PRUDENT AND IMPRUDENT In the common language "prudence" means sanity, good sense, tact, cau-tion. But things change when we talk about prudence as a virtue. Because the virtue of Prudence is much more than that. So important is this virtue that the Bible quotes it several times and Jesus Christ presents it to us as a requirement to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, when he tells us the famous parable of the foolish virgins. Jesus Christ comes suddenly to call his Eternal Feast. And all of us are represented by the ten young people. Five of the girls were prudent and five were careless. The prudent had enough oil to keep the lamps lit; the other five were left without oil and could not enter the Celestial Banquet. We must be prudent, because our life here on earth is the ante-room for that Eternal Feast. We are all invited, but to be able to enter we have to be pre-pared with lamps filled with the oil of good works and virtues. We have to be "prudent" ... And what is that? Prudence consists of knowing what we should do or not do in each situation of our life. In other words: it is making good decisions. But watch out! every decision must be made with a view to attaining eternal life. Nothing less! That is to say: Prudence is like the guide that leads us to the Celestial Banquet. Examples: the prudent person knows how to apply the experi-ences of the past to the present moment and knows how to decide in the present moment what is good or bad, convenient or inconvenient, licit or illicit. And those decisions he makes with a sense of eternity: how each decision influences my entrance to the Celestial Banquet. The prudent person knows how to decide "prudently" both in urgent cases -when it is not possible to stop in a long examination- and in non-urgent cases -when he can make a reflection with more time. An important feature of the prudent person is that he asks for advice from wise people, and, if necessary, accepts correction when they are done. The prudent person avoids sin and - even better - avoids the temptation to sin, because he knows that these are obstacles that can endan-ger his ultimate goal, which is salvation. The opposite of Prudence is carelessness, imprudence. How are the imprudent? They are those who do not take into account their ultimate purpose and often act on a whim and with haste. They are also inconstant and for any reason abandon the path of salvation. The main principle for imprudence, however, is to give a reck-less overvaluation to earthly things. Spiritual imprudent ones can be very careful for the things of this world, but very careless for the things that have to do with eternal life. The prudent will enter the Celestial Banquet and the impru-dent will have to hear the sentence that the Lord gives us at the end of this parable: "I do not know them". To avoid this, one must always be prudently prepared, "because they know neither the day nor the hour." Amen.

PRUDENTES E IMPRUDENTES

En el lenguaje común “prudencia” significa cordura, sensatez, tacto, cautela. Pero la cosa cambia cuando hablamos de la prudencia como virtud. Porque la virtud de la Prudencia es muchísimo más que eso. Tan importante es esta virtud que la Biblia la cita en varias oportunidades y Jesucristo nos la presenta como un requerimiento para entrar al Reino de los Cielos, cuando nos cuenta la famosa parábola de las vírgenes necias. Jesucristo llega de improviso a llamar a su Banquete Eterno. Y todos nosotros estamos representados por las diez jóvenes. Cinco de las jóvenes eran prudentes y cinco eran descuidadas. Las prudentes tenían suficiente aceite para tener las lámparas encendidas; las otras cinco se que-daron sin aceite y no pudieron entrar al Banquete Celestial. Hay que ser prudentes, porque nuestra vida aquí en la tierra es la ante-sala para esa Fiesta Eterna. Estamos todos invitados, pero para poder entrar tenemos que estar preparados con lámparas llenas del aceite de bue-nas obras y de virtudes. Tenemos que ser “prudentes”… ¿Y qué es eso? La Prudencia consiste en saber lo que debemos hacer o dejar de hacer en cada situación de nuestra vida. En otras palabras: es tomar buenas decisiones. Pero ¡ojo! cada decisión debe ser hecha con miras a alcanzar la vida eterna. ¡Nada menos! Es decir: la Prudencia es como la guía que nos lleva al Banquete Celestial. Ejemplos: la persona prudente sabe aplicar las experiencias del pasado al momento presente y sabe decidir en el momento presente lo que es bueno o malo, conveniente o inconveniente, lícito o ilícito. Y esas deci-siones las toma con sentido de eternidad: cómo influye cada decisión en mi entrada al Banquete Celestial. La persona prudente sabe decidir “prudentemente” tanto en los casos urgentes -cuando no es posible detenerse en un largo examen- como en los casos no urgentes -cuando sí puede hacer una reflexión con más tiempo. Un rasgo importante de la persona prudente es que pide consejo a personas sabias, y, si es necesario, acepta corrección cuando se la hagan. La persona prudente evita el pecado y -aún mejor- evita la tenta-ción al pecado, porque sabe que ésos son obstáculos que pueden poner en peligro su fin último, que es la salvación. Lo contrario a la Prudencia es el descuido, la imprudencia. ¿Cómo son los imprudentes? Son los que no tienen en cuenta su fin último y suelen actuar por capricho y con precipitación. También son inconstantes y abandonan por cualquier motivo el camino de la salvación. La principal imprudencia, sin embargo, es la de dar una impru-dente sobrevaloración a las cosas terrenas. Los imprudentes espirituales pueden ser muy cuidadosos para las cosas de este mundo, pero muy descui-dados para las cosas que tienen que ver con la vida eterna. Los prudentes entrarán al Banquete Celestial y los imprudentes tendrán que oír la sentencia que el Señor nos da al final de esta parábola: “No los conozco”. Para evitar esto, hay que estar siempre prudentemente preparados, ”porque no saben ni el día ni la hora.” Amen.

The 2018 Men in Black Calendars have arrived and will be available at our Churches. Donations of $15 are suggested for each calendar to benefit the St. John Vianney Society which supports our Diocesan priests and seminarians. The Knights of Columbus Council 12953 will hold a 2nd (and possibly 3rd) degree initiation on Saturday November 18, 2017. The initiation will be in the Guadalupe House (little white house) beginning at 2:30 PM. Candidates should arrive at 2 PM. All 1st and 2nd degree members should make every effort to attend this ceremony. This ini-tiation will be the council's November meeting. Contact Jeff Dufault at (208)522-3946 if you have questions.
