Off we went to just outside of Cumberland to a little country town call Corriganville. There we met up with Leo, a spry gentlemen in his eighties, who gladly gave us a tour of his families pride and joy. Leo is a great talker and he certainly kept us interested, telling and showing us everything about making maple syrup. He showed us the old fashioned way to tap trees and explained the modern method. He liked the old tap and bucket best and he still uses them today. He explained how tempera- ture, wind and rain effect production. Leo even demonstrated his sugar meter, everyone was looking at the blue lines in the gauge, however, one of us had some trouble. We accused her of being blind the rest of the day. Then out of the field and into the cooking room. First, the reverse osmosis machine that removes over 50% of the water from the trees nectar. This speeds up the process and reduces the possibility of burning the syrup. Then the boiler where the nectar is cooked down to the final product, sweet all natural Maryland syrup. Although the boiler was manufac- tured, Leo had installed some of his own ideas in the system to improve productivity and reduce cost. Hes a pretty smart old country boy. Now off to the pack- aging room where the syrup is bottled. A unique filtering device that heats the syrup and then forces it through 17 fil- ters before hitting the bottles. Man is that stuff pure. Finally, off to the sales room, or more accu- rately put, the storage closet where we were able to purchase his product. If you havent had any, you are sure missing the best syrup you will ever put in your mouth. Leo made us promise to stop by on our travels with the bikes for a visit sometime. Syrup is available for purchase year round. Now hungry, we headed to my local fa- vorite, DeAtries for some really good grub, my favorite is the steak and cheese, and fellowship We ended the day at a little surplus store I like in La-Valle, they have anything and everything you may need. Men stuff and women stuff too. We also heard that they all made friends with this adorable puppy at the gas station. And they all had trouble letting him there, but as I understand he is a very good buddy to a little boy. Thank you Jeff & Patsy for leading the ride and making it a good day for all. Ron & Sharon

S&S Maple Camp Tour

On March 2nd we took a trip to S&S Sugar Maple in Corriganville. The Retreads are always anxious to start a new riding season and 2019 is no exception. Patsy coordinated a visit with Leo and the S&S Sug-ar Maple camp. The time was right for the trees, so Saturday morning four car loads of Re-treads head-ed to Corriganville Maryland. A nice day for a drive. Off we went to just outside of Cumberland to a little country town call Corriganville. Oh What Fun We Had!!!! On Saturday March 16th we had our annual bowling out-

ing, we had a very good turnout 19 Retreads in all came to the bowling alley, 14 of us bowled and we have 5 spec-tators cheering us on (or laugh-ing at us). It was

a great afternoon. We did have 1 first time ever bowler and that was Dottie, she did pretty well for herself. Some of us were a little stiff the next day, but what the heck we had a good time. Thanks to Lynn & Au-gie for setting this up for us.

Congratulations Ron & I were the winners of the door prize (which was a total surprise to us), Lynn & Augie. and our guests Sid & Tess were the winners of the 50/50. Sid & Tess wanted to donate their back to our charities. Thank you.

Thank you for your Donations We had a good turnout of pet food, blankets, towels and even toys to be given to the Washington County Humane Society. Dottie dropped the items off and they were very grateful to receive these items. Thank you all very much for the donations.

Dinner Outs

On March 16th, after our bowling outing 17 Retreads headed to Mission BBQ in Hagerstown for some delicious food. It just so happened that it was Rick Baum’s birthday and Joanne brought cupcakes for everyone, we all enjoyed cupcakes and sang Happy Birthday to Rick, what a nice end to a great after-noon. Thank you Joanne for the cup-cakes they were delicious.
