For two centuries, mariners have trusted the high quali‐ty of Bri sh Admiralty charts. Maryland Nau cal Sales has provided their clients with these reliable products, and has just been approved to offer fully‐updated Print on Demand Bri sh Admiralty charts, produced at MNS Bal more headquarters. MNS representa ves Charles Singer and Eric Beswick recently visited the U.K. Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in Taunton, England to finalize the Print on Demand (POD) arrangements. UKHO produces and maintains the Bri sh Admiralty (BA) charts and product line, and enforces ex‐ac ng standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the products. Cloud‐based, encrypted POD capability is authorized for a very select number of chart agents with proven creden als, including ISO 9001 cer fica on.
As Interna onal Admiralty Chart Agents, MNS car‐tographers have thus far hand‐corrected BA charts using Admiralty No ce to Mariners before distrib‐u ng them to their clients. MNS will phase opera‐ons from hand‐correc on to POD in accordance
with BA requirements. Singer notes "POD allows us to offer our mariner clients highly reliable Bri sh Admiralty charts on very short no ce. Our mission, and that of the UKHO, is safety of life at sea."

Maryland Nau cal is now officially prin ng and distribu ng NOAA's Print‐on‐Demand United States Coast Pilot® series Volumes 1 ‐ 9.
All books are printed with the most current correc ons and bound in book form. Mariners will be able to print the weekly updates as they are available from the weekly No ce to Mariners.
Tradi onally, U.S. Coast Pilot volumes have been printed annually in quan ty, then stored and sold via retail sales agents. This method resulted in the sale of a gradually obsolete product, as a mariner might purchase a new volume that would require a year's worth of weekly correc ons to comply with feder‐al carriage regula ons.
To improve this process, NOAA has implemented Print‐on‐Demand technolo‐gy. NOAA updates the U.S. Coast Pilot volumes weekly and provides digital versions in PDF format to Maryland Nau cal who will then print from the up‐to‐date files as copies are ordered.
The UK trip included a visit to the Interna onal Mari me Organi‐za on (IMO) in London to discuss the IMO Bookshelf, now availa‐ble from Maryland Nau cal Sales. IMO Bookshelf is a CD con‐taining e‐reader so ware and IMO e‐reader digital tles. Users purchase an ac va on code to unlock the tles of choice. Con‐tents can be searched, printed, resized and bookmarked. IMO Bookshelf essen ally reduces a shelf full of required IMO tles to a single CD.

In 1931, 17 year old seaman John Hart went to sea for the first me . A er 18 years he came ashore working as a compass adjuster at the Bal more branch of Wilfred O. White and Sons.
Wilfred came from a shipbuilding family da ng back to 15th century Eng‐land. Born in Melbourne Australia, Mr. White came to the United States in 1898 and married Ruth Eldridge, the daughter of George Eldridge, who charted the first de and current tables in the U.S. The White family started a small nau cal instrument dealership which became Wilfred O. White and Sons .
Captain Hart showed a quick grasp of the retail business, greatly expanding the inventory at Wilfred O. White. Captain Hart purchased the Bal more branch in 1957, changing the name to Maryland Nau cal Sales, Inc.
In 1975, he sold Maryland Nau cal Sales to William Bridges and his son, who operated the business at the downtown Bal more loca on. In 1986, the compa‐ny was purchased by Robert and Brian Davis, who moved the business to Hull Street in the old Port of Bal more neighborhood of Locust Point.
In 1993, Maryland Nau cal (and its affiliates, Davis Ship Service, Inc. and The Davis Group, Inc.) were moved four blocks to its present loca on on E. Clement St. ‐ 7,000 sq. . facility with addi onal storage, parking and an expanded show‐room.
As a supplier of worldwide charts and publica ons of the U.K. Hydrographic Office (Bri sh Admiralty) since 1987, Mary‐land Nau cal was granted “Interna onal Admiralty Chart Agent" status by the UKHO in 1999, and is now authorized to produce Print on Demand charts.

Maryland Nau cal Sales a ains ISO 9001 Cer fica on On August 9th, Maryland Nau cal Sales was audited onsite by the Independent Cer fica on Body IMSM and cer fied to the ISO 9001:2008 standard. Maryland Nau cal’s Procedures, Processes, Sales and Management Prac ces were thor‐oughly reviewed and assessed and found to be fully compliant with the require‐ments of the ISO Standard. Maryland Nau cal Sales has the dis nc on of being the first US‐based chart agent to be ISO cer fied. The ISO 9001:2008 standard establishes the base criteria for Maryland Nau cal’s Quality Management System. It encompasses all areas of MNS, including people, services and processes, and streamlines the en re opera on. MNS President Bob
Davis indicates that MNS has been deeply involved in the cer fica on process for the past 4 months. Through the prep‐ara on, MNS discovered that they were already implemen ng 80% of the ISO required processes. However, they were not recording and tracking these processes to find areas of improvement. Davis notes “our primary mo va on was improved customer service, and ISO 9001 cer fica on ensures our con nual process improvement.”

What Customers are saying... I have worked on 4 differ‐ent ARC ships in the past 1‐1/2 years (Liberty, Honor, Patriot, and Independence II). All 4 vessels have their chart services supplied by Maryland Nau cal. On
each ship, we have required assistance from MNS for different reasons. Our point of contact in each instance was Eric Beswick.
