hope allows Baltimore

City to meet the requirements of the federal HEARTH act by

accommodating families with older adolescent males, intact families,

and families headed by single fathers. A community playground and

green space is planned on the property in a second phase to be

completed in 2016.

“Homeless families need, and deserve, a temporary haven

that is safe and comfortable, allows them to attain stability, and

provides services that will return them quickly to permanent

housing and self-sufficiency,” said John Schiavone, President &

CEO of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore.

The shelter has always operated year-round at nearly 100%

capacity, and fielded many phone calls each month from

homeless families who had to be turned away due to lack of

available beds. By doubling its capacity through this expansion,

Sarah’s Hope is now expected to serve over 200 families a year.

Sarah’s Hope provides homeless families with the comprehensive

stabilization and self-sufficiency services they need to return to

permanent housing as quickly as possible.

150th Anniversary Event Celebrates Past, Present, and Future

More than 200 Parish Conference members, 1865 Legacy Society members, board, staff, volunteers, and other honored guests gathered together for a special 150th Anniversary Mass at the Basilica of the Assumption, celebrated by Archbishop William E. Lori, followed by a Brunch Reception at The Grand. At the anniversary event, St. Mary of the Assumption (Govans) and immaculate Conception/St. Cecilia were recognized as the two oldest, still-active Parish Conferences. The Catholic Church of Glen Burnie was honored as the newest parish conference. This year's Top Hat Award was presented to Mary Laber, a member of the Our Lady of the Chesapeake Conference. The Top Hat Award is the highest recognition given by the Baltimore Council and is presented to one member each year. Sr. Charmaine Krohe, SSND, founder and former Director of the St. Ambrose Center and former Board President, was the keynote speaker. She provided an inspirational talk that acknowledged the great work of the organization and its members, and challenged everyone to continue to carry on the work, tradition, and spirit of our founder.

“This project is a huge leap forward in providing resources that will have a positive impact on families struggling with poverty and homelessness in Baltimore City.” —Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

At 5 a.m. most 17 years olds would be sound asleep, scrolling

through instagram, or finishing the last of their homework they put

off. But not Lucie Amrhein. She is up making social media posts and

answering emails for her non-profit that she started seven years ago

called “Hugs from Lucie.”

Lucie’s volunteer work began at age 10 when her mom told her and

her siblings that they needed to do something to help others. Lucie

went to Build-a-Bear and donated her bear to a sick child at the Ronald

McDonald House. She saw the child’s smile, and she was hooked. This

led to Lucie forming a non-profit organization to continue to help. This

year, Lucie’s non-profit will give away nearly 1,000 bears and other

comfort items and necessities to children at hospitals. She is now

expanding to serve the homeless children staying at Sarah’s Hope.

Lucie was introduced to St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore when she

volunteered last summer as a camp counselor at Camp St. Vincent.

Camp was “life changing,” she said. it gave her an opportunity to

make an impact on children who were not sick, but in a different

unfortunate circumstance – homelessness. Lucie got very close with

one child in particular, Daniel, who was staying at Sarah’s Hope. it

inspired her to bring “Hugs from Lucie” to the children of Sarah’s

Hope, and she plans to volunteer there monthly leading fun activities

and donating needed items.

When Lucie arrived at Sarah’s Hope for the first time to volunteer,

she was both happy and sad not to find Daniel there. “i found out he

had been housed,” she said with tears in her eyes. “i am so thrilled for

him. it is a good thing if i don’t see a sick or homeless child again.”

“i love doing this work and seeing the impact it has,” said Lucie. “i will

continue to try to inspire others to get involved and make a difference.”

Celebrating 150 Years

A FRESH NEW STARTStephon, Next Course Graduate

As a young child, Stephon always helped his mom cook. At age

15, he got his first job working in a kitchen. Trying to stay on the

right path, Stephon played sports and worked hard in school to

keep the call of the streets at bay. But coming from a single-

parent household in a poverty stricken area of Baltimore City,

he and his mom had to do all they could to survive. in his early

20s, Stephon got mixed up with the wrong crowd, doing the

wrong things, and ended up in prison.

