INTRODUCTION:

This term paper is based on New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) planning to open

one its campuses in India. NYIT is has several campuses all over the globe, and now it is

trying to expand to India. The paper reflects over all view of the strategies that is to be

considered while going global. The reason for choosing this topic in my term paper is

because; India recently passed a bill where foreign schools are invited to build their

campuses in India. We as NYIT students, and being from a Indian decent, gave us the

idea about “NYIT going to India. Another reason that gave us this golden idea was when

we saw the ratio of Indian students coming from India to attend NYIT at both Old

Westbury and Manhattan campuses. Overall, NYIT’s ultimate goal is to go globally.

Recently, President of NYIT, Edward Giuliano announced that he is going to India with a

presentation on Indian students at NYIT. After looking at all the factors, we decided to

compose a marketing plan about NYIT opening their campus at major cities and states in

India. The locations include Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and the state of

Gujarat. As you read along, you will find the key factors to why we decided to come up

with this plan.

Overview of NYIT:

What is NYIT?

NYIT opened its first campus in 1910. It was named New York Institute of Technology.

Since then, they never stopped progressing. In 1984, the Central Islip campus was

discovered. In 1998 NYIT went international. NYIT is known for its technology so

therefore we will have the latest technology. NYIT started 3-D distance learning system

development in 2003. Distance learning helped in bringing all the schools together and

makes the world compact. Further NYIT did not stop growing as far as globalization is

concern. Besides, NYIT walks together on current issues like environment protection.

Therefore in Old Westbury solar panels are used for generating solar energy. It

continued growing globally, today NYIT’s global campuses are Abu Dhabi, UAE,

Jordan, Manama, Bahrain; Nanjing, China; Vancouver, Canada.

Mission Statement

A global, private institution of higher education, NYIT has more than 15,000 students on

campuses in North America, China, the Middle East, and online. Since 1955, NYIT has

pursued its mission to:

• To provide career-oriented professional education

• To offer access to opportunity to all qualified students

• To support applications-oriented research that benefits the larger world

A Global Story

"Today, NYIT campuses are now akin to “idea centers” around the globe where

commerce, culture, intellectualism, and academics come together. These locations

function as a unified & emdash; but heterogeneous &emdash; whole, offering shared

experiences and educational opportunities to all students and faculty. This redefining of

the global university is at the core of NYIT’s mission."

Page 6: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

(In the fall of 2011, NYIT will open its American-style India campuses in collaboration

with India Institute of Technology (IIT). The four academic undergraduate degree

programs are held in a state-of-the-art facility: business administration, communication

arts, electrical and computer engineering, and computer science. NYIT-India students

have access to residence halls, dining facilities, and activities.)

All programs are taught in English by NYIT professors; the curriculum mirrors that of

NYIT's programs in the United States.

Goal and Mission

A global, private institution of higher education, NYIT has more than 15,000 students on

campuses in North America, China, the Middle East, and online. Since 1955, NYIT has

pursued its mission to:

Provide career-oriented professional education

Give all qualified students access to opportunity

Support applications-oriented research that benefits the larger world

Vision for 2030

The NYIT of 2030 should be recognizable in terms of today's institution but at the same

time be different in exciting ways. The University will maintain main campuses in New

York City and Old Westbury (with the implied trade-offs involved in the two campus

footprint), and numerous additional campuses and sites - in the United States and abroad.

The vision is that, by 2030, NYIT will be:

Known for its career-oriented undergraduate and unique and distinctive graduate

and professional programs;

Known for its thriving graduate centers featuring interdisciplinary research,

degree programs, and "best-in-class" work in a small number of highly targeted

niches;

Known as a global and partially virtual university with NYIT in New York as its

quality hub;

country in the world, with over 1.18 billion people (estimate for April, 2010), more than a

sixth of the world's population. Already containing 17.31% of the world's population,

India is projected to be the world's most populous country by 2025. The population of the

Pune urban agglomeration is to peg around 5,518,688.

