THE CITY #THECITY#

Marmaris has grown from a tiny fishingvillage into one of the biggest touristresorts in Turkey. Even so, the town centreis still quite small, and in the old quarterbehind the marina you can stroll aroundamid all the delightful hustle and bustle ofbazaars and street life. For a beautiful viewof the Bay of Marmaris,

visit Suleiman the Magnificent’s castle inthe Old Town.

Marmaris’ neighbouring resort Icmeler liesjust a few miles away, and many peoplelike to walk along the beach. That will alsogive you some idea of how much ishappening in the boat scene, and the widerange of water sports available along thebeaches. But while Marmaris offers morebuzz and entertainment, Içmeler boastsbetter beaches. It is also child-friendly,and newly built.

Turkey’s rich and famous tend tocongregate in the marina at Marmaris –which means there are good restaurantsand great shopping. During the highseason, there are as many as ten thousandboats in the Bay of Marmaris, reckoned tobe one of the finest bays in the world.

There are several excellent long-distancefootpaths in the mountains, and manyopportunities for excursions amid thebeautiful scenery and the little villagesalong the coast.

DO & SEE #DOANDSEE#

Datça PeninsulaThe road across the Datça peninsula hasstunning scenery, with steep mountains, ravines and flat countryside. Datça is anattractive village about 90 km west ofMarmaris. SHOPPING #SHOPPING#

First a brief warning. As Marmaris is such abig tourist destination, you have to keepan eye on prices. Some things can costfour times as much as they do elsewhere, for example in Datça. Be alert for fakeversions of branded goods, and check thatyou can actually change the batteries inthe watch. Otherwise it will just be anexpensive throwaway watch. However, pirate don’t necessarily mean worse qualitythan the originals. Haggling is essential, above all when buying carpets.

When all that is said and done, it can stillbe a lot of fun just to wander round thebazaar that stretches over several blocksin the town centre. Here you will findcarpets, leather jackets, pirated designergoods and souvenirs are all kinds. At themarket (Thursdays in Marmaris andFridays in Içmeler) you can buy honey andspices (always worth buying in Turkey).Tablecloths are another good buy. But justbrowsing around all the stalls withoutshopping is also quite an experience. Thesedays the market in Marmaris is a coveredmarket (near the dolmus station and theTansas department store).

In the Netzel shopping mall (Netzelmarina) you will find leisure clothes andexclusive designer labels for sailing types.Sometimes called Beverly Hills, becausehere at Tommy Hilfiger and Lacoste theysell not copies, but the real thing.

If you are looking for delicacies, we canrecommend a look around Tansas, a hugedepartment store with a well-stocked foodsection. They also sell toys, clothes andhousehold goods
