W elcome to today’s match. Hopefully this be the first event in a tradition celebrating the life of

a young man who brought joy and warmth to the people in his life. The last few months have been difficult, and while the emptiness has been evident, the support, love and kindness shown by all of those who played even a tiny part in Martin’s life has been overwhelming. Again, thank you for every card, flower, every message of support, every visitor who came to see our family and everyone who joined us on the 10th of October

to celebrate Martin’s life. We could not have done any of it without everybody’s participation, so thank you for helping us to realise how important Martin was to so many people.

So again today we come together to celebrate Martin. The 6th of December would have been Martin’s 25th birthday, so our present to him is to celebrate his love of football, and specifically two teams: Celtic and Inter. Many people claim to support many teams. Some people follow 1 team, some follow 10, but they always have a leaning towards one team in particular over the others. Martin really loved both his teams. One was never really favoured over the other, and thankfully the only 2 times they ever played each other in his life were in friendly matches, because who knows how he would have managed to pick one over the other! Martin was at Paradise every other Saturday since he was 10, he made the trips across Scotland and the treks across Europe to follow Celtic. He made his first pilgrimage to the San Siro in 2004 to see Inter beat Juventus in Italy’s biggest match. He’s made that same journey many more times, and he was privileged to be in Madrid on the night Inter won the Champions League. But it wasn’t always good times for both teams, and Martin suffered with both teams but like any good fan, stood by his teams and made his support stronger.

Today we do our best to bring that support to life again. Friends and family have offered their services to represent Martin’s two loves as best they can. We can’t guarantee that the Celtic XI will bring back memories of Jinky, Burns or Larsson, or that the Inter XI will recreate the performances of Mazzola, Zanetti or Milito, but what we hope is to show our love for Martin and for everyone to have a fun day.

Martin of course suffered with epilepsy throughout his life, and the response we received at St. Alphonsus in our collection was phenomenal. Again today, the proceeds from today’s match will be given to Epilepsy Connections to help with their work and efforts to

support families in the Greater Glasgow area who deal with epilepsy every day. It is of course a cause close to our hearts, and your support is welcome in every way. A raffle will take place during today’s game with some fantastic prizes donated by some of the companies you will see featured in today’s match programme, so good luck to everyone who takes part.

We hope you all enjoy the game, and that today is the first of many events that we will hold to remember Martin. Thank you again for your support and lets make today a day to remember.

Thank you,

Epilepsy Connections is a charity founded in April 2000 which

provides information and support to people with epilepsy, their

families, friends and those with whom they live and work.

We run a variety of projects within the Greater Glasgow & Clyde

and Forth Valley Health Board areas.

The Captain says…

Some people may wonder: why Inter? My Dad was brought up in Tuscany, and even though the local teams would have been Lucca, Pisa or Fiorentina, his Dad, his Uncles, and his Grandfather were all Inter fans, so it was only natural that he would support them too, and he showed us that support for Inter, so it was easy for Martin and me to support them too. Many people in Scotland think of Inter as politically right-wing, even fascist after they were forced to change their name and colours in the 1930s to conform to Mussolini’s ruling. But Inter was born out of Milan’s ‘exclusivity’ to the English people in Milan at the time, only a club for them and the best Ital-ians. But on 9 March 1908, a group of rebels formed "Football Club Internazionale Milano". The name of the club derives from the wish of its founding members to accept foreign players as well as Italians, hence the name Inter-nazionale, a club for the brothers of the world. Today, I’m proud to manage this Inter team In Martin’s name, and under the spirit of the clubs roots, welcome everyone who wished to join my team. Today is our day to win this inaugural competition, and maybe get a little revenge for 1967!

Forza Ragazzi! Pazza Inter Amala!
