Message from the President

Page 2 Lotus Link Summer 2019

I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Martindale Community Association. I have been a resident of Martindale since 1998 and really love living here.

Let’s welcome June and hopefully we have a better start to summer with no

smoke in the air. Our AGM was a success and we have a brand new board. I would personally like to welcome everyone aboard. We would also like to thank all the members of the previous board and the executive for their countless hours of work: Chris Clarke, Sherri Sitter, Trevor Sitter, Sukhman Hehar, Nancy Perry, Mary Prasad, Vince Singh, Steven Saunders, Anomi Denagamage, Puma Banwait, Vickram Deol, Jagraj Singh Sohi, and KariLynn Thiessen. I know we have a monumental task to try and fill their shoes. We are very appreciative of the support we received from them and cannot thank them enough.

This is a great time for you, the members of our precious community to step forward and help us by volunteering. We need more board members and we also need lots of volunteers for our casinos, community events, and sub-committees including donation, planning and development.

Our casino dates are August 5th and 6th. Please call 403-930-6188 Ext. 2 or email us at [email protected] if you are able to help. Our Community Cleanup is on June 22, 2019 from 9 am to 2 pm at 110 Martin Crossing Park NE. Let’s all make a genuine effort to clean up our neighborhood and be proud of helping our neighbors. Let’s show that we do care. If everyone makes an effort we can get there together. I would like to see that we have the cleanest community in Calgary.

The annual Sikh Parade was held on May 11th, 2019 and there were over 50,000 people in attendance. This event was a great success and there was lots of free food and giveaways. People enjoyed the open atmosphere on a beautiful sunny day. The new route ended at Prairie Winds Park which was embraced for its greenery and the spaciousness it provides. We had great cooperation from hundreds of volunteers and the City of Calgary.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask you for your thoughts and feedback if we were to consider building a community hall in Martindale. I think this is a need for our community and it would greatly benefit everyone in Martindale. We will need a lot of help from everyone as this is no small feat. It is our goal to make Martindale GREAT but we cannot do it without your HELP!

MARTINDALE SUMMER

Students at Manmeet Singh Bhullar School recently participated in a Bike-to-School Week to help promote healthy lifestyle choices. Before the week started, students learned about bike safety rules and the importance of wearing a helmet that fit their head properly. Everyone was encouraged to come to school by using wheels in a new way (bicycles, scooters, skateboards, hover boards and rollerblades), or make the choice to walk or run instead of driving in a vehicle. During the student’s Physical Ed classes, the staff parking lot was turned into a safe space for students to learn and practice their skills. By not taking a car every day, we help to improve our personal fitness and we are taking steps to help the environment. The week was a wonderful success with an increased number of students riding bikes to school.

Seniors Corner —by Aziza Hakda

Older Active Adults – is a program that is run by the Genesis Centre for Senior Citizens. It runs everyday, Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 12 noon and the program is paired with Alberta Health Services/Mosaic Primary Care Network.

I wanted to let other seniors in the area know about this fantastic program. There is so much to do and so much support for people of our age. All the activities and programs are geared towards the older adult and are not intimidating at all. There are nurses and dietitians on hand and you can even have your blood pressure and blood sugar levels checked regularly.

I have met so many interesting people and made lots of new friends by coming to the programs at the Genesis Centre. I do what I can and work at my own pace and look forward to the group classes. The instructors are very qualified and encouraging. Classes range from Gentle Yoga, Balance & Stretch, Gentle Strength & Movement, to more intense Gym Time, then graduating to Butts and Guts! I will say they are so popular that you must come early to sign up for that day’s class! There are Healthy Eating & Cooking Classes and a variety of seminars on Stress Management. The best part is, it is all FREE!

If you have not been you should come and try it out. There is lots to do, or you can just walk around the track if you like. There is a great atmosphere and it is a wonderful community connector for seniors. I highly recommend trying out even if it is for once or twice a week. Once you try it you will be hooked!