Economic

As growth opportunities abate in domestic markets, attention is shifting to new and

emerging economies. Numbers of western companies have received substantial rewards

from the newly prosperous and growing middle class in India while others are still

wondering about the opportunities that are lying ahead.

India, the fourth largest economy in the world (according to purchasing power parity),

presents lucrative and diverse opportunities for western companies with the right

products, services, and commitment.  India’s requirements for equipment and services for

major sectors such as energy, environmental services, healthcare, high-tech,

infrastructure, transportation, and defense exceeds hundreds of billions of dollars in the

mid-term as the Indian economy further globalizes and expands.  India’s GDP has

Page 12: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

potential for a sustained growth of 8-10% for the next decade.  Now is the time for many

western companies to enter the rising Indian market.

Early market entry to India has many advantages including:

Ability to lock-up access to key resources and create higher entry barriers for later

entrants

Ability to set the pattern of buyer preference in both consumer and industrial

markets

Ability to avail of government concessions and incentives

Ability to observe and learn market attributes for a longer time period

Pune is emerging as a prominent location for IT and manufacturing companies to expand.

Pune has the sixth largest metropolitan economy and the second highest per capita

income in the country.

Legal/Political

The political environment of a country includes all laws, government agencies, and

lobbying groups that influence or restrict individuals or organizations in the society.

(Here we are concentrating only on educational area)

The Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, 2010

Summary

The Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill,

2010 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on May 3, 2010. The Bill was referred to the

Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, which is scheduled to submit

its report within two months.

The Bill seeks to regulate the entry and operation of foreign educational

institutions seeking to impart higher education. Higher education includes technical

and medical education and the award of degree and diploma.

Every foreign educational institution intending to operate in India has to be

notified as a foreign educational provider by the central government on the

Page 13: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

recommendation of the Registrar (Secretary of the University Grants Commission) in

the prescribed manner. The application has to be endorsed by the High Commission

of that country in India. An existing institution has to apply within six months of the

Act coming into force.

A “foreign educational institution” is defined as any institution established outside

India, which has been offering educational services for a minimum of 20 years and

proposes to offer courses, which shall be taught through conventional teaching

method (including classroom teaching). It excludes learning in distant mode in India.

The program of study offered by the foreign educational provider has to conform

to standards laid down by the statutory authority (such as UGC, AICTE, BCI, MCI)

and the quality in terms of curriculum, methods of teaching and faculty is comparable

to that offered to students in the main campus.

Every foreign educational institution has to publish a prospectus 60 days prior to

admission which shall include information about fees, deposits and other charges,

percentage of fees refundable to students, approved number of seats, conditions of

eligibility, and details of teaching faculty.

The Bill provides for withdrawal of recognition in case a foreign educational

provider violates any provision of the regulations.

Competitive Environment

NYIT have to face large competitive environment if it is going to India. According to

indiaeducation.com, “The education system in India is one of the largest in the world and

there are quite a good number of schools, colleges, universities along as well as institutes

that offer distance learning courses and online degree programs in India”. In India each

state has many universities and colleges. Delhi is the leading center of higher education

in India and is home to a number of reputed colleges. Delhi University is the major

competitors of NYIT because many other colleges like engineering; management,

medicine and arts are affiliated with it. Colleges in Kerala are run by either the state

government or the private trusts. The Department of Collegiate Education is in charge of

the administration of government colleges in the state. Thiruvananthapuram is one of the

major academic hubs in Kerala and home to several professional education colleges,

Page 14: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

including 15 engineering colleges, three Ayurveda colleges, two colleges of homeopathy,

and quite a few law colleges. Pune is also one of the largest hubs in education. There are

many universities in Gujarat and many colleges affiliate with this universities. Maharaja

sayaji Rao University, Sardar Vallabbhai Patel University and Gujarat University is the

most leading university in Gujarat.

In addition to this, NYIT’s first competitor would be Duke University. Duke University

is first to international institutes to announce its plan to establish in India.

