A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Northwood FC who are here this evening for this BetVictor South Central League match. Here we are in mid-February and this is our second encounter of the season which is taking place just 7 days after the away version as a result of the recent weather. That game was not one of our better ones and we went down by the only goal of a very disappointing game to a club under new management for several times this season.

Recent weather has not been too kind but last Saturday we did manage to get a game played at table=topper Ware on their excellent artificial surface and we came away with a point following a spirited showing as just reward. Unfortunately, Alex Salmon picked up another injury and must be considered doubtful for tonight’s game but on the positive side he was replaced by Chris Ovenden who managed to carry on through to the end and is now looking well on the road to recovery himself.

In February we were looking at a very busy month, but this has now been superseded by an equally busy March with 8 scheduled fixtures. We are home again on Saturday to Chipstead and then again next WEDNESDAY to Reading in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup – yes, that is right – WEDNESDAY, and we very much hope that you can get along to give your support to the lads.

So now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do particularly over the coming months.

Terry Staines, Chairman

FROM THE DUGOUT Good evening, I hope you are enjoying the league season to date and are pleased to see that results have recently picked up and are getting to somewhere that we can be happier with. I must compliment the lads for their recent performances both here and away and we are at last beginning to see some of the long list of injuries reduce to certainly improve matters – although current suspensions are not helping

I must congratulate those players who have managed to make it onto the pitch on their efforts over the past month or so and feel certain that the reward for their efforts will be seen in the league table in due course. Hopefully this afternoon the efforts of the recent weeks in recruitment bear fruit – although we are still trying to strengthen the squad to compensate.

With so many injuries our performances have suffered with the enforced changes on a weekly basis and we have introduced new faces as and when we can to try and minimise the disruption and we continue to do so. We were very pleased to see skipper Chris Ovenden now healed sufficiently for him to return – and he of course marked his return with a typical goal! The return of Alex Salmon is also great news and he is already making his presence felt with typical calm performances although he suffered a setback on Saturday away at Ware. Kamaron English and Jordan Edwards have recently returned, and we all hope that you will see their quality as they settle back in. Junaid Bell has also been back on the pitch for a short time in recent weeks and we will be seeing more of him too.

I am sure that this evening will prove to be another tough test and your support will be vital to the performance of those on the pitch. Please have an enjoyable visit, and thanks for spending it with us here at Oak Tree Road and here’s looking forward to seeing you leave in a happy frame of mind in a very busy month which we hope will at last see an improvement in the weather.

BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE REVIEW

It's our severely weather impacted round up of a very truncated Saturday programme! There’s no truth in the rumour that the Isthmian League has decided to adopt “Oh no, it’s raining again,” by Supertramp as it’s official anthem, but it would be appropriate, wouldn’t it?

We ended up with four matches in the Premier Division, one in the North Division, two in the South Central Division, and three in the South East Division. Everything else disappeared under the deluge. Seven of the ten were played on a 3G pitch. Well done to Hornchurch, Wingate and Finchley and Ramsgate, the only people who managed to keep their grass above water level.

Our league leaders, Worthing, had bounced back from two defeats to take four points from the following two matches, so it looked as if their blip was over- and you’d expect that a collection of Mackerel Men would cope well with damp conditions. However, there was a shock on the cards at the Crucial Environmental Stadium as visiting Potters Bar Town took a first half lead through marvellous Marvin Morgan- and held onto it for almost forty minutes before Ollie Pearce grabbed an equaliser. That was that, and Worthing extended their lead at the top to seven points.

Hornchurch entertained Haringey Borough on Bridge Avenue and took advantage of the fact that Folkestone Invicta had seen their match disappear under the mud of Cheshunt to go above them into second place. Chris Dickson put them ahead just before the hour with his twenty fifth goal of the season, and then got number twenty six with ten minutes remaining. Roman Michael-Percil got one back for Borough in the last minute, but there was no time for an equaliser.

Cray Wanderers played Merstham on Sunday, thanks to Hayes Lane being 3G. Cray came out on top in front of crowd of 329, with 3 first half goals ensuring victory with Merstham picking up a late consolation.

BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE REVIEW

Some sunshine at Wingate and Finchley- image courtesy of Stuart Fuller

At Colston Avenue fifth place Carshalton Athletic entertained sixth place Horsham. Two points separated the sides at kick off, but it was five at the end, as the Robins eased to victory. They were ahead after only two minutes, Christie Pattison opening the scoring, and it was two thirty minutes later, Ernold Haxhiu doubling their advantage. Kershaney Samuels made it three with seventeen minutes left, and Ricky Korboa rubbed salt into the Hornets wounds with a fourth four minutes from time. Athletic climb to fourth.