Many issues are created when individuals park their vehicles on their front yard. First and foremost this practice is very dangerous and also falls under the City of Calgary Land Use Bylaw. The bylaw states that vehicles may only be parked in the actual front setback area when the vehicle is located on a driveway or motor vehicle parking stall that is hard surfaced. Please refer to City of Calgary Bylaw 341 list below:

1. A driveway must not have direct access to a major street unless:

(a) there is no practical alternative method of vehicular access to the parcel; and

(b) a turning space is provided on the parcel to allow all vehicles exiting to face the major street.

2. A driveway connecting a street to a private garage must:

(a) be a minimum of 6.0 metres in length along the intended direction of travel for vehicles and measured:

(i) from the back of the public sidewalk to the door of the private garage; or

(ii) from a curb where there is no public sidewalk to the door of a private garage; and

(b) contain a rectangular area measuring 6.0 metres in length and3.0 metres in width.

3. A driveway connecting a lane to a private garage must be a minimum of 0.60 metres in length along the intended direction of travel for vehicles, measured from the property line shared with the lane to the door of a private garage.

City of Calgary Land Use Bylaw 3414. Vehicles may only be parked in the actual front

setback area when the vehicle is located on a driveway or motor vehicle parking stall that is hard surfaced.

5. That portion of a driveway, including a motor vehicle parking stall, within 6.0metres of a public sidewalk, or a curb on a street where there is no public sidewalk, must not exceed a width of:

(a) 6.0metres where the parcel width is 9.0metres or less; or

(b) 7.0metres where the parcel width is greater than 9.0metres and less than 15.0metres.

6. In the Developed Area a driveway accessing a street must not be constructed, altered or replaced except where:

(a) it is located on a laneless parcel; (b) it is located on a laned parcel and 50.0 per cent or

more parcels on the same block face have an existing driveway accessing a street; or

(c) there is a legally existing driveway that it is not being relocated or widened.

7. A driveway constructed, altered or replaced in accordance with subsection (6) may be extended in length.

8. Where a parcel is the subject of development, the Development Authority must not require the removal of legally existing driveway accessing a street even where the proposed development tis a discretionary use.

Message from the President

Always call 911 when someone’s health or safety is at risk. When a life is at stake, 911 is the fastest way to get the help you need. Medical help arrives when the ambulance arrives. In the meantime, Calgary 9-1-1 can provide life saving instructions. NEVER try to drive a very sick or injured person to the hospital thinking it will be faster than waiting for an ambulance. In a true emergency, dial 911 and stay on the phone. We need to ask a few questions so we can send you the right help.

is the number to call any time you have an emergency

requiring police, fire or an ambulance.

TARADALE SUMMER

Hello Taradale Community Residents. Let’s welcome the hot weather, long sunny days, snow free roads, beautiful looking gardens in our backyards, the flowers, the green grass, the outdoor barbeques, and the amazing looking parks in our community, the

list just goes on and on. We wait for the beautiful Canadian Summer for a very long time every year and it’s here. These short couple of months will go really fast, let’s promise to enjoy every single moment of it with our friends, families and our neighbors. The Taradale Community Association has many events planned to bring all age residents together and we would like to thank you in advance for your participation and enthusiasm.

Thank you to all of you for your participation at the Taradale Community Association’s annual general meeting in April, volunteering your time at our Casino event, and make our community cleanup day in May a huge success. A special thank you to our existing and new board members

who stepped up to take a board position and made a commitment to service the community they live in.

I would like to encourage the residents of Taradale to participate and be part of the community association. We meet every 2nd Wednesday of each month at Genesis Center from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. We welcome you to come and join our meeting and share some of your ideas with us. We work together to help keep Taradale a friendly, safe, and welcoming neighborhood. We work with the residents to address concerns that affect Taradale. To fight the crime within our communities we need to come together as the bright and vibrant community we are. Get to know each other and watch out for each other.

