Niagara Falls: An enduring state parkAmerica is home to hundreds of national parks, state parks, national monuments, and recre-ational areas of special distinction. Niagara Falls holds the honor of being the oldest state park in the United States, and still garners millions of visitors each and every year.
Niagara Falls wasn’t always the landmark and state park it is today. In the early 19th century, industrialists built mills and factories along the coast of the falls to harness the powerful energy of the water. In turn, the natural beauty of the area started to wane.
Not wanting the falls to be decimated by industry, some enterprising people decided to start an
organization to preserve the integrity and beauty of the falls and surrounding lands. They formed the Free Niagara movement in the mid 1800s, urging New York State to take back the Niagara Falls area. One of the pivotal people in the movement was Frederick Law Olmstead, the land-scape architect who designed New York City’s famed Central Park.
It took 15 years of pressure by the Free Niagara movement to fi nally have a law passed setting aside the lands of the falls as a recreational area and reservation.
Niagara Falls is actually quite young in terms of waterfall creation. Historians say the falls de-veloped at the end of the Ice Age, about 12,000 years ago. Native Americans were probably the fi rst people to witness the awe of the falls.
The falls actually consist of three different waterfalls: The American Falls, between Prospect Point and Luna Island; Bridal Veil Falls, between Luna Island and Goat Island; and Horseshoe Falls.
Although views of the falls are magnifi cent from many locations, many people venture over the border into Canada for some of the best views, particularly of Horseshoe falls. Niagara Falls is the second largest falls on Earth next to Victoria Falls in Africa. American tourists who will be traveling into Canada need a form of identifi cation, such as a passport or drivers licence, to en-ter. Upon return, U.S. Border offi cials will require a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced drivers license. Visit www.cbp.gov to learn more about U.S. Border policies.
It is estimated that 15 million tourists visit the falls every year. It’s also a popular site for wed-dings and honeymoons. The offi cial Web site for Niagara Falls (www.niagarafallsstatepark.com) states that 3,160 tons of water fl ows over the falls every second.
Whether a trip to Niagara Falls State Park is for a wedding, honeymoon or simply to take in the majesty of the falls, most tourists are not disappointed by the spectacle that awaits.

What to look for in a reception venueEngaged couples must make assorted important decisions with regards to their wedding day. For some, the process of planning a wedding can be overwhelming, while others revel in each and every deci-sion.
Among the many decisions couples must make is which venue to use for their recep-tion. The wedding reception venue is where most of the day will be spent, and where the majority of the people will do their mingling. When looking for a wedding venue, there are a number factors to take into consideration.
The Accommodations
The facility itself should be able to accommodate the wedding size. Some weddings are gran-diose events with large guests lists, while others are more understated and intimate, with only a small number of family and friends in attendance. Couples should know which type of wedding they will be having, and should have at least an estimate fi gure in mind of the number of guests before visiting any facilities. Once that estimate has been made, look for a facility that can com-fortably accommodate that number of people, and ideally fi nd one that has a done so in the past. Couples won’t want a facility where everyone is crammed together, nor will they want one where a relatively small number of guests are in a large ballroom with lots of empty space.
More minor details regarding the facility must also be considered. Ask if the facility is handi-capped accessible. If the wedding is in the warmer months, make sure the venue is air condi-tioned. Since most weddings have a break in between the ceremony and the reception, ask if the facility has a room in which the bride and groom can freshen up before the reception begins.
The Date
Couples may choose the date of their wedding based on the availability of a church they attend or a specifi c wedding offi ciant they want to perform their ceremony. Once that date has been chosen, it’s time to look for a reception venue. Couples who have a specifi c venue in mind might want to ask about the venue’s availability before settling on a wedding date. When seeking out a reception venue, ask if the venue has any other events scheduled for that day. Some couples prefer to have the facility all to themselves and their guests.
The Location
The facility’s location should be a priority. Couples won’t want their guests to have to drive too far from the wedding ceremony to the reception venue or from the reception venue back to the hotel. Since many wedding guests come from out of town, they likely won’t know the area well and could get lost if the facility is too far away from their hotel. Keep things simple by fi nding a reception venue that’s close to the hotel or hotels where guests will be staying.
The Hours
Couples who want their receptions to last into the wee hours should inquire about the facility’s hourly rate. A typical reception lasts fi ve or six hours. If couples want to go beyond that, they might have to pay an hourly rate. Ask if the facility charges an hourly rate or if the venue can simply be rented for as long as the party keeps going.
The Price
Many facilities offer a fl at rate to rent the venue. When discussing the rate, be sure to ask what’s included. Will food, fl owers, venue decor, and even staff tips be included in the rental fee? If not, is there room for negotiation? When facilities expand the services they include in their rental fee,
that can save couples substantial amounts of money.
When choosing a reception venue, couples must consider a host of factors that stretch beyond a venue’s aesthetic appeal.