We had a really important match at the bottom end of the table, as Wingate and Finchley, who have hauled themselves out of the bottom three, hosted Lewes, who had a chance of ending up in that relegation zone if they lost again and the other scheduled matches had actually gone ahead! The hosting Blues had won at Folkestone Invicta last time out and were unbeaten in five matches, whilst the Rooks had lost eight of their last nine- although they had emerged undefeated from fifty percent of their away matches this season, so will probably have been glad to be on the road. The Rooks took the lead after only seven minutes,

Page 12: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE REVIEW Ronnie Conlon with the goal, but on twenty five minutes, great heavens it was Great Evans (sorry, it’s compulsory) with the equaliser. That was the end of the scoring, and both sides had to be content with a point.

The North Division had only one match, as second place Heybridge Swifts travelled to AFC Sudbury. It took an hour before the opening goal arrived, and it was Teniola time once more, Alex getting his twenty second of the season- but within a quarter of an hour the Yellows were level, Callum Harrison firing home from the spot, and then another spot kick from the same player ten minutes later gave the hosts victory in front of a crowd of four hundred and four.

Aveley finally found a giant they couldn't slay, as they went out of the FA Trophy at Notts County. But what a competition they've had, being magnificent ambassadors for our league- as have their five hundred and thirty travelling fans.

Ware had the chance to go five points clear of Hanwell Town at the top of the South Central Division. The blues hosted a fast-improving Marlow side who had suffered something of a blip in midweek as they fell by a single goal at Northwood, but their defence got back to its impermeable best once more as the match finished without a goal. Ware end the day three points clear, but second place Hanwell Town have two matches in hand.

Harlow Town hosted Chalfont St Peter in a match which both desperately wanted to win, as they had both been starved of that winning feeling for quite some time. The Hawks had won only two of their previous ten and headed into this one on the back of three successive defeats, whilst the Saints hadn’t won any during that period- but they have now. An own goal put the visitors in front just after the half hour, and they held on for a victory which took them level on points with their hosts.

Tooting and Mitcham United’s match with Bracknell Town was a Football v Homophobia special event, but sadly didn’t beat the rain, as you can see from our headline picture. There will however be a feature from the game tomorrow.

BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE REVIEW

Ashford United had the chance to open up a three point advantage over second place Hastings United at the top of the South East Division, but Chichester City, who had lost only two of their previous ten, were determined not to make it easy for their hosts. City took an early lead due to an own goal, but that lasted only until the twelfth minute as Tommy Fagg equalised for the Nuts and Bolts. Five minutes after the break George Purcell put the home side ahead, but they were soon pegged back as Ben Pashley got an equaliser- and then disaster struck for the Nuts and Bolts as Lloyd Rowatt got what turned out to be the winner for Chi, who move to within six points of a playoff place with four games in hand.

Perhaps the big winners, however, were Hastings United, who are level on points with Ashford United but now have two matches in hand.

Sevenoaks Town welcomed eighth place VCD Athletic. Oaks had lost their last three, whilst Vickers had seen their form improve markedly, with three wins and a draw from their last four matches- and the visitors took the lead with only nineteen minutes remaining, Robert Hylton-Bartley with the goal. They couldn’t hold onto that advantage, however, an own goal bringing an equaliser four minutes from time, and then Oaks delivered the coup de grace, new signing Andy Pugh giving them victory in the very last minute- nineteen minutes after coming on for his debut.

Ramsgate in nineteenth hosted seventeenth place Faversham Town. There

were nine points between the two at start of play, but they were the worst

two sides in the Division over the last ten games, a period when the Rams

had taken five points but the Lilywhites only four. The Rams belied that

form, however, as Jude Arthurs, Giorgio Russo and Kane Rowland gave

them a three-nil victory, moved them up a place in the table, and gave them

a nine point advantage over bottom side East Grinstead Town.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN THEY say age is just a number but in football it’s one that can increasingly count against you – especially as it increases!

So, let’s show our appreciation for some Golden Oldies, who are doing their bit to show if you’re good enough, you’re young enough also rings true.

After all, it was only a few years ago that Chris Swailes became the oldest scorer at Wembley when he notched for Morpeth Town in their 4-1 FA Vase final win over Hereford.