Look for volunteer opportunities in the upcoming Lotus Link editions or on our Facebook page. It’s a great way to be involved and meet new people within our community. We are encouraging the youth of our community to get involved. Watch for our upcoming contests and challenges. Your first challenge? Can you name the neighbors to your left and right of your home? If not, this summer could be the perfect opportunity to find out! Whether you hike, bike or boat this summer, whatever you choose to do, stay safe.

Calgary Horticultural Society Interplanting Veggies & Flowers When I first started gardening, I had my flowers in their beds and the vegetables planted in a patch of their own. It wasn’t really until my son came home from pre-school one day, with a packet of ruby red lettuce seeds that his teacher had given him, that I started to look at flower and vegetable gardening differently. Without my knowledge, my then four year old son had sprinkled the lettuce seeds in a front flower bed.

I remember doubting my ability to recognize plants when, as the season started to progress, the first of the lettuce appeared amongst the growing perennials and tulips. I kept looking at the bed and asking myself, “Is that lettuce?” My identification abilities were confirmed when a friend came to visit and complimented me on planting ruby red lettuce in the flower bed. She told me she thought it was a great idea, as not only was it practical, but the colour and texture added to the flower bed. Ever since that year, I have grown vegetables amongst my flowers and vice versa.

Companion planting is not new and there are gardeners who have been doing it for years. If you would like to have a few vegetables, but do not want to give up your flowers, try planting scarlet runner beans in a container. They can be trained to grow up a teepee or obelisk or be allowed to fall gracefully down the sides of a planter. You could also trying planting beans and nasturtiums. These plants grow well together and you not only benefit from a harvest of fresh beans, but you can eat the nasturtiums as well.

Different leafy vegetables are great in containers too. I like to use different lettuces or spinach to add texture to a spring container full of pansies. I plant kale around my later flowering perennials to add some fall interest. I love to use ‘Redbor’ kale for this. If I do not consume all of the kale, it shows off a great deep burgundy colour late into the fall. Another interesting combination is planting beets in amongst some flowers. I planted some red

top beets with white Osteospermum and yellow Lysimachia one year. The beet foliage is interesting and colourful like rainbow Swiss chard and it is also edible, tasty and good for you.

Creating an interesting visual appearance is just one of the benefits of interspersing your planting of vegetables and flowers. Combining the two types of plants helps make efficient use of gardening space, can attract beneficial insects and provide pest deterrence. For example, sunflowers can be used to offer the support needed for beans or peas to grow up. If beans are not your cup of tea, grow morning glories around the base of the sunflowers instead. Flowers attract pollinators such as bees to your vegetables. Squash is one vegetable that benefits from the nearby planting of flowers such as cosmos. If you have a problem with rabbits, you will need to be cautious about making your garden attractive them. Try planting marigolds as rabbits are not fond of their fragrance and, a bonus, marigolds offer additional protection as an aphid deterrent.

When planting flowers and vegetables in the same area, keep in mind the growing requirements for both plants, such as moisture, soil conditions and, most importantly, sunlight requirements. Most vegetables require at least six hours of sunlight per day. Some vegetables, such as lettuce or spinach, do better in a cooler growing environment. Plant them around perennials or shrubs that can offer protection from the heat of the summer sun. These vegetables will also offer interesting variations of texture in the garden.

The most important thing to remember when choosing combinations of vegetable and flower plants is to plant what you like and will use. If you enjoy eating beans and have an established clematis, plant some of those favourite beans alongside the clematis and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

—Cathy Baceda

We are officially well into summer and the next few months are full of action! Stampede season is in full swing and I hope to see many of you enjoying the events and festivities in Ward 5 and in the rest of Calgary. Canada Day, along with a number of cultural festivals,

such as the Latin Festival, Mexi-Fest, Turkish Festival and Arab Festival will also be celebrated throughout the summer. Let us have fun and also be responsible – please have a designated driver for any activities where alcohol or cannabis will be consumed.

Connecting with our neighbors should be something we all aspire to, regardless of our backgrounds and ideals! We have a great opportunity in the summer to host BBQ’s and enjoy our patios with our friends and neighbors, so what are you waiting for!? Let’s continue to build bridges and create stronger neighbourhoods by connecting with one another.