Market Potential

India’s cabinet approved a proposal to allow foreign universities to set up branches in

India. This approval created potential opening of huge market to international educational

institutions. Universities around the world have been trying for years to find ways to

expand into India’s untapped education market. Bill will help accelerate India’s

economic growth, which has been powered in part by its best-educated programmers,

engineers and managers. Moreover, the number of students enrolling in higher-education

courses in India has been growing at around 9% a year.

In addition to this, looking to US economy rate of students coming to US has decline.

According, to recent information released by the Council of Graduates Schools, an

American body stated that it had seen a 4% decline in total enrolments among Indian

graduates and a 16% drop among the newly enrolled Indians for the 2009/10 academic

year.  In this situation it would be great if US universities are going to their homeland and

imparting foreign experience.

Besides this, according to an article on silicon India, “just like U.S. is the top study

destination for Indian students, India too is a preferred destination for U.S. students. A

new survey has found out that India is one of the five nations preferred by the U.S.

students as a key educational destination”.

Looking to all different reference, it proves that India is highly potential market for

NYIT.

Market Strategy

traveling around the world. It will also be a huge savings for these students in terms to

living, no cross-cultural differences etc. The programs that the school will offer are as

follows:

Paying for college can be daunting. There are many decisions: what you can afford,

how to pay, what resources are available to assist you, how much debt is appropriate, and

Part of NYIT's mission is to offer access to educational opportunities to all qualified

students. We believe every qualified student deserves the chance to earn a quality college

education. With that in mind, we have worked hard to keep our tuition one of the lowest

of any private college or university in New York. And we offer generous scholarships

and financial aid opportunities that make tuition even more affordable.

NYIT reserves the right to withhold student records and transcripts until all financial

obligations to the college (including fees, fines, and security deposits) have been

Page 21: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

satisfied. The administration expressly reserves the right, whenever it deems it advisable,

to:

• Change or modify its schedule of tuition and fees

• Withdraw, cancel, reschedule, or modify any course, program of study, or degree, or

any requirement in connection with any of the foregoing.

Collection Agency Fees If your account is not paid when due, it may be forwarded to an

outside collection agency or attorney. At that time, you will be responsible for paying

NYIT all of the costs associated with the collection of your delinquent account, which

includes the payment to NYIT of the principal sums due plus additional costs. Additional

costs may include, but are not limited to, collection agency fees constituting 33% of the

principal balance due if NYIT engages a collection agency to secure payment. If NYIT

engages legal counsel to secure payment, additional costs may include legal fees

constituting 50% of the principal balance due, plus all other costs associated with

collection of the delinquent amounts. New York law shall govern all collection matters.

The courts of New York shall have exclusive jurisdiction in these matters.

Place

The NYIT campus will be located at six different locations in India. All six locations with

are located in major cities throughout India. The six locations are:

o Mumbai

o New Delhi

o Bangalore

o Pune

o Kerala

o Gujurat

So why did we pick these locations? As you read along, I will discuss each location

individually so you will know why we choose these locations.

a.) Pune

Pune has more than a hundred educational institutes and nine universities, and has

acquired a reputation as "The Oxford of the East", with students from all over the world

studying at the colleges of the University of Pune. Pune has more schools, colleges and

universities than any other city in the world. We believe that placing NYIT in Pune, is

like placing NYIT in the heart of Boston, where prestigious universities like Harvard and

MIT are located Pune is a college area, where all the top universities are located, so

NYIT placing NYIT, would be a great idea. If a student wants to get a typical campus

life, they can go to Pune to study.

b.) Mumbai

Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbor. As of 2009,

Page 25: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

Mumbai was named an Alpha world city. Mumbai is also the richest city in India, and has

the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central Asia. Mumbai is the commercial

and entertainment capital of India, generating 5% of India's GDP, and accounting for

25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust & JNPT),

and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy. Mumbai is home to important

financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, the

National Stock Exchange of India and the corporate headquarters of numerous Indian

companies and multinational corporations. It houses India's premier nuclear institutes like

