Sometimes you just have to laugh…

Joy is often the forgotten virtue of the Christian. This week we celebrate the feast day of St. Lawrence, who was a deacon in the early Church. As we know, the Church in its early centuries faced a great deal of opposition from civil authorities. Our friend Lawrence was in charge of managing the financial means of the Church which were used to care for the poor and the

sick. When the Roman prefect heard that this was going on, he found Lawrence and told him to turn over the treasures of the Church. Lawrence told the official that he would need some time to gather up all the riches to hand over. The Roman prefect must have suspected that ‘good things come to those who wait,’ so allowed Lawrence time to gather up these valuables to hand over.

Realizing that the true treasures of Christ’s Church were the poor and those in need, Lawrence went about gathering the sick, the lame and the outcast around Rome. After 3 days of gathering the Church’s “treasures,” he presented them to the Roman prefect with great zeal declaring: “These are the greatest treasures of Christ’s Church!” Well, the prefect did not think this was terribly funny and especially didn’t appreciate Lawrence’s lesson in Christian values. Long story short, Lawrence soon after found himself being grilled alive over an open flame for his civil disobedience. And in a last dig to his persecutors announced to his torturers “I’m done on that side, it’s time to turn me over!”

Now what I love about St. Lawrence’s story of martyrdom is that even in the midst of great pain and torture for his faith, he found a way to look at the lighter side of things. There are definitely times in life that require serious attitudes, but there are other times that all one can do is to laugh, sometimes just to keep from crying. And best of all, Holy Mother Church, in her immense wisdom and good humor, has deemed St. Lawrence to be the patron not only of the poor, but more importantly of cooks and comedians.

God Bless, Father Mark Pavlik

Due to all the uncertainty surrounding COVID 19, our Annual Fall Festival will look different this year. After much contemplation, a decision has

been made to take the year off from gathering on church grounds for the Festival.

The Fall Festival is our only parish-wide fundraiser each year. We will be having the main raffle drawing only. The raffle drawing will take place on Sunday, September 27.

This year we will reduce the number of tickets to 30 for each family to sell or purchase, however, we have increased the ticket price to $10/ticket. By doing this we hope to reduce printing and postage costs as well as offset the loss of revenue for silent auction, farmers market, games, etc.. Please expect to receive your packet of tickets in the mail soon. If you have questions or would like to donate to the cash raffle, please contact Neva Gullickson at [email protected].

MASKS REQUIRED AT MQP

Per Executive Order 20-81,

which was sign by Governor Walz

Wednesday, July 22, a protective mask is required

indoor at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church and School.

Woman of the Parish —

Are you called to the

Seven Sisters Apostolate?

The Seven Sisters Apostolate is a call to strengthen the Church by ensuring that a Holy Hour is prayed each day of the week for the sole intention of a specific priest or bishop—a “holy wasting” (cf. Mt. 26:10) or lavishing of prayer for his deeper conformity to Christ.

Mary Queen of Peace is proud to be a member of the Seven Sisters Apostolate; a group of 7 woman who commit to offer a Holy Hour exclusively for our pastor, Father Pavlik, each on a distinct day of the week, thus covering a complete week.

What is asked of a Seven Sister?

1. Keep the commitment to a Holy Hour on your designated day of the Week in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. 2. Pray only for the Pastor 3. Pray for a deepening devotion to Mary for the priest for whom you pray.

Although the Adoration Chapel is closed on Saturday and Sunday, Jesus is still present! You are welcome to pray for Father Pavlik in the Adoration Chapel on your assigned day. You can also arrive an hour early, or stay an hour later at one of the Masses on the weekend.

If you are unable to fulfill your commitment, there are 6 other Sisters you can count on to help out, or there is a list of substitutes you can call.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the 7 Sisters Apostolate at Mary Queen of Peace, or would like to serve as a substitute, please email:

Jane Whelan [email protected].