Community cleanup events run from April through September to help keep our city clean and safe while also saving residents a trip to the landfill. Check calgary.ca/cleanup for the list of community associations hosting cleanup events and check your association website or Facebook page for full details on the event in your community.

Whether it is a new single-family home or a large new development, there is always a new development happening in our city. Now, you can find out about the changes taking place in your community in one easy place. Visit calgary.ca/pdmap to view a great interactive map with all the

planned development applications that are currently being considered by the City. After May 16th, development permits will no longer be published in newspapers. Available 24/7, new applications are added to the map when the City receives them and updated as the file progresses through the approval system. Calgarians can see land use re-designations, submit comments on proposed developments, check public hearing dates, file appeals and much more. As a hub for multiculturalism in the community, the Genesis Centre was proud to produce an event under the Celebrate Canada Program, which featured 25 cultural exhibitors, live, staged entertainment from numerous cultural performing arts groups, a kid’s fun zone and ethnic food varieties.

Genesis Centre would like to thank the Government of Canada and its Celebrate Canada program for funding this event. Genesis Centre would also like to thank its sponsors, exhibitors, performers, and countless volunteers who contributed to producing this event.

ABOUT MULTICULTURALISM DAY

Canadian Multiculturalism Day is celebrated each year on June 27th. It was created to honour multiculturalism as a fundamental characteristic of our country’s heritage to recognize that Canadians of all backgrounds have made and continue to make valuable contributions to Canadian society, to celebrate those contributions and to recognize Canadian diversity. Canada was the first country in the world to adopt a policy of multiculturalism. The Canadian Multiculturalism Act marked its 30th anniversary last year.

With generous monetary support from the Government of Canada, the Genesis Centre is proud to have been a signature site for Canadian Multiculturalism Day and to have produced the largest outdoor festival taking place in Calgary under the initiative.

Message from the President

Messy MailboxesI get it that most people don’t want all the junk mail that shows up in our mailboxes on a daily basis, but throwing it on the ground or stuffing it between the boxes is NOT a solution! Surely you can carry a few pieces of paper home and throw them in your recycling bin. Did you know that if you ask, Canada Post will stop delivering what they call unaddressed ad mail? Just take a small piece of paper (think: Post it note) and write “No unaddressed ad mail” on it. Tape it inside your mailbox, so it doesn’t blow away. I did this to the Community Association’s mailbox a couple of years ago and haven’t had any junk mail since.

SADDLE RIDGE SUMMER

This is my favourite time of year! The birds are singing, the flowers are starting to bloom, and we can once again interact and enjoy our back yards.

We have just finished our Ward 5 Clean up and I must say it was great to see all the residents of this area out helping. To the young people in attendance, the Scouts of the 197 North of Mcknight Troop, the Bengal Tigers Soccer Club and those who wanted to volunteer, thank you. To the adults who came out because they care about where they live and what impact it has, thank you. To the board members of each of the communities who came out to show their support, thank you. To the packer truck operators who came out to spend their afternoon with us, thank you. To George Chahal and his office for organizing this event, thank you. All in all, a big THANK YOU to everyone involved.

The next event happening will be the Saddle Ridge Pond Party at which I hope to see you at. This year we hope to have bouncy castles, games, fun food and good weather! Please join us at the Saddlecrest

Pond on July 27, 2019 and bring $10 with you to join the Community Association, because without you these kinds of events wouldn’t happen.

After the Pond Party we will next be canvassing the Savannah area to meet our new residents and let them know the Community Association is there for them. If you know anyone living in that area invite them to the Pond Party. They are part of Saddle Ridge.

In September we will be having our Community Clean up once again up at the Genesis Centre. This is a popular event and really helps our residents keep their clutter down. Look for more details in the article in this issue and on our Facebook page.

Finally, in November will be our Annual General Meeting to be held up at Genesis Centre. More information on this will be in the Fall issue of Lotus Link so keep an eye out.

