Airport Manager’s ReportMay 17th, 2017

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), sent us notice that the instrument approach Non-Directional Beacon (NDB), for 16 would be listed as Not Available at night unless we can verify that the 20:1 clear zone is clear of obstructions or the Visual Approach Slope Indicators (VASIs) which provide vertical guidance get commissioned. Duffy and I are both of the mind that when the VASI is replaced with a Precision Approach Path Indicator lights, that will be the time to have the lights commissioned. The VASIs are a maintenance concern in that they require regular maintenance to keep them functioning.

The FAA was recently at the airport testing the approaches at the airport. They were flying in a Challenger Jet that made multiple passes over the runway this month.

Bill Berg from Northway Communications stopped out this past month for his quarterly inspection of the Simplified Directional Frequency (SDF) approach and the outer marker in

The FAA made low passes this month over the runways at the airport.

This medical flight made it in before the rain on May 16th.

Richfield. Bill pointed out that the small heater in the SDF malfunctioned in that it did not turn off. So it was on generating heat. In the winter this is okay as it keeps the temperature in the building set, but it could certainly overheat the equipment when the temperatures got warmer. Bill unplugged the heater and asked that we replace it next fall / winter. As typical, the mouse poison also needs a refresh in the SDF and outer marker shed.

The field solidified enough for us to take a tractor out assist in lowering the windsock pole to replace the windsock that was damaged in March. Walt and Bob replaced the windsock with a replacement we have. We have an additional replacement windsock if needed. The windsock pole suffered some damage with a broken flange.

Duffy is on his way to his last few days as a pilot examiner. The 31st of May will be his last day. It has been an amazing 31 yeas as a pilot examiner. Duffy has had well over 6,000 pilots that he

has assisted in helping get a pilot rating over the years. Duffy will still be active at the airport and will be acting as a flight instructor at the airport. Duffy has spoken with another pilot examiner about doing flight checks at the airport.

Happy Flying - Duffy, Alice, Robert and Jeff Gaier