Upon his release, Stephon was determined to get his

life back on track. But having a record can be a barrier for

employment, even for those determined to follow the right

path. Stephon found opportunity and a fresh new start at Next

Course, our food service training program for adults with

barriers to employment. Stephon’s knowledge of kitchens and

passion for cooking made him a star student.

“i wanted a career, not just a job,” Stephon said. “i was so

happy being at Next Course and working with all of the staff.

When i was there, it was like i was home.”

Today you can find Stephon happy as ever with his life

moving in the right direction. He recently graduated from Next

Course and is looking for a full-time career with the assistance

of our Employment Developer. He is engaged to his long-time

sweetheart and has plans to buy a house. He has become more

spiritual and, as an avid runner, plans to run a marathon in the

spring. “You have to learn from your mistakes and move on,”

said Stephon, “but always try to do better.”

Employment— The Best Way to Move Beyond Poverty

Through our employment services, our goal is to help both the unemployed and underemployed secure employment that provides self-sufficiency and a secure career path.

Our Next Course training program provides individuals that have barriers to employment with extensive food service skills, as well as the opportunity to obtain the ServSafe Food Handlers Certificate. The intensive 15 week training program is integrated into our KidzTable social enterprise, a production kitchen providing over six thousand quality meals to Head Start programs, daycares, shelters, and after school programs throughout the Baltimore area daily. Job placement assistance is provided to all Next Course graduates.

Celebrating 150 Years“This is a program with such a passion to support people.”

Michael owned his own landscaping company that was very

successful when, unfortunately, he contracted Lyme Disease. He

became very ill, and was unable to work for nearly two years. His

medical bills piled up and he lost his home. After moving around

from apartment to apartment with friends and family, and piecing

together odd jobs and part-time work, he still couldn’t catch up and

was out of options.

Desperate and facing homelessness, Michael turned to a social

worker at his son’s school, and was referred to Front Door, our

rapid re-housing and shelter diversion program. Front Door

specializes in serving individuals and families who experience

“episodic homelessness,” whereby things like divorce, health

condition, or job loss cause a financial crisis that results in them

losing their home.

For Michael and his son, the program was a “life saver.” Through

the shelter diversion program, he and his son stayed in a hotel

for less than 20 days while he and the Front Door staff worked

together to find an apartment that he could sustain. Michael

received six months of rental assistance, funds for his security

deposit, funds to help with BGE arrearages, furniture, and items to

equip his new home like cookware, sheets, and towels.

“At that point, i felt like there was hope,” Michael said. “it is

great to know that there are programs with such a passion to

support people, without judging or putting up limits.”

Michael is now working full-time and is financially stable,

enabling him to maintain his new apartment that he shares with

his son.

There’s No Place Like Home – Unless You Don’t Have One

Minimizing the length of time individuals and families are living on the streets or in shelters is key to avoiding the long-term, negative effects of homelessness on both adults and children. For this reason, re-housing is always the immediate and central focus of all of our homeless services.  We employ best practices that involve short-term interventions such as brief shelter stays to achieve stability, coupled with intensive case management, support services and housing placement.

Front Door is a rapid re-housing and shelter diversion program that provides short-term rental assistance, case management, adult education, and employment services to help homeless individuals and families avoid going to shelters and, for those in shelters, to become re-housed quickly in permanent, market-rate housing.