SRCA COMMUNITY CLEANUPLET’S ALL WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN

This year the cleanup will be held on Sunday, September 15th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 pm in the &YMCA/Library Parking Lot at the Genesis Centre. We will be providing the following services:

• 3 City Packer Trucks (2 for garbage, 1 for organics)• Metal Recycling provided by Recon Metals• Electronic Recycling provided by Techno Trash

We may be adding other services closer to the date. More information will be posted on our Facebook page, in the Saddle Ridge Community, and on our website, mysrca.ca, later in the Summer.

There will be items we will NOT be able to handle. These include:

• Freezers

• Refrigerators

• Water Coolers

• Air Conditioning Units

• Paint / Chemicals

• Propane / Helium Tanks

• Microwaves

• Shingles

• Concrete

• Commercial/Contractor Garbage

The City website, calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere, has a useful list of how to dispose of the above items.

Community Cleanups are held throughout the City from late April to the end of June and again through the month of September. You are welcome to use the basic service, packer trucks, in any of the communities for free. However, communities may charge a nominal fee for additional services. For information on where and when each community’s cleanup is being held go to calgary.ca/cleanup.

Want to help with this event?

1. If you want to volunteer for the Saddle Ridge cleanup please contact [email protected].

2. If you have a truck and a helper or 2, you can help your neighbours who may not be able to transport their garbage to the cleanup site.

3. Or, you can drive through your area’s back alleys and pick up any garbage or items dumped by others and bring them to the cleanup site.

4. Don’t have a truck? You can help by sponsoring the refreshments and lunch we provide to those who are volunteering to work the cleanup.

5. Help by donating money toward the cost of Bold Signs advertising.

For starters, as a homeowner in Saddle Ridge it’s the right thing to do. It is with your support that we are able to exist and operate. We have great plans and you are a huge part of them. The SRCA is the only voice of the Saddle Ridge Community to the Government, Developers, Calgary Parks, and the City of Calgary. The amount of effort already put in by the Board on land use, soccer programs and recycling over the last few years has been significant! Community Spirit is another big reason to have our Community Association. Over the past few years the SRCA has held numerous successful community events including the Pond Parties, Casino, Recycling and Community Cleanups.

Surviving Your First Year of High SchoolAs you enter high school, there are a lot of changes that take place. Homework, extracurricular activities and friendships are very crucial things in high school.

Anything studied in school should be revised after school. Even though you may not have homework every day, you should consider going home and taking a quick glance over your school work to make sure you retain what you’ve learned. Other than revision, homework should be your 1st priority every day after the school day (after doing your extracurricular activities).

Sports, clubs and other things of this sort, consist of extracurricular activities you can take part in. These things are a commitment; therefore, you should be on time to any meetings, games or practices. Activities like these, are strongly encouraged, so you should go out, have fun and make new friends.

You can make or break friendships in high school, the important part is that you’re attending all classes and keeping your grades up. You should really think about who your friends are and not take advantage of anyone or let anyone take advantage of you. With that being said, do not isolate yourself, friendliness and being social is key when meeting new people. Along with social problems comes stress & confusion.

Choosing classes, keeping grades up and thinking about your future can be very challenging. When choosing your classes, do what interests you, not what interests your friends. Your grades need to stay high in order to pass classes. This is new for people just entering high school and it can be an aggravating thing to do. The same can be said about planning your future, some people know what they want to do as they grow up. Others have no idea but soon figure it out. The best you can do is work hard and see what interests you.

—Deyan

Traffic Safety ClubI am a grade four student at Hugh A. Bennett School. We are building a Traffic Safety Club in our school. We were so excited to be a part of this club because we get to help other students and we have our own green vests to represent that we are Traffic Safety Ambassadors.

The purpose of this club is to help and support young students travelling from the Hug and Go Zone to the school ground. As a Traffic Safety Ambassador, it is my job to help young students, to ensure their safety and to control traffic in the morning. I like this club in my school because it gives awareness of traffic rules, our safety and the safety of others.

