  • 2 “Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness.” - Mother Teresa February 3, 2019

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: We have just concluded Catholic Schools Week here in the Archdiocese. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful school here at Mary Star. Our Pre-School, Elementary, and High School continue to past on to our youth the Foundation of our Faith coupled with the highest standards of Academic Excellence. I am so grateful to our Priests, Principals, Teachers, and Staff who make our Mary Star school here in San Pedro a Light to the World. Below you will find a brief discussion by Saint John Paul II on Christ as the True Light of the World. Have a Blessed Week.

    Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor

“Jesus Christ is the True Light of the World.” - Saint John Paul II

We are all called to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, “the true light that enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9), people become “light in the Lord” and “children of light” (Eph 5:8), and are made holy by “obedience to the truth” (1 Pet 1:22).

This obedience is not always easy. As a result of that mysterious original sin, committed at the prompting of Satan, the one who is “a liar and the father of lies” (Jn 8:44), man is constantly tempted to turn his gaze away from the living and true God in order to direct it towards idols (cf. 1 Thes 1:9), exchanging “the truth about God for a lie” (Rom 1:25). Man’s capacity to know the truth is also darkened, and his will to submit to it is weakened. Thus, giving himself over to relativism and skepticism (cf. Jn 18:38), he goes off in search of an illusory freedom apart from truth itself.

But no darkness of error or of sin can totally take away from man the light of God the Creator. In the depths of his heart there always remains a yearning for absolute truth and a thirst to attain full knowledge of it. This is eloquently proved by man’s tireless search for knowledge in all fields. It is proved even more by his search for the meaning of life. The development of science and technology, this splendid testimony of the human capacity for understanding and for perseverance, does not free humanity from the obligation to ask the ultimate religious questions. Rather, it spurs us on to face the most painful and decisive of struggles, those of the heart and of the moral conscience.

The light of God’s face shines in all its beauty on the countenance of Jesus Christ, “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15), the “reflection of God’s glory” (Heb 1:3), “full of grace and truth” (Jn 1:14). Christ is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6). Consequently the decisive answer to every one of man’s questions, his religious and moral questions in particular, is given by Jesus Christ, or rather is Jesus Christ himself, as the Second Vatican Council recalls: “In fact, it is only in the mystery of the Word incarnate that light is shed on the mystery of man. For Adam, the first man, was a figure of the future man, namely, of Christ the Lord. It is Christ, the last Adam, who fully discloses man to himself and unfolds his noble calling by revealing the mystery of the Father and the Father’s love”.

Jesus Christ, the “light of the nations”, shines upon the face of his Church, which he sends forth to the whole world to proclaim the Gospel to every creature (cf. Mk 16:15). Hence the Church, as the People of God among the nations, while attentive to the new challenges of history and to mankind’s efforts to discover the meaning of life, offers to everyone the answer which comes from the truth about Jesus Christ and his Gospel. The Church remains deeply conscious of her “duty in every age of examining the signs of the times and interpreting them in the light of the Gospel, so that she can offer in a manner appropriate to each generation replies to the continual human questionings on the meaning of this life and the life to come and on how they are related.” – from Veritatis Splendor (1993).

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Community,

Last weekend, Mary Star of the Sea Elementary held its 17th annual Vegas Night Gala and it was a huge success! The event was attended by over 240 of our families, friends and parishioners that helped raise money to support our students and school. The Boot Scootin Western Night theme was fun, the food was fantastic and the games exciting. Thank you to all those who attended, the local businesses and individuals that donated, to our Parent Board, Consultative Board, the many volunteers, our faculty and staff and of course, our pastor, Fr Harrigan. This past week was Catholic Schools Week in the Archdiocese and we are so proud of our students, families and faculty that make MSSE so special. On Sunday, February 24, from 9am to 1pm, we will be hosting an Open House. All are invited to come meet the staff, see the classrooms and talk with our students. We are offering a special invitation to our fellow parishioners with children in Religious Education. Please come see how truly affordable a full-time Catholic education can be. God bless!

  • February 3, 2019 “Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself. ” - Desiderius Erasmus 7

In today’s gospel all who heard Jesus speak were “amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.” His neighbors in Nazareth were thrilled with the miracles he had

performed elsewhere but they were blinded by the fact that they see him just as “Joseph’s son” and not as the Messiah and Son of God. They were enraged when he suggested that God’s favor rests on those outside Israel, the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian who are both Gentiles. Jesus is telling them that he is a messenger of good news for the whole world and especially for the vulnerable – his ministry is for everyone. They respond with anger, and as a group they rise up and try to kill him. This story challenges us to examine our ideas and be amazed at the gracious workings of God. The amazing thing we discover about God is that God never, ever gives up on you and me or the world he created. God is patient, endlessly patient and kind toward us and challenges us to be same for everyone.