Swailes was 45 years old when he turned the ball into the net to silence the mass of Hereford fans who had made the trip.

Not bad for a defender who has had a long, career that took in plenty of stops in the Football League.

Non-League is always good for an evergreen footballer, particularly the strikers. Paul Brayson has been a regular scorer for Newcastle Benfield in recent years and he is still knocking them in aged 42.

Perhaps it’s something about those genuine goal scorers that, while the legs might not be as quick as they used to be, the minds is just as sharp. That gets them into the right goalscoring positions and then, when the ball is at their feet or the cross is in the right place, they just know how to stick the ball into the back of the net.

Jamie Cureton has scored at every level from the Premier League down. At 44 he isn’t just on the back nine of his career, he’s strolling up the 18th.

But he’s still one of the leading scorers in the Isthmian Premier Division and despite a surprise departure from Bishop’s

Page 19: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN Stortford last week – the club couldn’t guarantee his continuing role as player-manager next season – he has already found the net for new club Hornchurch.

I caught up with his new manager, Mark Stimson, last week and he spoke to Cureton’s desire to get in behind the back four burning as bright as ever.

Stimson describes Cureton as a “clever” player and he’s sure the youngsters in their squad will take plenty on board from the former Norwich City man.

Cureton himself says it is all about diet and re-fuelling the right way after matches. When I spoke to Cureton last year as he reached his 1,000th game, he said he genuinely felt like he could do a job in the League still. And while you’re feeling good, why not keep playing?

Back in the FA Vase, there was a familiar name on the scoresheet in Wroxham’s win over Stowmarket Town.

Grant Holt, another former Norwich striker, turns out regularly for the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Yachtsmen. He hit a penalty in the 2-0 win that has put them in the last eight of the competition. A final hurrah at Wembley Stadium for Holt?

Although aged 38, he could have far more opportunities yet. Just ask Swailes!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD FC

The current club was formed in 1926,

following several other outfits that had

carried the town’s name in earlier years,

the first known, Northwood FC, being

formed in September 1899, but it is not

clear how long they existed. A team

called Northwood Rovers played in the

Harrow & District League up to the First

World War, but a new Northwood FC

was launched after the conflict, in

September 1919, and soon Emmanuel Northwood were also

competing in the Harrow & District League.

The next club to commence was Holy Trinity Northwood, again in

the Harrow League, whilst in 1922 Northwood moved to the

Uxbridge & District League. However, having lost their first nine

fixtures in the second season, Northwood found that they were

unable to field a team for later games and the club folded. Around

the same time, Emmanuel Northwood also withdrew from the

Harrow League.

After two seasons in which just Holy Trinity represented the town

on the football field, a few people who had been involved with the

two failed set-ups decided to form a new club, and Northwood

United was launched for the 1926-27 campaign, with Leslie Faint,

secretary of the previous Northwood FC, holding the same post for

United. For the first two seasons, just friendly matches were played,

apart from entering the Northwood Hospital Charity Cup, but after

the second campaign, in which sixteen of the twenty-three games

had been won, it was decided to join a league.

Page 34: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD FC

Northwood United were elected to Division Two of the Harrow &

District League for 1928-29, playing at Northwood Playing Fields,

which was adjacent to Haste Hill golf course, at the end of The Drive,

Northwood. In the team at that time were young players Joe Gill,

Bob Bell and Tom Bell, who would be with the club many years later,

even returning after the Second World War, and the latter also

became club secretary.

In their second year the club gained promotion, and twelve months

later, further success saw them move up to the Premier Division of

the Harrow & District League (later renamed Harrow, Wembley &

District League). At that time the club gained the use of a pitch in

Northwood Recreation Ground at an annual cost of £14. 14s.

including pitch marking and dressing room.

1931-32 saw the commencement of Northwood United’s

dominance of local junior football. Within five years of entering

league football, United had become Premier Division champions, a

feat they repeated for each of the next four years, followed by

second and third places up to the War. The League Senior Challenge

Cup was won three times during that period, and in 1938 the club

won the Middlesex Junior Cup, having been losing finalists in 1935

and 1936.

After the Second World War, with the disappearance of Holy Trinity

Northwood, the club dropped the “United” suffix from their title,

and were Harrow & Wembley champions in consecutive years, 1948

and 1949.

After being a mid-table side in the Premier Division throughout the

‘fifties, the club hit a slump in the early 'sixties, suffering a first-ever

relegation in 1962, and they became something of a yo-yo side for

Page 35: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD FC a few years, but towards the end of the 1960s things improved.