BARC, NPCL, IREL, TIFR, AERB, AECI, and the Department of Atomic Energy. The

city also houses India's Hindi & Marathi film and television industry, known as

Bollywood. Mumbai's business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher

standard of living, attract migrants from all over India and, in turn, make the city a

potpourri of many communities and cultures. All this sounds like Manhattan. Mumbai

location can replace NYIT’s Manhattan location but in India. Students who want to get

the fast city experience can take classes at the Mumbai campuses.

c.) Bangalore

Bangalore is India's third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban

agglomeration. As of 2009, Bangalore was inducted in the list of Global cities and ranked

as a "Beta World City" alongside Geneva, Copenhagen, Boston, Cairo, Riyadh, Berlin, to

name a few, in the studies performed by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group

and Network in 2008. Today as a large city and growing metropolis, Bangalore is home

to many of the most well recognized colleges and research institutions in India.

Numerous public sector heavy industries, software companies, aerospace,

telecommunications, and defense organizations are located in the city. Bangalore is

known as the Silicon Valley of India because of its position as the nation's leading IT

exporter. NYIT is a technology school and by placing the NYIT campus in a city that is

known as the Silicon Valley of India, would be great. Students majoring in IT have an

opportunity to get internships or jobs related to IT and at the same time complete there

schooling. For example, if you are completing your masters in information technology,

you have that luxury to work at the Silicon Valley of India and take classes in the evening

at NYIT. Like many graduate students here in the United States, students work during the

Page 26: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

day and take classes at night. This would be a great location.

d.) New Delhi

Delhi is the capital of India and it is one of the best cities to live in; both, in terms

of facilities as well as educational and career opportunities. The presence of reputed,

esteemed educational institutions, catering to numerous study disciplines at distinct level,

be it humanities, sciences, engineering, technology, medicine or management makes

Delhi a Hot Education Destination. The educational opportunity enhances the prestige of

Delhi, which is already famous as a historical city, the national capital of India and a

world-class city as well.

Many of the finest Institutions of India are present in Delhi. There are 15 Universities and

nearly 85 colleges; 55 management institutes; 7 medical colleges; 10 Engineering

colleges; large number of computer institutes; 314 higher secondary schools; hundreds of

preparatory schools and good number of other institutes spread across length and breadth

of the city. Small wonder therefore, that it has become a seminal point of attraction for

students and aspirants from four corners of India. That apart students even from countries

like the United States, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, West Indies,

South Africa, Malaysia etc come to pursue their studies in Delhi. By placing NYIT here,

It would be a great success because New Delhi is known for some of the best universities

that are there and by having a good college like NYIT, will definitely be a good move.

Students from all over the world come to New Delhi to study as well so it would be a

good idea to have one of NYIT’s location in New Delhi.

e.) Kerala

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala is underscored by the state's ranking

as among the most literate in the country. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day

Kerala made significant contributions to the progress on education in Kerala. There were

many sabha mathams that imparted Vedic knowledge. Kerala is one of the state's major

academic hubs, that hosts the University of Kerala and several professional education

colleges, including fifteen engineering colleges, three medical colleges, three Ayurveda

colleges, two colleges of homeopathy, six other medical colleges, and several law

Page 27: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

colleges. As we can see that this is a another major city in India that has a good education

vibe.

f.) Gujurat

Gujarat is situated in the western part of India shares its northwestern boundary with

Pakistan. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Mahasrashtra are the neighboring states of

Gujarat. Gandhinagar is the capital city of the state and Ahmedabad the main commercial

hub of the region. Gujarat houses a wide variety of industries and is considered one

among the best-industrialized states of the nation. Gujarat is also home to some of the

prestigious educational institutes of the nation. There are several universities functioning

in Gujarat, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various

disciplines. The four agricultural universities in Gujarat are especially devoted to the

study of agriculture and other subjects related to it. Apart from these, IIM Ahmedabad,

National Institute of Technology Surat and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad are

some of the other prestigious centers of higher learning in Gujarat. The state also has

some of the best engineering institutes in India like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of

Technology, NIT, Surat, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication

Technology and more. Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute is another

reputed institute operating in Gujarat. It does various research works on inland lake salt,

marine salt and sub-soil brine. This is the sixth major city in India, which also has a good

reputation for college education and a good vibe to place a NYIT campus.