What is Malware? Malware is a computer software or file that is designed to harm a computer and/or a computer user. Malware is short for Malicious Software.

How Malware is Used?

Malware is an umbrella term used for a vast variety of harmful computer programs. These programs can steal your passwords, take over control of your computer and hold your data hostage.

Criminals, specifically cybercriminals, use infected computers to launch attacks on other computers or network of computers to access personal financial information, for financial gain and to spread confusion and fake news.

Common Types of Malware

There are so many kinds of malware like bots, trojan, worms, logic bombs, root kit, adware, bugs, but we are going to list only a few common ones here.

Phishing: Pronounced like “fishing”. These days this is the number one culprit in stealing sensitive information using electronic communication like email, text and website. Phishing attacks look like they come from a legitimate source and trick users to click on a look-alike website to steal passwords.

Virus: A computer virus replicates itself by attaching to other computer programs and inserting its own code.

Spyware: As the name suggests, spyware is a computer program that spies on people and companies and gather their information without their knowledge.

Ransomware: Ransomware is a computer program that threatens to lose your data for ever unless you pay a ransom.

Technical Support Scams: The scammers use scare tactics to fraud users into paying technical support fees.

Malware Warning Signs

The following is a list of some common symptoms:

• High CPU and memory usage

• The computer is slow in responding to your inputs

• Your browser home page is different than your regular one

• When you search the Internet, multiple windows open

• You notice strange toolbars on your browser

• Free anti-virus is installed without your permission or knowledge

• You have to restart your computer multiple times

• The computer crashes frequently

• Blue screen of death (BSOD)

• The hard disk is getting full

Removal and Prevention

• Keep your operating system patched. If you use Microsoft Windows, patches get released on the second Tuesday of every month

• Keep your software on the computer updated and patched

• Invest in a good antivirus software - they are not more expensive than your privacy

• Do not plug your devices directly into the Internet modem - buy a good router/firewall and secure it

• Go to only reputable and trusted sites and look for https in their address like you see when you go to your bank website

• Make sure you trust the link you are going to click on

• Knowledge is your best weapon - educate yourself

Land AcknowledgmentGenesis Centre would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the Traditional Territory of

the Blackfoot Confederacy: Siksika, the North and South Piikuni Nations, and the Kainai Tribe, Including other members of Treaty Seven First Nations the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the three Bands

of the Stoney Nakoda Nations; Chiniki, Wesley, and Bearspaw. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III, and all those who have made their home in this area.

National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month – a time for all Canadians – Indigenous, non-Indigenous and newcomers – to reflect upon and learn the history, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. It’s important to keep in mind that First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples each have their own unique histories. And within each group, there are distinct histories.

So, where do you begin to learn about the history of Indigenous Peoples? You could start with this recently released report from The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, available on the Indigenous Corporate Training Blog (www.ictinc.ca/blog/national-indigenous-history-month).

Why do Indigenous Peoples need to learn about their history?

Because, due to assimilation and segregation policies of the federal government, Indigenous Peoples were physically removed from their lands onto reserves or into settlements. Their relationship with their traditional lands was the foundation of who they were as a People; the land held their

history. In addition to removing them from their lands, everything that made them who they were – their distinct cultural practices, languages, spirituality – was outlawed, prohibited or erased.

It is estimated that 150,000 Indigenous children were forced into the residential schools that operated from the late 1800s until the last one closed in 1996. While at the schools the children were taught or forced to accept that they, their families and cultures were inferior to European culture and lifestyle. The children learned to be ashamed of their identity. It has been a struggle for many individuals and communities ever since to relearn, regain, and revitalize what was taken.

Indigenous Peoples need to celebrate their history because doing so helps to stop the loss and grow their cultures. Celebrating their history invigorates pride in being Indigenous. In their existence. In the preservation of their cultures, protocols, spirituality, traditions, and languages. In their resilience against the ravages of assimilation policies that were geared towards a final solution of getting rid of the Indian problem.
