Thulagi (7,059m), attempt. Nine Japanese led by the well-known Himalayan explorer, Tamotsu Ohnishi, made the first known attempt on Thulagi, a southwestern outlier o f M anaslu (8,163m ) that was opened for climbing by the Nepalese government in 2003. The team approached via the M arsyandi and Dudh Khola toward the Larkya La, as far as the entrance to the Khasontu Khola, where they established base camp at 3,280m. The Japanese tried a mixed rib up the center o f the steep icy wall on the northwest face o f Thulagi, but gave up at 6,250m
on May 3 due to difficulties and frequent avalanches em anating from the edge o f the plateau just above their high point.