CALLED TO SERVE Pauline Manalo, Board Member and Parish Conference Volunteer

Pauline Manalo began serving others as a young child when

she volunteered with her mother and grandmother in her

native country, the Philippines. She attended schools run by

the Daughters of Charity, and would accompany the nuns on

the weekends for visits to the homeless. Pauline’s volunteer

service stayed with her even when she moved to the United

States and started a family. She became a catechist at her

parish, St. John the Evangelist in Frederick, Maryland, where

she was introduced to the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Parish

Conference there. After her husband died at a young age,

she answered a call to volunteer with the Parish Conference,

delivering emergency resources to the needy in the community.

in less than a year she became president of the St. John’s

Parish Conference, setting new standards for services and

increasing membership to ensure quality service. Pauline’s

leadership abilities led her to become chair of the Baltimore

Council Parish Affairs Committee. She later assumed a seat

on the Board of Directors of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore,

and eventually became Vice President. This past year she

became President of the Council Board, which oversees all

38 Parish Conferences. The past 20 years she has helped

hundreds of people, but she is still not done. “it is a vocation

to me, not just volunteer service,” she said. “We see the face

of Christ in the poor.”

“i remember my husband saying that he liked to donate to

organizations that help people move out of poverty,” Pauline

recalled. “That is my motivation to revitalize the good work of

the Parish Conferences and volunteers. My goal is to help them

deliver services in the spirit of our founder, Frederic Ozanam,

and address the structures that keep people in poverty.”

“We see the face of Christ in the poor.”

A Network of Support for Neighbors in Need

More than 765 volunteer members at 38 parish-based St. Vincent de Paul Conferences provide a network of support for people suffering from the effects of poverty. Serving in a spirit of charity, humility, and friendship, Conference members provide food, utility and rent assistance, and other items of necessity to help neighbors in need through difficult times, while offering advocacy and referrals to appropriate human services agencies.

Each day, throughout the world, hundreds of thousands of men and

women step into the path of social distress, determined to restore dignity

and hope to the less fortunate around them. In a very real sense, every

individual working in the field of social welfare follows in the footsteps of

Saint Vincent de Paul.

Honoring the great legacy of our organization locally, and through our

connection to Saint Vincent de Paul, is very important. However, we must at

the same time look to the future, and endeavor to improve and expand our

work and impact here in Baltimore.

We believe in the Baltimore community, its citizens, and the power to effect

positive change even in our most distressed areas, working in partnership

with local government, other agencies, congregations and organizations, and

with the help of our donors and dedicated volunteers and staff.

In the coming years, we will continue to build a healthy and vibrant

organization, growing in four key service areas: homelessness and supportive

housing, workforce development, child and family services, and access to

healthy food. This growth will require critical investments in organizational

infrastructure and capacity, some of which is already underway thanks to

funding from our For Your Love Alone 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign.

For 150 years, St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore has been carrying out its

mission to ensure those impacted by poverty have the skills and resources

to achieve their full potential. We are proud of our long and distinguished

history of serving the community through times of great change and

challenge, and look forward to continuing to do so with the help of caring

community members and supporters like you.

We hope you will continue to support our efforts to help individuals and

families in our community move beyond poverty.

Celebrating 150 Years

Kevin Meyd was introduced to charity and helping others at a

young age. Kevin’s father, Joseph Meyd, was involved in the

St. Vincent de Paul Parish Conference at St. Agnes in the 1960s.

“That left a mark on me, even into adulthood,” Kevin said. “i

know i have been blessed, and i think of my dad and i know i

can do something to help.”

Kevin’s father was part of his motivation for joining the

St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore Board of Directors in 1999.

He served as Board Chair from 2003 to 2009, leading the

organization through a time of great change. During his tenure

the organization grew substantially in both scope and size.

When he left the board 10 years later, the organization had

grown to become a leading non-profit in the Baltimore area.

Kevin continues his service to the organization to this day,

donating regularly and serving on the 150th Anniversary Capital

Campaign committee to encourage others to give as well. “i

feel like the organization is in a good place,” Kevin said. “i know

it will continue to grow in its ability to serve people struggling

with poverty. What sets the organization apart is the caring

atmosphere, the attention to each and every client, and always

working to take them beyond whatever situation they are

struggling with.”

As a successful executive for T. Rowe Price and Baltimore

area resident, Kevin encourages others to get involved and give.

“Knowing the need in Baltimore, particularly on the heels of the

recent riots and unrest, now is the time for people to support

non-profits really making a difference in our local community.”