Living and studying away from home is the best way to meet fellow students, make new

friends, and enjoy the spectrum of NYIT offerings. NYIT gives students a variety of

residence options on the six different campuses, and every NYIT campus has information

on attractive, reasonable off-campus housing. Even if you live within commuting

distance, consider joining other students in a life-changing experience.

Overall, you can see that all the six cities have a good education vibe and background.

But what makes them different from each other is that they are located in different parts

of India so anyone can go to NYIT. Even if you are from north India, you can go to

NYIT. You don’t have to worry about going to south India, which would be quite far and

costly. We have placed the NYIT campuses in all major cities around India, so anyone

Page 28: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

can take the advantage to study at a prestigious college.

Promotion

Some of the ways we will promote NYIT are as follows:

1.

OFFER FREE FOOD and you are sure to draw a crowd. People love free stuff, so if you

make it known you are serving food at your event they will come out in flocks. Of

course, they might leave as soon as they eat, so you should bring out the food in portions

so people will be less likely to eat and run.

2

USE FLYERS and other visual media to promote your event at college. It helps to hire

someone who knows a little about graphic design, because a bland flyer might discourage

people from attending. If the flyer is attractive, and informative, then more people will

notice it more and be more likely to show up. Flyers are a great to get people’s attention.

They are cheap, easy to create, and easy to disperse.

3

PROMOTE USING SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES like Facebook. You can

create an event page on Facebook, and invite everyone to attend like that. You can also

send updates to people who get the Facebook invite, which can help in keeping your

event fresh in their minds.

4

WORD OF MOUTH is also an effective method of promoting college events, especially

if you can get people buzzed about them. Creative / controversial events will generate the

necessary hype on their own, and you can cover a lot more ground if people are indirectly

promoting your event for you.

5.

Newspapers: Compose a attractive ad to place in the newspaper such as India Times and

other local papers that people read the most in India. Many people in India get the

newspaper delivered to there home and around 9 am many people have teatime and read

their newspaper. So this would be a good way to advertise since majority of the people

get the newspaper delivered every morning and majority of them read the paper. When I

Page 29: Marketing Plan – NYIT Going to India.doc

stayed they’re, I noticed how ambitious they where when it came to reading the paper.

They love to read about the gossip in he paper.

6.

Radio: NYIT is always on the 1010 wins channel. If you don’t know what 1010 wins is,

it is a news reporting station that many tune into when driving to work in the morning or

in the evening. Many tune in to that channel if are stuck in traffic as well. Break news is

also announced on 1010 wins. Every couple minutes, they advertise NYIT. I have heard

it so many times. Another station that advertises NYIT is z100. Many young and middle

age people tune into that to listen to music. It plays the latest songs and has the funniest

talk shows on in the morning that people tune into. If we can get a radio station like 1010

wins and Z100 in India, we can also promote NYIT on those stations as well. It’s the

same concept they use here in America but we will be taking it to the Indian radio station

in India.

Other ways that we will promote NYIT is by having couple open houses in a year at

varies high schools. We will also send invitation cards to residents so they are aware of

the open house. Sometimes parents like to know about this type of information. Every

year we will definitely have open house at different high schools and we will mostly

focus on juniors and seniors. We will have a team of representatives to help the student’s

answer and question they might have and to also walk them to the right path with the

correct information. Once a year, we will have a even called come on board. We will go

to each high school and recruit students. Before this event takes place, we will have the

advisors in each school to spread the news to students so they can have the application

ready for us when we arrive. We will review the application on site and recruit the

students on board. They will be strict guidelines and requirements so we are not given

more then 20 applications. Out of 20 applications, we will accept 5 students. This event

will occur every year at reputable high schools.

These are some of the ways we will start promoting NYIT. As time goes by, we will start

looking for other alternatives.
