Auctioneer – Andrew Body

An improved entry and impressive trade for a quality entry of prime cattle which saw seven sell over £2/kilo. Strong demand around the ring from butchers and commercial buyers. Two Limousin x steers in from Messrs. D.C. & S.A. Martin of Lowertown topped at 212p/kg to Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers, Helston; the other heavier steer at 652kg and 211p/kg realising £1,376 to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Overall dearest of the day at £1,391 was a 685kg South Devon x steer from Mr. D. Jenkin of Manaccan purchased by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd. Leading the heifers this week to a fantastic top price of 209p/kg and £1,352 was a grand 647kg Limousin x from Messrs. G.W. & H.E. Hawkey of St. Wenn bought by Mr. D.J. Moyle, Butcher of Beacon.

A fair number of cull cows forward met a cracking trade for all on offer. Mainly well-fleshed cows which sold extremely well with half a dozen South Devon x cows standing top of the averages. Leading at 150p/kg, one of the highest prices of recent months, was best cow from Laity Farms of Gwinear making £1,037; with next South Devon at 140p/kg – this massive 809kg cow standing overall top value at £1,133 for Mr. P.R. Weldhen of St. Columb, both bought by David King of Exeter. Good Friesians forward including for Mr. D.J. Heller of Blackwater whose dearest at 118p/kg realised £1,047 to David King; and at £999 was a big 925kg cow from Messrs. P.S. & S.H. Hammett of Little Petherick going to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.

A decent entry of over 140 store cattle met a super trade with strong demand from around the ring. Quality cattle in demand with insufficient forward to meet buyer requirements. Top at £1,095 were four 2yo Hereford x steers from Messrs. C.J. Osborne & Son of Fraddon who sold a younger trio at £930. Advertised entries of young cattle included five Charolais 14 month old steers from Messrs. W.F. Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes realising £905. Messrs. C.R. & I.E. White of Helston’s entry of 20 steers and heifers 9-12 months old saw half a dozen Limousin x steers topping at £840, heifer trios to £785, and all averaging over £800!!

Following the trends of the national trade, prices have dipped on the week; but up on South West market reports from earlier in the week. Some excellent consignments of quality lambs forward including a super bunch from Messrs. J.A. & L.S.M. Tripconey of St. Keverne with a premium of 261p/kg for their 40.1kg lambs purchased by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Their heavier 43.9kg pen topped the market at £109.50 also to Trevarthens, closely followed by a smart pen of butcher’s quality 46.5kg lambs from Mr. K.R. Williams of Tehidy which sold at £109 to J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
