SPRC: Changes Made to Date - Overview
Architecture
• Revised the roof top element to incorporate a perforated metal panel screen wall and metal canopy that overhangs
the penthouse and down the south façade.
• Added blue accent lighting in roof top canopy and vertical screen wall
• Moved penthouse back an additional 3’ from south façade (5’ total set-back)
• Revised design of west façade to incorporate elements from the east façade and to recall elements
of the original Blue Goose building west facade
• Added articulation to north façade at garage exhaust shaft and louver to incorporate Terra Cotta “baguettes”
• Revised the first floor plan to get retail space at the SE corner and a service corridor connecting it to the loading dock.
• Created new retail entry on Fairfax Drive with blue metal façade panels and canopy for the Blue Goose Café
• Shared concept for the Blue Goose Café interior.
• Added blue spandrel glass band at second floor slab at portion of east and south facade
• Added articulation to penthouse facade
• Changed metal doors to sectional glass doors for loading and garage entry
• Raised 1st Floor slab elevations to eliminate all steps outside the building

Landscape• Corner plaza re-conceptualized from a series of modular bioretention planters with seat walls (SPRC 1) to landscape panels (SPRC 2).
• Corner plaza refinement of landscape panels, including introduction of landforms (SPRC 3).
• Corner plaza re-conceptualized to include alternate pedestrian flow with diffused hardscape edge treatments (post-SPRC 4).
• Relocation of residential garage entry from Glebe to Wakefield.
• Added parking spaces on Wakefield Street
• Introduction of Blue Goose Café seating in corner plaza.
• Refinement of bus shelter location (SPRC 4) and interface with shuttle stop (post-SPRC 4).
• Refinement of grade change relative to stairs and ramps.
• Refinement to “Pedestrian Realm” definition on streetscapes.
• Introduction of cycle track.
• Incorporating additional street trees: +2 on Fairfax, +1 on Glebe (possibly an additional after yesterday), +1 on Wakefield
• Additional trees within site: +2 at corner of Wakefield & Fairfax, +2 at interior courtyard, +4 at corner plaza (currently).
SPRC: Changes Made to Date - Overview (Continued)
Residential• Moved Vehicular entry from N. Glebe to Wakefield (thus losing parking spaces)
• Added Retail (thus having to move residential lobby entry and reducing number of dwelling units)
• Moved building 5’-0” west to open view corridor to corner (thus reducing courtyard space for residents)
MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY BALLSTON CENTER 09 December 2013 SPRC #6 31
Landscape (Cont.)• Corner plaza re-conceptualize from a series of landscape panels with immediate geometric relationship to the architectural expression of both build
ings (SPRC 2-4) to a plaza defined by a continuous paving design from façade to curb, interrupted with planting areas informed by a perforated hard
scape edge and a looser (curvilinear) definition of back of sidewalk (SPRC 5), to a reinterpretation of the planting areas as autonomous forms that in
turn promote pedestrian movement through the plaza.
• Introduction of a sweeping paving treatment weaving pedestrian circulation through the site with connections along the streetscape. Paving treat
ment is intended to be a subtle change from the overall paving field.
• Introduction of circular benches/spaces acting as highly defined gathering spaces. Each of the three spaces has a different orientation and exposure.
• Introduction of monolithic type benches along the streetscape for impromptu seating in a sunny location. Such benches are also located near the
Marymount entrance. Collectively they provide one type of seating on the perimeter of the plaza plantings.
• Refinement of the low retaining walls along Glebe streetscape (see Historical Reference below) with a curving profile with a maximum height of 2’.
• Refinement to the location of turf landform abutting low retaining wall (above).
• Introduction of short light fixtures casting light along the pedestrian network within the plaza.
• Grouping the trees within the plaza in lieu of a geometric arrangement. The shade trees at the café seating maintain a geometric arrangement de
rived from the architecture.