Northwood were elected into the Middlesex League in 1970, and

they became runners-up at the end of their second season.

After playing in the main park since 1931, the mid-seventies saw the

Woods develop an area of rough land into their present ground with

suitable facilities, and further developments have been carried out

regularly since.

The Woods won the Middlesex League Cup on three occasions and

also the League championship in 1978, completing the Middlesex

League double, and the club were subsequently elected to the

Hellenic League. In the first season they were promoted to the

topflight as Division One champions and Hellenic League Division

One Cup winners. Northwood also lifted the Middlesex

Intermediate Cup by beating Feltham 2-1 – the club’s first County

Cup success for forty-one years. Floodlights were erected and senior

status was granted in 1981.

Due to large travelling costs, Northwood switched to play in the

London Spartan League in 1984 and they were soon to become one

of the competition's top clubs. After one League Cup win, a runners-

up spot and two third places, the Woods completed a League and

Cup double in 1992. Along with this success came considerable

ground improvements, which allowed them to be promoted to the

Isthmian League, Division Three.

After five years at the higher level, following early success by

winning the 1993 Associate Members Trophy, and several

promotion challenges, Northwood made it to Division Two in 1997.

Following three seasons in that division, the Woods earned further

promotion when they gained the runners-up spot in 2000. They also

Page 36: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD FC captured the Associate Members Trophy for a second time and

reached their first ever Middlesex Senior Cup final, where they went

down 2-0 to GM Vauxhall Conference outfit Hayes.

Another three years later and Northwood found themselves in the

Premier Division, having won the Division One North championship

in 2003. They also captured the Isthmian League Cup for the first

time in 2002, beating Premier Division Hampton & Richmond

Borough in the final, 3-2 after extra-time, and also reached the

Middlesex Senior Cup final once again, this time beaten in extra-

time by Hendon.

September 2002 saw the Woods defeat Premier Division champions

Gravesend & Northfleet 4-2 to lift the Isthmian Charity Shield. It

proved a difficult first season in the Premier Division, but after an

F.A. restructure of non-League football, Northwood remained in the

division for a second season.

In 2003, Northwood received the prestigious award of Community

Club status from the Football Association in recognition of the club's

commitment to youth football in the area – the club have teams of

all age groups playing their football within the confines of

Northwood Park. Improvements have been made to the standards

in recent years, and the club is hoping this will result in many

youngsters developing into first-team players in the future.

Northwood faced a new challenge for the 2005-06 campaign, having

been moved to the Southern League Premier Division, and although

the first season in the new league was a struggle, the team avoided

the drop on the final day. However, 2007 saw the Woods finish in

22nd place in the division, and relegation followed – the first time

the club had faced demotion in senior football. It wasn't all doom

Page 37: MARLOW · Goalkeeper who transferred into the club from Ashford Town (Mx) prior to the start of the season 2013-14. Has also played for AFC Hayes, Slough Town and Hayes & Yeading

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD FC and gloom, though, as Northwood lifted the Middlesex Senior Cup

for the first time in their history by defeating Hayes, of the

Conference South, on their own ground in the final.

Having been moved back to the Isthmian League for the 2007-08

campaign, and after spending three years in Division One North,

Northwood were then transferred again to the Southern League

Division One Central in 2010-11. Their first season was a struggle,

but they successfully avoided relegation after a bright finish to the

campaign and in 2012, it proved much more successful, only missing

out on a play-off place on the final day of the season. The following

season was boosted by an FA Cup run to the third qualifying round

while a forced change of manager saw the Woods have to rebuild

the squad so a mid-table finish was very acceptable. Mark Burgess

had successful full seasons in charge, surpassing expectations by

finishing ninth, tenth and then seventh respectively. There was also

success in cup competitions, reaching the League Cup semi-final in

2016 before losing on penalties to Merthyr Town and then winning

the Middlesex Senior Cup for the second time in the club’s history

with a 2-0 victory over Ryman Premier side Enfield Town. However,

2016/17 was more of a struggle after losing most of the successful

side to a higher level and relegation was only just avoided.

Since then a series of managers have come and gone quickly and Scott Dash, who was appointed permanently in December 2018 following a successful spell as caretaker only lasted just under a year after a series of poor results saw another change and the arrival of Jamie Leacock to the role. Jamie’s tenure was ended in January 2020 after a run of ten successive defeats and former player Robert Ursell has now been given the initial task of steering the club away from possible relegation.
